Garcia to Philly for Gavin Floyd and Gio Gonzalez
thedoctor replied to BobDylan's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(philadelphia sox fan @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 03:13 PM) Chicago got a wonderful pitcher in Gio Gonzalez. I'm from Reading, Pennsylvania, which is where he pitched all season, and he was the most entertaining pitcher the r-phils had. I'm sad to see him go but I'm glad he's goin to the White Sox. I guarentee he will be in the majors either later this season or the start of next season. thanks for the info and welcome! -
QUOTE(Spod=Ratings @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 01:15 AM) Scout.com reports the Illinois got a commitment from RB Brian Gamble ou of Ohio. Hes listed as a 2 star on scout and 3 star on rivals, anyways i tihnk this is a good pickup for zook and crew don't be fooled by his ratings either. gamble's ratings are low because he is a high academic risk and is on the borderline when it comes to him qualifying. however, he is one of the top-10 prospects in ohio and comes from a great program. gamble is really, really talented, and if he gets to campus he will be a contributor. however, it is a big question whether or not he qualifies. apparently he was not much interested in going to school his freshman year and pretty much put up zeroes across the board in terms of gpa, test scores, etc. since then he's improved greatly, but he still has a lot of work to do to get into illinois.

QUOTE(GoRowand33 @ Dec 4, 2006 -> 08:51 PM) on another note, I'm pretty interested in Tony Romo. Espn seems to be drooling over him right now, calling the cowboys NFC favorites, but I'll be shocked if he doesn't struggle later on in the year the best thing about tony romo is that he's managed to stem the tide of terrell owens' stories emanating from valley ranch/espn.

at this point, too, i think the rankings are more a way to promote certain match-ups than anything else. for example, i don't think it was much of a coincidence that osu found itself at number one a few days before their nationally televised espn game against north carolina. -

the polls are such a crapshoot at this point of the season because you have people trying to balance what they've seen against what they thought they'd see. once there's more weight to the "what they've seen" the polls will get more accurate. -

QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Dec 1, 2006 -> 08:14 PM) Former Walther Lutheran QB Bo Flowers is gonna play safety at Illinois. He was drafted by Detroit, and traded to the Cubs in the Farnsworth deal. I saw him play in the frontier league this year. apparently they're looking at him as a safety. ohio state was also pretty interested in this guy. flowers info from buckeye planet

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 1, 2006 -> 06:03 PM) Lewis is an absolute stud, alot of people are overlooking how good he really is. lewis has always been very underrated. coming out of high school i was really big on him, but he played on a team with a bunch of d1 kids and just got lost in the shuffle. i was surprised he ended up at bowling green at first, but now at ohio state he's really getting to show how good he is. -

QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Dec 1, 2006 -> 05:28 PM) Conley, Butler, Cook, Hunter, Oden is going to be one scary starting 5. I want no part of that. that's not even including lewis. the buckeyes will be a very tough out for anyone come tournament time. if you want to get them, now is the time. -

QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Dec 1, 2006 -> 05:05 AM) While Oden is a great player and will make a huge impact on OSU, I am not convinced he is going to come out the first game in January and dominate. I think Oden will struggle at first, acclimating himself to the college game and just playing in games in general. I also think OSU will struggle a bit integrating him into an already strong lineup. It's entirely possible that we don't see the real Greg Oden until February and that OSU will not hit full stride until around conference tournament time. I'm not saying they are destined for the middle of the pack in the Big Ten, but I don't think his impact will be as immediate as everyone is expecting. while i agree that oden may lag behind offensively, i expect him to be an immediate force defensively when he starts playing games for the buckeyes. the kid is just an incredibly talented defensive player. in addition to his physical skills he has really good anticipation which you don't see in a lot of kids that big. when i've seen him i've also been amazed at how quickly he can close out on shooters. he'll block some shots you don't think he has a chance to get. overall, though, i do agree with your points. it's going to take some time for ohio state to readjust once they add oden into the mix. however, what will help is that he's played extensively with cook and conley in the past. -

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Nov 24, 2006 -> 09:53 PM) Well I guess you can keep calling the Valley a mid major but that league has proven that they can play with anyone. And as far as being favored, Marist and Southern Illinois are both better teams than Minnesota so I didn't see the lines for that game but I certainly wouldn't consider those upsets. And Wisconsin lost to one of the best "mid majors" around. Missouri State is a very good basketball team. Off the top of my head, the last year and a week, the MVC has beat: LSU, Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana, Pittsburgh, Kansas, and Tennesee, not to mention a 1 point loss to Illinois last season. You can call the Valley a mid major all you want, but this conference can compete with anyone. well, i think most people would refer to the valley as a mid-major league. does that mean it isn't good or isn't a great league? nope. does that mean they can't compete? nope. i never said that. what i said is big ten teams have had bad losses in the early season to teams from mid-major leagues that they were favored over. i didn't intend it to be a moratorium on how the mvc stacks up against other leagues. and yes, i know missouri state is a good basketball team. but going into that game who would have been favored and expected to win? missouri state a good team, or wisconsin which returns a bunch of players, was regarded as the best team in the big ten outside of ohio state, and is currently ranked in the top-10 (not for long, tho). i think most people would have selected wisconsin. instead they lost, which was another bad loss for the big ten. -

but mid-majors nonetheless. i didn't specify whether they were good or bad. indiana, minnesota, and wisconsin were all favored in those games and lost. as did penn state. again, not a good early season portion of the schedule. my bad on iowa. -

not a good early season for the big ten so far. indiana, minnesota, wisconsin, iowa, penn state all going down to mid-majors. expect that list to grow. -

espn's bcs computer points "guru" was on this morning and suggested that if usc wins out they are pretty much a lock. if not, he seemed to like meatchicken's chances of getting a re-match and thought that the numbers would work in their favor. he pretty much said notre dame does not have a shot because they wouldn't get the nod over meatchicken. -

the performances of meacham and brock have been very encouraging thus far. just want to see those efforts against some good teams. -

QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Nov 19, 2006 -> 01:17 AM) Dee Brown wasn't very good last year, a step back from his first three years.. He cost them a lot, IMO. i'd agree, but i wouldn't put it all on dee. it's not a good situation to be asked to be your team's point guard and primary scoring option. dee worked his ass off last year, so i'll skip criticizing him. in terms of this team being better without dee and augie, i see what 101 is getting at. last year's offense was stagnant, and we didn't have near the motion and ball movement we had two years ago. although i haven't seen any of the early games, what i've read suggest that the ball movement is better and guy's cuts are crisper. if that's the case, that's really encouraging. i am very happy to see that some guys seem to be stepping up now. it sounds like brock, meacham, and carter are really doing a nice job, and those guys were all huge questions marks. but i think we also need to step back, take a deep breath, and recognize that we beat austin peay, jackson state, and georgia southern. hardly a murderer's row. i'll withhold making any broad declarations until these guys play like this against some major conference teams. but i am cautiously optimistic. it's nice to be playing pretty well with our three best players out. at the very least we are building some depth that will be valuable as the season progresses. -
might as well just cancel next season.

yep. i'd like to try to be positive and spin this into "guys getting experience" and all that dung, but i just don't feel like it. it's been pretty much eight months of one negative story after another for this team. -

QUOTE(He_Gawn @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 01:10 PM) Still have that Gordon jealousy eh? illinois and indiana have disliked each other loooooong before this recent recruit. this goes back to henson and knight. i thought that was pretty common knowledge.
