to the earlier question about why someone would want to play at illinois. rex is correct in identifying playing time and the chance to be a part of a turnaround as a big factor. for benn, though, i also think that the quarterback situation plays a factor. from all accounts, juice is a pretty dynamic personality in addition to being pretty talented. he's taking his lumps and making mistakes now, but if you watch him, you can see where someone would want to play with him. i have a friend who plays defensive back for ohio state, and i've asked him about juice. he said from the film he's seen so far, he will be the best quarterback they've played all year. now, that doesn't account for much considering osu hasn't played a murderer's row of quarterbacks, but i thought it was a nice compliment and telling considering juice is a true freshman.

QUOTE(whitesox61382 @ Oct 30, 2006 -> 06:41 PM) Can you post a link to the article that says this, even if it is an insider article and just the headline? I checked the Maryland site up and down and couldn't find an article about Benn cutting ND. In the article that you posted below it certainly doesn't say that ND is out of it(not sure if that is the article that you are refering too). I do think that FSU and UI are the favorites at this point, but I haven't read anything that says that he has completely cut ND out of the picture. It would be a staggering change of events though. Most thought that he was 95% ND earlier this summer. Some even considered him a silent to ND, so him completely cutting them out at this point would be big news. i'm not sure that there's any mention specifically of him "cutting" notre dame. he was just asked to list his finalists, and those were the schools he named. if you check some of the notre dame message boards (notredame.scout.com; notredame.rivals.com) there's plenty of discussion of the irish's lack of a mention. in other news, four-star defensive end d'angelo mccray has canceled his visit to georgia tech and name illinois his leader.

according to maryland's scout site, arrelious benn has narrowed his list to a final three: florida state, illinois, and maryland. he has trimmed notre dame from his list.

interesting reading this morning on rose's visit last night. sounds as if illinois at least has a shot.

derrick rose at illinois scrimmage tonight:

if they added a crazy pirate to the show, it would totally rock. arghhhh!

not this one... anyhow, i have no idea what to make of this. it doesn't really make any sense. my guess is it's just a courtesy visit.

great episode. maybe my favorite one this season. it sucks there's only two more until the big break, though. i'd initially read there would be nine episodes, then a break, not six. oh, well. also, i've read that a regular cast member dies next week.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Oct 24, 2006 -> 09:41 PM) No doubt. If he was a first timer here, 4 games would have been fair, but considering all things, he shoulda got between 10 to 15 games IMO. yeah, i was thinking 10 minimum. oh well. -

let me also pick up for zook a bit as a coach. i'm not going to claim the guy is a great gameday coach. clearly, he has his shortcomings and he makes some head-scratching decisions from time-to-time. most of that stuff is well-chronicled. but, if you are going to hold him accountable for some of the offensive and special teams stupidity, then you also must give him credit for the defensive turnaround illinois has seen. are they a great defense yet? not even close, but they are hugely improved over last year. the numbers are significant. last year illinois gave up abou 470 yards a game. this year the average is 300. last year they gave up almost 40 points a game, and this year they are surrendering 25. last year illinois gave up 54 touchdowns all season, and this year they've given up 17. now those number could go up, considering wisky and osu are next. but, they could also go down with purdue and northwestern following that.

QUOTE(chimpy2121 @ Oct 24, 2006 -> 02:00 PM) 85% sure Benn is going to UofI next year. Update: According to a source, Benn has been more of an Illini lean than ND, and it's been that way since his visit. The article I just read makes Benn think that he could see playing time right away at FSU and he likes that. He said that we don't have any depth at WR and he would fit in to give Drew someone to throw to. I still think he's going to UofI though. surprising to say the least. although, maybe i shouldn't be.

QUOTE(farmteam @ Oct 21, 2006 -> 01:09 AM) Can someone give me a summary on Benn, Wilson, Austin, and Hughes? Like what posistions they play, talent level, etc. I never follow this stuff closely anymore. link to illinois prospect list this has profiles of each of those guys.

QUOTE(Jimbo @ Oct 19, 2006 -> 07:54 PM) Illini nation, what a proud group. i wouldn't go painting an entire fanbase by the actions of a few turds. i'm sure if you spent enough time on phog you'd find a few shining examples of turdiness as well. it would mean nothing at all about the kansas fanbase in general.
