Offseason 2019-2020 MLB Catch All Thread

Looks like the meds on Gaterol is delaying the deals being completed. -
WTF are you babbling on about ? I rarely in the past give the FO credit for anything. I've rambled on and on about how poor they have been in so many areas right along with you. I don't think many here wanted Mazara as a 1st choice. I was partial to Corey Dickerson. The fact that I now support Mazara just means I see the logic in the move and it's time to get the season started and stop with all the whining and get behind the team. You have no idea why the Angels had a crack at Pederson or why the Sox didn't get him. I listed some things that could have been obstacles. Maybe they just didn't want him. Maybe they didn't even get a chance to make an offer. Maybe they we're good ,thank you but no thank you. It was almost 2 months ago the Sox traded for Mazara. Rosters are a lot more set now than they were then as we approach spring training. Yet you want to compare a December trade from TX who could have waited much longer to trade him, to the Dodgers trading Joc in a heartbeat because they acquired a superstar RF in early February. There weren't even rumors of a Joc trade. It just came quickly as a consequence of acquiring Betts. You don't know anything about it and neither do I and anyone pretending that it's some kind of travesty the Sox didn't get him doesn't know anything either.
-
Might as well include 25 years old since that's what Mazara will be. And you can make a list of 100's of players who's best years happened after 24.
-
Except that they already have a RF , they would have had to beat the Angels offer in a very short window of time, then trade Mazara for God knows what since every team would know they are stuck with 2 LH starting RF's and look foolish in the process . It's always just so simple isn't it ? I'm not even sure that trade is done yet. Ohh maybe there's still hope to get him . Cling to it fellas. Cling hard. So far it looks like Pederson and Stripling for Rengifo and 2 prospects which makes all these arguments more bizarre because no one can say for sure that the Angels got a great deal.

I have no idea if Joc will be better than Mazara in 2020. I'm fine with Mazara and his upside. I wasn't fine with the Sox taking away a current good ML player with years of control for Pederson like Bummer. I was fine with trading a MiL player like Walker who is probably 2 years away when they have 4 other MiL OF's who could also pan out in less time. Mazara is our Rf . If anyone wants to they can cry about Joc getting away for less. Cry about all the teams that passed on Trout and so many others in the drafts, Cry about Tatis and Semien. There is a lot more things concerning the Sox than whining about how Joc ,Castellanos and Ozuna got away when they are all likely to be around to sign next year. If this doesn't jibe with your rules for how I see the future so be it. You can't make up rules for me based on how you think I am thinking. Some players are more expendable than others based on many reasons. Peace.. I'm done.
-
No Balta I didn't make any rules. I said i was concerned more about the future. There are no rules that go along with that. You are the one putting limits on how I see the future. Please show me this list of rules so I can show them to everyone. I think Joc for 1 year was dumb. I think Mazara has upside just like any prospect they are hoping realizes upside. Him reaching it is good for the future. Any of them reaching it is good for the future among the 25 or so other players on the 40 or in AAA or AA who might be useful in 2021 and beyond.. Any one of the players signed for more than 1 year is good for current and 1or 2 or 3 future years. You are just arguing to catch me in some kind of flaw in my logic. You aren't even arguing for one player over the other. I really did used to like you as a poster now I have no idea where you are coming from.
-
There's no actual outrage it's the same 2 guys who always complain about Mazara. Not a lot of people wanted Mazara but now it is what it is and there's a good deal of upside . He is younger than Giolitio, and Lopez. Hes about a year older than Kopech, Sheets and Burger and less than a year older then Cease and Luis Gonzalez. Jimmy Lambert is older . It takes a lot of talent to make it to the Bigs at 21 yrs old. They hope he makes some progress despite his production being consistently average. There is upside to him just like the guys close to his age that still haven't done anything the Sox are also counting on. The only difference is in the years of control. And you are right it's not worth discussing it any more.
-
Apparently you forget that Rome wasn't built in a day ? You have to start getting better some time so there's a difference between having guys for multiple years than just one year at a price the Sox weren't willing to pay . You are trying to tell me every fix can be made in one year ? Again trollish . Being better and getting a better read on the young players on the Sox and in the minors is very important to attract free agents and asses they needs for 2021 and beyond. Even if they don't win but improve a lot they still have those guys for 2021 . And we get to see how Moncada ,Giolito, Cease Lopez, Dunning, Rodon, Vaughn, Madrigal, Robert ,Anderson, Mazara, Basabe, Adolfo, Rutherford Luis Gonzales, Burdi and others do with another year.
-
I don't think me saying we will see how things turn out is a victory lap. Mazara could suck but here's consolation in plenty of good RF's available next year now which is more helpful then getting any of them for only one year.
-
Oh please by that standard I can't trade any minor league player . You are just being trollish.
-
Those players are better fits and you know that. Mazara is good in RF for a shot at his upside since we are gambling on a lot of young players upsides. The Sox have Keuchel for multiple years. Encarncion is a bridge to Abreu or someone else playing DH but if good he is here is 2021 also. Cishek can be here also for 2021 if the Sox exercise the option. Aee you just testing my knowledge here by apparently feigning ignorance on their contracts ?
-
Steele Walker may never even be a quality MLB player and he was at least a few years away. The future lies with the young pitching staff being good and is the lineup is potentially one of the best if Robert , Moncada and Eloy all become the new Monsters of the Midway. They have other RF minor leaguers who still have just as good or a better shot as Walker.
-
Sure but what's the point ? Again you are arguing for 1 year of Joc Pederson . It's not that important when he and many other quality RF's are available for a longer term deal next year.
-
And those deals have nothing to do with the current team, Sorry if I trust my own judgment and how the Sox and the other teams valued Castellanos and Ozuna over yours. We'll see how things play out. It actually has worked out pretty well for the Sox with all those guys available next year. I'm more concerned about the team beyond 2020 than you are .
-
My assumption is based on just about the most knowledgeable guy on this board who said the Dodgers wanted Bummer. What good is helping the Sox win more games for one year in a year with so many unproven young players ? I seriously question your knowledge of how the Sox are currently constructed and their realistic chances at making the playoffs in 2020 and how signing a player for one year helps any time after 2020. Joc is available next year. Then he can help the Sox in the future if they decide to go that direction.
-
Yea you missed something . Probably should read the past couple of pages worth of comments.Jimmy saif he heard the Dodgers wanted Bummer for Joc which was before the Betts deal to the Dodgers wasn't on the horizon. Once the Dodgers got Betts, Pederson was more expendable at a lesser price because getting Betts and his salary plus half of Price's salary meant they now had a crowded OF and wanted to cut some salary too. That had to be done simultaneously with the Betts trade because waiting would just make it worse. They took the bird in hand rather than fielding pitiful offers for Joc .
-
Apparently the Sox and the rest of MLB agreed with me and not you .So my subjective opinion seems to be completely in line with the Sox thinking and the many others who never saw a great fit with those players. Anything the Sox did to acquire Castellanos , Ozuna, and Pederson would have been an overpay based on what they got and a bad fit. The Sox kicked the can down the road for RF and based on Castellanos , Ozuna, Joc ,Springer,Betts availability next year and a year to see how Mazara does isn't worth complaining about. Sox still might need another quality starting pitcher next year.
-
The Red Sox didn't bring in Bloom because they wanted to keep throwing money around like it was confetti. They brought him in to fix the mess Dombrowski had made. Not even the Red Sox want to pay the luxury tax penalties . Even they realized that some $400M contract for Betts with where they were already at with payroll wasn't going to happen. That's not F worthy . I will give the Dodgers an A because Betts for one year greatly improves their shot at a World Series. They have a deep and talented roster and farm system and could afford to go for it.
-
Did you even think for 1 second if the Sox traded for Joc when you wanted them to that it could turn out to be an overpay if the Dodgers got Betts ? Do you think Joc for the one year they would have him was going to turn the Sox into a playoff team or a team capable of winning a World Series ? You just wanted him because he wasn't Mazara. Length of time on the Sox, window of opportunity fit what they would've had to give up for him meant nothing to you. All you want to do is sit in your armchair and complain about guys who didn't fit and are more costly and who become available next year . There's nothing to complain about.
-
False. Better players based on track record yes. Better options no , based on team fit, window of contention, salary and now because of the contracts they signed they are available next year which is when a good RF might be more useful .
-
The hindsight about Pederson is ridiculous. How many of you armchair GM's wrote " Hey if Betts get traded to LA, Pederson should be available again for less than the Dodgers wanted for him earlier. " Maybe the Sox were actually thinking ahead to how the Betts situation played out and didn't want to trade for Joc because well 1st off it's for one year and that's no good and 2. If Bummer was the price it would've been a stupid trade. 3. If the Dodgers did trade for Betts then the Sox overpaid for Joc. Once the Dodgers knew they were getting Betts they had to act very quickly to trade Pederson for cap reasons and perhaps the Angels anticipated the Dodgers getting Betts and inquired about Pederson and offered the best deal or the one that could at least be completed quickest. Those moves had to be made simultaneously,

You forgot Ozuna plus Castellanos can opt out.
-
And you think the contract Castellanos signed would've been beneficial to the White Sox ? He has opt outs after 2020 and 2021 and if he doesn't opt out that means he didn't perform up to his own expectations and they get stuck with him for 4 years and $64M. The Sox have Mazara for a year and can be non tendered if he doesn't perform . Then they can go after someone else.or trade him if he shows he can improve. Ozuna signed for 1 year $18 . How does that benefit the Sox any more than Mazara does? Castellanos and Ozuna signed "prove it" contracts which is what Mazara is getting paid for, to prove he is better than everyone thinks , only for a lot less money. Is 2020 so important that Castellanos or Ozuna would be the key piece in some much better team this year? The Sox are still about the future not 2020. Cry all you want about Joc , Ozuna and Castellanos. Everything depends on how the young core and pitching perform and the Sox were not in a position to add the perceived quality of 1 year players like Joc, Ozuna and Castellanos. They will all (maybe not Castellanos if he gets hurt or under performs) be available next year when all the youngsters have another year to get better and the Sox are more able to evaluate their needs. Better player does not equal a better fit. Just wait a year and see how Mazara does along with the rest of the Sox and you can start your crusade for the wonderful talents of Castellanos, Ozuna and Joc and even Springer or Betts.Saving money for 2021 seems to be more important to the Sox right now .
-
Get it over it already. JFC if RH had waited this long to make a RF move you would've been leading the charge to string him up. We have Mazara deal with it .
