2021 Plan for Kopech and Crochet
And all those things are reasons why I have been advocating trading him. Options 1 and 3 involved him pitching and building up innings therefore risking that arm falling apart. It's definitely going to get very fatigued and maybe by mid season starting games in the minors. Basically you prefer him pitching a whole season just because ideally that's what's best but that's going to require quite a few 1 inning appearances . Lets say he can get 15 starts in the minors and averages 3 innings per start so maybe's he's at 45-50 innings by pitching May through August , then in Sept. give him some relief appearances in the minor and MLB . Maybe 6 appearances max going 1 or 2 innings. Let's say he average 1.1 innings, then he's perhaps up to 50-60 IP. Then the playoffs where hopefully he can help the team by pitching another 10+ innings in relief. Win a World Series. Build up his innings as a starter, and he doesn't get injured . Is everybody happy ?

2021 Plan for Kopech and Crochet
When I look around MLB I don't see too many guys who have thrown 100MPH for too many years who haven't have surgery. Maybe you can name a few relievers maybe even a starter or 2 but there might be nothing the Sox can do to prevent it.

2021 Plan for Kopech and Crochet
I think you are right on with 2 and 3 . I'd adjust 1 to say that him pitching at all, with how hard he throws ,there's going to be a good chance of injury anyway. You can stretch him out as a starter in the minors, but he will still more than likely not be going longer than 3 innings every start until he reaches a point they feel he can do more. At some point you will have to slow him down because fatigue will definitely come into play which is why I think anyone mentioning 100 inning this year is going to be very disappointed. The Sox just cannot ignore that he could help them win a World Series. You might think that is short sighted but that is why we all talk about White Sox baseball. We want to be able to win a Championship and have that electric arm help in any way he can. If the Sox can still use him in October I'd love to see it. If not then I'd be ecstatic to have him get through a whole minor league season as a starter with no MLB pitching uninjured with 75+ innings.

2021 Plan for Kopech and Crochet
Plus Meyers was a very successful college pitcher even if he pitched a lot in relief. And Meyer pitched until Covid shut him down . Crochet was not successful as a college pitcher and Covid did not shut him down , shoulder soreness did. Crochet is high risk/high reward with an electric arm. But unless he is a freak of nature he won't be able to sustain his stuff before he succumbs to injury. It happens to just about everybody who throw's 100 and twice in the last year he was shut down due to shoulder soreness and forearm tightness. Take your pick TJ or shoulder surgery. One of them is coming.

2021 Plan for Kopech and Crochet
Right. I can agree with this. The internal discussions about Crochet have probably been endless among guys who know everything about the kid.It doesn't mean they are choosing the right path, just that all things considered it's likely the most logical one.Do the best they can do protect his arm , get some innings and help the team. Maybe Crochet agrees with that path.

Fine don't defend your position. You're purposefully being naive.

2021 Plan for Kopech and Crochet
You're are making excuses for why he wasn't pitching calling shoulder soreness not an injury. Fine he wasn't injured . Let's say I see it your way. What difference does it make ? He still wasn't pitching . If you are not pitching how can you have any worth ? How can you become a better pitcher ? How can anyone know if you can start without being injured if you aren't on the mound doing it ? Does that make it any more clear to you ?

2021 Plan for Kopech and Crochet
You usually are sore before you get injured in your shoulder . He still wasn't pitching and pitching is what pitchers do. If you can't pitch you can't develop, you can't be scouted you can't be relied upon, you can't help your team.

2021 Plan for Kopech and Crochet
I don't think it depends on what they are going to do with him. It depends on how other teams view him. I am in the minority because I view him as an injury waiting to happen, a guy far away from being a starter, a guy who may never be a starter , and if he is kept a guy who is more than likely a BP piece. Most of Soxtalk views him as someone like Verlander, Sale, Steve Carlton . If other MLB organizations view him like that, then in my eyes the best thing the Sox can do is use him to get a valuable piece for the team going forward since Crochet will only contribute this year as a reliever and if injured may never become a starter.

Hey I'm finally not alone in thinking to trade him.

Trade Whispers - Starting Pitchers
If they end up signing Bauer I'll believe that.

Trade Whispers - Starting Pitchers
But it's his walk year. Angels arent winning anything. Why not get an asset or 2 for the future ? Maybe they hang onto him until the trade deadline when they are 10 games under .500 .

RIP Tommy and best wishes to his family. He was such a colorful guy and bled Dodger Blue. He also was capable of some unforgettable moments.

Old: Mega Hendriks Speculation Thread
Cordero tops the list of guys who is going to get squeezed out of the pen so it's likely the Sox have him on the "include him in any trade if anyone wants him" list along with guys like Sheets ,Rutherford, Luis Gonzalez, Micker Adolpho, Collins, Mercedes, Zavala etc.

Old: Mega Hendriks Speculation Thread
They could speed things up if they were willing to use Crochet as a big trade chip in any deal. I know I am not very popular to keep suggesting this but he is going to take a lot of time to get ready to be a SP if he can ever even get there. I know you have commented in the past that you think I am over reacting to his injury in the playoff game. But it is not just that. He did miss all but 3 innings in his final year of college because of shoulder issues too. It just seems like he can't sustain throwing that hard for very long. There is no doubt he should be viewed as a high risk project not some potentially elite starting pitcher but if other teams view him that way he becomes more valuable than his likely outcome as a reliever or a major injury waiting to happen. If some rebuild team wants to view him as a starting pitcher and has the time to give him to try to accomplish that, then the Sox have a pretty good trade chip that is going to be almost useless to them except as a reliever this year. If he gets a major arm injury this year then it could be years before he can try to be a SP again. If you add Hendriks he becomes even more expendable. Then you can keep your starting 2nd baseman, maybe keep Heuer, not spend more money replacing Madrigal. I'm just not very keen on deleting good pieces from the 25 and spending more money to get incrementally better now.

Dodgers sign Bauer (3/102, opt-outs, 40-45-17)
Yea I'm sure Jerry is going to say screw it and go for it.

Mets Reportedly Acquire Lindor/Carrasco (Passan Reporting)
Funny how this came out after I posted that I have seen no indications that the Mets would be going hog wild on FA's.

Mets Reportedly Acquire Lindor/Carrasco (Passan Reporting)
Basically we have heard nothing from the traditional big spenders like the Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox all of whom may be dealing with Competitive Balance Tax issues. Not sure if the Red Sox fit that issue but we have also heard Houston is close to the CB tax issue also. Dodgers supposedly interested in LeMahieu now or Bryant if Turner is out of the equation given his wants. Yankees still considered a favorite to keep Lemahieu but we just aren't getting a very clear picture right now on a helluva lot of talent and what exactly the majority of owners are up to. It's all very much wait and see right now with only the Padres and Mets doing anything noteworthy so far.

Mets Reportedly Acquire Lindor/Carrasco (Passan Reporting)
I have seen no indication that the Mets will go hog wild after free agents like everyone assumed they would. This is still a long waiting game to be played out. The only 2 teams rumored to be in on a lot of high priced talent are the Mets and Toronto and they can't get everyone and the Mets are filling needs already without splurging.

Madrigal could be ready for opening day
I think him becoming an Altuve type is something we can rule out with at the very least 75% accuracy and that might be generous. He is too focused on making contact. That is what has been his M.O. I think it's possible for him to improve his hard hit ball rate but because of the focus on not striking out he will always get a lot of Piranha type hits. He still needs to show he can be above average in the field and running the bases. If he does that and still maintains the bleeders and doinks while adding more hard hit balls that become doubles and triples we're going to get a pretty good player capable of 3+ WAR every year for a while. He needs to reign himself in on the bases and show he is the heady type of player everyone thought he was. That's one major adjustment he should be capable of making rather quickly. I'm hoping TLR makes him understand his role is to get on base, field well and run smart and that will be enough. He doesn't have to be more than he is.

That's pretty pathetic.

Seem's to me that Cleveland is taking the Tampa Bay Rays approach. There is definitely room to take that approach and make it work. Someone has to be able to do it as good as TB.
