QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 12:27 PM) Haven't heard much on Moviel, I remember the Sox signed and drafted his brother Paul hoping to grab Greg. Moviel is still at Vandy. I think he was hurt earlier in the year, couldn't find his name at their web site, but he cam back towards the end of the season although he only had 1 start and 8 2/3 IP the entire year...

QUOTE(JimH @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 12:27 PM) I never liked Donald Veal. Me needer... *cough*...
-
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 12:20 PM) Oh man that would be beautiful. I remember loving Veal when we originally took him. Too bad he was a lock to go to U of A. Its really sad what happened to his mom. Too bad Hodges isn't there again... ;-) Yep, Veal's mom died of cancer in the last year. He didn't sign 2 years ago because his mom was really pushing college, Veal has wanted to become a doctor and had a one million dollar bonus demand in order to give that up. The Sox made 3 great Plan B picks in Veal, Wes Hodges (going to be a 1st rounder next year IMO) and Greg Moviel. They didn't sign any of them, but here Veal is going to go in the first 3 rounds in all likelihood. Veal left Arizona and enrolled at Pima CC in Arizona this year so he could enter the draft and start his pro career. All the best to him wherever he ends up. SUMMAb**** the Cubs just drafted him...

Anyone think the Sox redraft Donald Veal if he's there in the 3rd round?

QUOTE(daa84 @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 11:52 AM) i saw him pitch and said something like good luck youll need it when he was warmin in the pen classy...

QUOTE(quickman @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 11:48 AM) Hey where do you draft gurus have Mike Bowden (Local from Waubonsie Valley) going? Supplemental round or early second.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 10:57 AM) Yeah, Jim, I'll do my best. Before it starts -- lots of people like Cliff Robinson, the UofI catcher, going to the Sox in round four or five? Can anyone talk about him a little bit? Good defensively? Bad? Power guy? Plate discipline? CHRIS Robinson. Great arm, good defensively, a little inconsistent at the plate, but a good leader and game-caller. Has decent power. Projects to hit a bit like Taylor Teagarden but a tad below in terms of defense. Not as highly hyped and ballyhoo'ed as Teagarden. First pick is delayed because the Yanks aren't on the conference call yet.

QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 10:39 AM) Alright guys, quick question: As many of you know, I'm head-over-heels for the NFL draft, as I spend countless hours with my notebook, online, etc. That said, I'm very familiar with consensus picks and such. I know Justin Upton is the consensus #1 as he has been compared to such can't-miss guys like ARod, Griffey, etc, but are there a consensus 2-5 or 2-10 this year? I'm really green when it comes to the MLB draft; what names am I going to look out for? The Mariners could take any of 3 or 4 guys at #3, it's not clear yet. Signability starts playing a role in the 3-10 slots moreso, IMO, than the top 2 (generally)

ok, anyone have the video working? Do you have to have an MLBtv subscription?

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 10:31 AM) Randar, are you in the against-taking-Carrillo camp? I thought that's what I read over at WSI, but I can't be sure...? And, so long as nothing crazy happens (like Justin Upton falling to #15), who do you want the Sox to take? Well, let's be clear, I'm simply not all that enthralled with the guys who will be there mid-first. I think there's little drop-off between the mid-first-round guys and the middle of the second round. The premium is there in the top 10, but after that, it's kind of a cloudy picture of the next 50 guys or so. Not a fan of Clement. I don't think he can stick behind the plate. Carillo, Bogusevic and Broadway? I don't know, they each have their pluses and minuses. I think out of the group, today, I like Carillo the best, but Broadway and Bogusevic both appear to me to be safer picks from a durability standpoint and both project a little better IMO. My best case scenario? Tulowitzki falling out of the top ten and landing in our lap.

QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 10:28 AM) The part I love about the draft besides the Sox picking is seein who slips and how far down. I just find it interesting to gauge teams opinion on players rather than the BA and MLB.com's. The only problem with that is BA or others often rank on talent, whereas signability, personal issues, college committments, etc play heavily into where players are actually selected.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 10:19 AM) Jim, good points on Broadway. With the success McCarthy has had, I imagine that the Sox will be drafting a lot of those type of guys, ones who pound the strikezone and have low BB totals. 40 minutes... The Sox have always been a fan of projection in the first few rounds and taken those kind of guys later. McCarthy, Buehrle, Sirotka, etc. Now, granted, it hasn't always worked out well picking either early, LOL... Wells was a hard-thrower, Parque was a control pitcher. Pitching is just a roll of the dice either way.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 10:59 PM) A little more info on him is that he's the top rated Canadian player and is slotted by BA to go anywhere from the 2nd to 5th round. Of course Visa problems have been an issue in where the Canadian players end up being drafted. I remember reading therer were a few more visa's available this year due to a new temp program thats around. New legislation was passed changing the way Visas are issued this year and it alleviates the concern about not being able to get a Visa. INstead of handing them all out at one time, they now allow 2 six-month-spaced application periods, IIRC.

QUOTE(Tmar28 @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 10:13 AM) quick question, on the videos of the prospects on mlb.com the screen has 2 numbers. the top one must be speed, whats the bottom one? Tracks velocity throughout the sequence and the gun freezes the top number as the max reading during the pitch...

QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 10:03 AM) Yeah I hope nobody expects Carillo to hit 95 regularly, or you will be displeased. Not many guys in the draft process can hit 95 regularly, and if they can they are either a top 10 pick or a later round guy because of their control. Carillo has nice sink on his fastball that sat at 91-92 when I watched. Yep, not going to be hitting 95 with any kind of regularity. He's got more of a Garland-speed fastball. 89-92 is where it is when it is most effective and getting the most movement.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 12:07 AM) I really like Robinson and I think that pick would make a lot of sense. Would you guys stop pilfering my boys? LOL! Now even Sickels is on the bandwagon! As some know, I'm a big Chris Robinson fan and have been for some time.
-
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 10:14 AM) He's always had power, the problem was he strikes out too much (still does, but he's making strides) and he wasn't capable for hitting for much of an average (thats improving as well). 22 years old in High-A, 64 K's and only 7 walks... *shudder*...

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jun 5, 2005 -> 08:32 PM) If Townsend falls to #15 the Sox have gotta grab him. Sure he may end up being a reliever, but you don't pass on a guy with his kind of stuff. I'd prefer Bogusevic ahead of Carillo, but that's just me. No way do I want Clement at #15, I know Jason said there's a guy we can take in the 4th or 5th who has better defense IIRC. Looks like the Sox are going for a "need" pick here and not takin the best player available IMHO. Chris Robinson the catcher out of Ontario (via the University of Illinois)... would be a really solid 4th or 5th rounder if he falls that far.
-
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 07:00 PM) Why am I not so thrilled with Bogusevic? In 2003 and 2004, he posted WHIP's of 1.46 and 1.37, with a K/9 under seven. His ERA, while alright, wasn't spectacular by any means either -- 3.41 and 4.19. This year, he's obviously doing a lot better, but it's still not someone who jumps out at me as a guy I want at #15. Then again, I'm not a genius on the subject of draft prospects, either. I'll be honest -- straight fastball or not, I have my heart set on Wade Townsend somehow falling to #15. Yep, I have the same uneasy feeling...

QUOTE(Chisoxrd5 @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 07:35 AM) LOL...I'm glad this message board doesnt make the roster moves for our farm system...were moving guys up so fast it makes my head spin. But it definitely looked like a flat out dominant start for Gio!! I really hope he stays down there till the end of July when Im goin to three Kanny games...I wanted to get to see him!! Gio had several very successful starts in Kannapolis last year. Combined with instructional league and his start to this season, what possible reason do you have not to move him up? Personally, I think they wait until the draft is over and they sign a few college-type players who will be starting at Kanny before they move Gio and probably Liotta up to W-S and possibly a couple of the guys from W-S to BHam. The draft (about 1-2 weeks after, usually) is when a lot of guys start getting readjusted.

QUOTE(farmteam @ May 29, 2005 -> 11:16 AM) Townsend lost his eligibility because he rescinded it himself. He gave up his eligibility because he wanted to finish school whether or not he signed and gave up his eligibility in order to try to retain his ability to sign with an MLB club despite attending classes. IMO, it was one of the most asinine rulings by MLB in a long, long time. Kid is devoted to finishing his degree (IIRC he was a semester away, not a full year) and gave up his college eligibility to try to keep negotiations with the O's going. His demands were not astronomical, the O's didn't drop the ball as much as they got caught in a wierd situation. Sure, they could have ponied up earlier, but a college pitcher with a long, full season doesn't need to sign quickly and throw another 100 innings in the minors...

QUOTE(ChiSox_Sonix @ May 31, 2005 -> 11:36 AM) Who is this Daigle guy in W-S? He has been absolutley tearing it up there this year. The name sounds vaguely familiar but I dont realy know anything about him Career Minor Leaguer

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ May 28, 2005 -> 05:02 PM) Phil Rogers said he had easy 95 MPH heat. Boy was he wrong. Nothing against Miller but he was never as good as BA hyped him up to be. Wish him the best though, he was a hard worker. Yep, the kid was never anywhere near that, no idea where Phil got that from. He was usually lucky if he could hit 90-91. Too bad for Brian, good luck to him wherever he ends up.
-
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ May 30, 2005 -> 09:40 PM) a guy that Phil Rogers (bad specific example by me) thinks very highly of, as well as many people around here. Come on now, nobody in the media had ever mentioned him and even most followers of the minors had never heard of the kid until I started pimping him in early August after he blew me away...
