  1. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 12:38 AM) I have not seen Tyler pitch but he has a better arm then Gio?? Yep. Gio has a great curve, but his fastball is average and he lives on location and pitch selection. Lumsden is flat-out filthy and has a much better fastball.
  2. QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Jul 6, 2005 -> 08:18 PM) So you are saying that if you are LH you don't have to be any good?? I don't buy the lefty/righty argument here. I might, if the lefty could actually get people out. Hell, I'd rather have Munoz in the pen than Walker. I'm going to tie my son's right hand behind his back until he's 10 years old. Yes, they have Walker up there because they can send him up and down at will, and he is LH'd, replacing Marte while he is on the DL. Otherwise, Cotts is the only lefty in the pen.
  3. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 6, 2005 -> 07:28 AM) If the arguement is potential over ability, why is Kevin Walker up here over Arnie Munoz? options?
  4. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jul 6, 2005 -> 12:49 AM) I still believe Walker got the nod because he's a lefty. I don't agree with it, but it's not my call to make. Yep, the Baj vs. Walker argument is silly, it's like saying the team should call up a 3rd baseman when they're in need of an OF'er.
  5. QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Jul 5, 2005 -> 04:25 PM) I agree with randar and jim to a point, but what does a guy have to do to prove himself?? I like Jenks stuff as well, but that does not mean he will be able to handle the big leagues. He may be able to, and if he does, that's great. But I'd say there is equal chance that he will struggle once hitters have been able to see him once. If he has trouble with control, it may happen sooner. Great stuff helps, but it does not a pitcher make. Personally, I'd have tested Jenks in AAA first, but that's just me. I don't disagree, but now is the time the Sox have the opportunity to go for that homerun. If Jenks has to go back to the minors, send him to AAA and Baj to Chicago, no biggie...
  6. QUOTE(obno @ Jul 5, 2005 -> 12:54 PM) Ozzie is a mullet-head. Bajenaru maybe to quality off the field to fit the "ozzie vibe" Jenks has 2 pitches better than anything Baj throws and has a much higher potential to help both now and in the future. Are the Sox interested in winning or just "promote this guy because he's next in line and is a great guy"???? People need to take a step back and look at the big picture for 2 seconds. Jenks has the potential to be a K-Rod type impact player now. Baj has the chance to be a middle releiver now. I like Baj, but the love for him around here because he is a great guy goes beyond the realm of reason. People need to separate being a great guy from being "the right move for the major league club"...
  7. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jul 4, 2005 -> 05:08 PM) I think this is John Danks fault, if he hadnt already got a 2 million plus contract b4 Jordan maybe Jordan would of skipped college to get some money, but now his family is obviously secure financially with the 1st danks contract. I think there is some truth to the "John has already gone that route" theory, but I believe it has far more to do with their experience with the process and the connections they now have in terms of advisors than with money. He has top 10 talent but probably would have gone late first because of signability issues. He goes to college and adds someone not named Boras as agent and 3 years from now, there's a decent chance he's a top 15 pick. The Sox were not going to throw 2+ million at him, it would have made far too many ripples with the Commissioner's office, and we know how close Bud and JR are.
  8. QUOTE(danman31 @ Jul 4, 2005 -> 02:02 PM) It's called a backup plan. If your pro career busts you're going to need to something to fall back on. This is especially true in baseball because so few of the pros make it to the bigs. If you're not in the first couple rounds your signing bonus isn't going to be huge and none of the minor league salaries are worth anything. Most of these HS players have the costs of college taken care of in their contract, explicitly stating the team will pay for college after their pro careers are over should they desire to do so. That said, not all that many baseball players could get into quality colleges based on academic merits alone. That ALSO being said, few 6'5" kids have the kind of physical ability in the game of baseball that Jordan Danks has. He is very Carlos Beltran-esque, IMO, yet bigger. A faster and more athletic Jermaine Dye maybe?
  9. QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 10:59 AM) Brandon Allen is one of Randar's favorites. They drafted him and he was really really raw. He played football too and as we all know, those dual sport athletes have some catching up to do. He was really raw last year, but as a kid right out of high school, athletically, he was like a man among boys at Bristol. real BIG, fast, agile... He didn't get much coaching and started playing baseball late, IIRC, but the guys at perfectgame really loved the kid's potential and after seeing his video and seeing him in action, so did I. Good to see him putting some of the batting-practice power into the games. He's going to progress, and it may take some time, but if that light ever clicks on for him, he could be a real star.
  10. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jun 22, 2005 -> 01:29 AM) Great start for those 2, I didn't even know we had sign a pitcher called Sanchez but I knew we had the outfielder. Reading about him though, he's got 3 plus pitches and great stuff, and he had a real good outing tonight. Definitely keep an eye on these two for the rest of the year and into the future, it's good to see the increased scouting in the Dominican Republic starting to pay off a little. Ramon Sanchez is also 21, on the old side for Bristol, although coming from the DSL is abig change in and of itself.

    Danks?

QUOTE(Jake @ Jun 21, 2005 -> 02:08 PM) sorry about that...i had looked around and seen it talked about i just didn't know if we had officially given up or something I don't think you'll see anything official until he attends his first class at Texas.

    Danks?

QUOTE(Jake @ Jun 21, 2005 -> 01:44 PM) Will we sign him? I heard we might have to fork over some cash, in the non-sox way. I hope we get him, he could be quite the steal in the 19th round. This is discussed in about 12 different threads here, but what the hey... No, they are very unlikely to sign him. Likely a back-up plan, but seeing as they've signed almost everyone else fromt heir top 20, it's extremely unlikely they fork over the cash it would require (IMO at least $2.1 million his brother got or close to it)
  13. QUOTE(JimH @ Jun 21, 2005 -> 08:53 AM) Here's a link to a preview article on the Bristol White Sox, the lowest level farm team of the Sox. They open their season tonite. http://www.tricities.com/servlet/Satellite...ath=!sports For the record, the Dominican Summer League is really the lowest level, but for the primary US-based leagues, sure, Bristol is the lowest level of formal competition. Expert the majority of HS, young Latino, and inexperienced college players to end up there. Sanchez is really the name to watch. The rotation they have set-up is relatively unimpressive...
  14. QUOTE(sayitaintso @ Jun 20, 2005 -> 02:21 PM) That still is a pretty big jump. Did the same thing last year with Adam Larson...(might have been from W-S?)
  15. QUOTE(JimH @ Jun 20, 2005 -> 09:42 AM) It will be interesting to see how it plays out re: Hernandez. It's a quandry. The kid missed his senior season with an injury so it's very possible he's not close to ready for professional baseball at any level (just a guess on my part). Letting him go to JC is a plus and a minus. If he blossoms, they might have trouble signing him although the "wait and see" program may have already been discussed with him. The plus side is, they still have control until 5/31/06 and can essentially try before they buy. One thing is, the Sox seem to have a knack for signing most guys they really like. Another factor to consider is, the Sox system is not particularly strong with promising 1B types, they can use at least 1-2. Well, it was just a torn meniscus from the reports we've heard. That is not a serious injury to a non-catcher, although it obviously requires inactivity and rehab that apparently cost him most or all of his season. That being said, Rogo and Allen are the only true 1B prospects, and Allen is still extremely raw. I don't know, I'd still try to sign Hernandez and get him to Arizona and get some AB's at Bristol, in the instructional leagues this fall... That would further his development a lot more than letting him go to Broward CC and playing himself back into the draft... I don't think it would take much more than standard 7th-10th round money to sign him, but what do I know? If that's the case, it's really a low-risk high-reward scenario...
  16. QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Jun 18, 2005 -> 04:57 PM) Signing these guys could actually be a help in going after Danks. The fact that 14 of our first 15 have signed so quickly, leads me to believe that they were signed reasonably. We still have 2nd round money open at the very least, and if we signed some of these guys for less than market value so to speak, then we still could throw some money at Danks for the next few months. I think Danks was a back-up plan if they couldn't sign some combo of Brooks/Cortes/Cunningham... I doubt they throw more than 1-1.5 million at him, and I would think it would take a minimum of 2.1 to get him to sign...
  17. QUOTE(danman31 @ Jun 18, 2005 -> 05:16 PM) Yeah, well Miami is a hotbed. It's easier. They scout one guy and find others they like. The Sox scout Southern Florida and the Florida CC's as well as anyone in baseball. If they wait to sign Hernandez, they probably won't get him, IMO... He's a huge projectible kid who could vault himself right into the top 3-5 rounds without blinking in his first JuCo year. Chirino and Hernandez are great value picks where they took them. Higher round talen but due to extenuating circumstances, they weren't on other teams' radars...
  18. QUOTE(JimH @ Jun 17, 2005 -> 11:48 AM) Israel Chirino, that's the LHP I was referring to. He is due for Great Falls so apparantly has signed. Another interesting article from earlier in the week, catcher Franciso Hernandez will be assigned to Great Falls, and Jason Stumm continues to give it a shot: http://www.greatfallstribune.com/apps/pbcs...324/1006/NEWS17 Yep, Hernandez got some invaluable experience though playing in Kanny prior to Lucy returning. He was starting to come around at the plate a bit as well. Very interested to see how Brandon Allen has progressed in the offseason, the kid has a world of physical ability but was very raw last year.
  19. QUOTE(JimH @ Jun 17, 2005 -> 11:37 AM) Here is a nice article from the Great Falls Tribune, looks like several guys from the recent draft have signed, including 2B Chris Getz: http://www.greatfallstribune.com/apps/pbcs.../506170337/1006 So here is the top 10 rounds and who we've got signed and confirmed thus far via various media reports: 1) Lance Broadway (W-S) 3) Ricky Brooks 4) Chris Getz (Great Falls) 5) Ryan Rote (Great Falls) 6) Aaron Cunningham 7) Daniel Cortes 8) Clayton Richard (Great Falls 9) Joe Winn 10) Israel Chirino (Great Falls)
  20. QUOTE(JimH @ Jun 17, 2005 -> 11:22 AM) I think it was Randar who mentioned we should see a bunch of signings very shortly, seeing as both Great Falls and Bristol open their seasons in the next few days. Yep, both teams open play on the 21st. The Great Falls Tribune mentioned a couple guys, IIRC, including 41st round pick Kris Welker had signed and will be going to Bristol (he's a Missoula, Montana native, IIRC)
  21. QUOTE(JimH @ Jun 17, 2005 -> 11:19 AM) Did Brooks sign, I hadn't seen that anywhere. I am doubting we'll see an update on it before the rosters are made public for Bristol/Great Falls or people show up on Kanny/W-S rosters... Brooks and Cortes were reportedly close to signing several days ago...
  22. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jun 17, 2005 -> 10:37 AM) Excellent. Liotti is next... (wonder if they start Brooks in Kanny or Great Falls...)
  23. Lance Broadway was named to the All-American first-team by Baseball America... (also made Louisvlle Slugger and National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association 1st teams) http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/college/050616aa.html He is also a finalist for the Brooks Wallace Award given to the nation's top collegiate player by the College Baseball Foundation, the Xanthus-Dick Howser Trophy, given to the top player in college baseball, and he is also a finalist for the Roger Clemens Award given to the top collegiate pitcher Broadway is the only player in collegiate baseball to be a finalist for three major awards.
  24. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jun 17, 2005 -> 10:05 AM) The guy is a monster you'd think he has some hidden power. I'm sure his linedrives into the gap in the met will turn into some homeruns in Charlotte, wouldn't you think? I don't put a lot of stock in poor power numbers in BHam, and I don't put a lof of stock in great power numbers in Charlotte, either. I think Rogo is a ~20 HR hitter in the majors unless he changes his swing plane... That said, he can be a 40+ doubles guy and hit over .300 with a lot of walks, and I'd take that. I think that would put him in the .800-.850 OPS area...
  25. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jun 17, 2005 -> 09:59 AM) Completely agreed, I know I'm very interested to see how much his power numbers increase while in Charlotte. I also kind of wonder if he has a legit shot to replace Pauly if he's not resigned after this season, I guess his time in Charlotte will prove that one way or another. He's always projected to more power than he's shown, but he's a pretty good hitter and patient... If he ever figures out how to hit the ball with good carry in game-situation, you could see that power show up down the road. He hits the ball hard regularly...
