QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jun 9, 2005 -> 01:59 PM) Can the Sox offer him some kind of deal where, after his baseball career (however long that is) is done, they'll pay for all of his college expenses? I assume he's already on a full-ride to Texas anyways, but maybe that would appeal to him, as well as become an instant millionaire? Usually a part of the deal with college-committed kids, if not all kids who haven't finish school.

QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Jun 9, 2005 -> 12:40 PM) , he was the one I wanted and thought we should draft in the 3rd, I knew he would be signable as Hewitt is flirting with other jobs. Man that sucks. He actually had a few quotes in the local paper about prioritizing baseball with the draft and having hoops as a fall-back option. He did play like a dog most of his senior year though... The story about him hitting a HR LH'd in his only career LH'd AB was pretty amazing though... He is a legit 5-tool talent if his head is in the game...

QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Jun 9, 2005 -> 11:55 AM) You think so? I felt the same way, but BA said he was a draft eligable sophomore that could be looking for more money to sign. So I'm not sure about that. But either way we will have plenty of money available with all the likely draft-and-follows we drafted this year. If we don't sign Danks, we can sign more of the DAF guys right before next years draft. Well, guess who ponied money up? King George signed Austin Jackson out of the 8th round for 1 million. He was a top-flight talent who played like s*** his senior year after committing to play point guard for Georgia Tech... Gonna play baseball now...

QUOTE(jerseysox @ Jun 9, 2005 -> 11:49 AM) you guys are all right. uribe is better than miles, therefore, kenny williams rules. best gm ever. That's like saying you meant that KW was the worst GM ever because of a deal he made what, 4 or 5 years ago? Whatever, make all the asinine assumptions and incredible flying leaps of logic you want.

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jun 9, 2005 -> 11:42 AM) Well dont go that far, Kip is a good solid pitcher and Id take him on our pitching staff any day of the week :puke Apparently you don't see many Pirates games. He still craps himself regularly. I was done with him when he was traded and he has done nothing to "grow" as a player since he left. He's one of those maddeningly talented pitchers who just doesn't have it upstairs. You take him out of Pittsburg and put him in Chicago, NY, Texas, Oakland, Seattle, and he's back to a 12-12 pitcher with a 4.75 ERA... You'd take that on the Sox? Let me be the first to say, "No Thanks"...

QUOTE(danman31 @ Jun 9, 2005 -> 12:29 AM) I decided to register and see what the article said. It was free and I used fake info. We knew this going in. This is not news. Time to see what an offer does to him. He originally said he wouldn't sign unless he got 2.1 million to match what his brother got, then later backed off and just said he was going to college no matter what. I'd throw $2.1 million at him and see what he says. Broadway will be an easy sign, as will Brooks and Clayton. They should have a lot of budgetary cash on the table depending on what happens with Cortes/Cunningham... "He can always do that pro stuff later"... Not necessarily, Jordan, but you sure as hell can always do that school stuff later... Food for thought, young man...

QUOTE(jerseysox @ Jun 9, 2005 -> 10:42 AM) Uribe? Yeah, no way Aaron Miles could match his monster stats. And if you're really going to base Kenny's greatness on four middle relief guys, i'd like to buy some of that dope you are smoking. especially when you say we didn't need kip wells and josh fogg (two starters) yet we traded them for a STARTER. so exactly how didn't we need them? Aaron Miles is such a fantastic player... A firehydrant has better range, and last I checked, we didn't need a 2B, we need a SS to be a successor to Jose... Nobody plays harder than Uribe and he's VERy solid with the glove. We didn't need Kip and Fogg because they SUCKED MY NUTS. They are mediocre pitchers in the NL for a team that can't field a .500 club for the life of them. They would not have contributed. Ritchie didn't turn out like we hoped, but Fogg and Wells wouldn't have done a damned thing in Chicago, so what's the difference?

QUOTE(poorme @ Jun 9, 2005 -> 07:42 AM) from today's sun-times STAY AWAY: Williams was asked his thoughts on this year's draft, which ended Wednesday, and he came to a realization. ''The one thing that I have had to come to terms with is, I [stink] at amateur scouting,'' Williams said. ''I am so much better at evaluating minor-league players and major-league players that it's probably best for me to just get out of the way.'' Since he became GM, he has had a total hand-off policy on the draft, allowing his scouting director and minions to completely dictate the draft (with of course some working guidelines from the top). He hasn't been present for the draft the last 3 years at least, been elsewhere during the event.

QUOTE(jerseysox @ Jun 9, 2005 -> 09:37 AM) his moves of late have been tremendous (podsednik, contreras, garcia, etc.) but before this past year, he was just flat out terrible (koch, ritchie, alomar, etc.) He's been doing very well much longer than that, jersey... Uribe? Marte? Politte? Gordon? Cotts? On top of that, most of the minor league talent he has traded hasn't done anything, meaning he is "trading the right guys"... Besides, even in that Ritchie deal, he only gave up players that the Sox didn't want/need. Kip Wells still s***s himself in pressure situations and Fogg and Lowe? What have they done that would have warranted a roster spot on the Sox the last few years?

QUOTE(danman31 @ Jun 9, 2005 -> 12:05 AM) I want to at least see who they sign before I even grade how they drafted for value, little how the guys turn out. I voted after day 1, but I agree fully. It totally depends on who they sign, who the DFE, etc. If they sign their first 5 guys and Danks, it's a freaking great draft even if Brooks is a reach and they don't sign anyone else, LOL... We'll see, Cortez and Cunningham will make a big difference in how this class grades out IMO, in addition to some of the later talent they drafted with DFE-potential.

QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Jun 8, 2005 -> 11:29 AM) I did find some interesting info on the 1B we drafted Yuselmis(sp?) Hernandez on a wood bat association page. You holding out on us? lol

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jun 8, 2005 -> 10:57 AM) Harris was a bad example, but I was sort of leaning towards (with Garland and Cotts) that we basically developed these guys ourselves... I'm with ya. Although last night Cotts looked like a freaking STUD! He's so good when he works fast and challenges hitters.

QUOTE(Cerbaho-WG @ Jun 8, 2005 -> 10:41 AM) I think Danks would have been a mid to late first round pick if he didn't say he wanted to go to Texas. I'd throw 1.5 million at him and see what he does. I think the Sox can go a bit cheap this year with all the JC and CC players in the first 18 picks (6 of them). I think it's going to take 2nd-3rd round money to sign Cunningham or Cortez, but that's just a guess.

QUOTE(danman31 @ Jun 8, 2005 -> 10:33 AM) A local kid just got picked by the Indians in round 19. Timothy Dennehy, LHP, Oak Park-River Forest HS. Dennehy is a top 5 round pick with signability issues this late... Can't recall his college commitment off the top of my head.

QUOTE(Cerbaho-WG @ Jun 8, 2005 -> 10:37 AM) Expect first to second round money, I'd say 7 figures, thrown at Danks. You have any info or just speculating on what it will take to get him? I think late-first to supplemental money...
-
QUOTE(JimH @ Jun 8, 2005 -> 10:32 AM) Sox just took Jordan Danks ... yup, THAT Jordan Danks. Will be interesting to see if they wave big $$$ at him. WOOOO HOOO!!!!!! Sign him you bastards! (lol)

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 09:18 PM) I figure you get more value for pitchers so why not draft pitcher heavy and then deal the excess for help at positions, plus the Sox obviously have a stockpile at the OF position right now and they have some young toolsy infielders already. I'm not saying the infielders are great, but I do love the pickup of Getz (flat can handle the bat...seems like he has the potential to be a really good 2 hole hitter). And catchers are a crapshoot, they'll probably draft another, but they have two very raw once as it is in Francisco and Lucy. Lucy should be back pretty quick, in fact I thought Randar said he was activated and while Lucy didn't impress offensively he's got better tools than any of today's picks (that were catchers). Clement is god awful when it comes to throwing and he isn't much better at blocking. He did make a lot of strides this year, but I have my doubts. I'm speaking pure physical ability though and he's definately more raw. The best "catcher" in the draft was Teagarden (or however the hell you spell it). The reason I say catcher is because I think defense when I think catcher and offense is a plus. Teagarden has some offensive tools but he's a stud defensively. Hell I like the catcher out of Illinois (robinson) more than I like Clement. Once again if were talking catcher. Yep, Teagarden and Robinson were my 2 favorited catchers. I think Clement is going to end up at 1st base, JMO. Teagarden is better defensively (in terms of leadership and game-calling type skills) and has a slightly more-projectible bat than Robinson. Either would have been GREAT 3rd round picks, but yeah, Teagarden is going to be a tough sign as a Junior and having Boras as his agent. Lucy is an exceptional athlete behind the plate and has top-notch receiving skills. Will he hit? Again, you can't draw conclusions yea or nea from the Pioneer League. Nanita hit .400 for example. We'll just have to keep an eye on him this year and see how he progresses. Same with Fransisco Hernandez (been turning it around at the plate the last couple weeks)

QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jun 8, 2005 -> 09:52 AM) Correct me if I'm wrong, but all three of those guys were not drafted by the Sox. However, I suppose they came up through our system. Well, Garland was acquired when he was in Low-A, Cotts had limited if-any AA experience. Harris was near-MLB-ready. Crede was fully home-grown, Buehrle also. Rowand also. Again, the likes of McCarthy, Rogowski, Chris Young, Sweeney, Anderson, Pedro Lopez, Andy Gonzalez, Wes Whisler, Bobby Jenks, Lumsden, Liotta, Gio, Robert Valido, etc etc form the base for a VERY solid organization that if nothing else, has a lot of in-demand talent that could bring very good plays in via trade (such as the Garcia deal)...
-
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 8, 2005 -> 10:12 AM) And it is going to take at least that long to convince the Sox as well. How many guys are in front of him now? 10? He has a long way to go. Talent-wise? Just a couple. Like I said, it's gonna take some long-term consistency to convince anyone that he's "back"...

QUOTE(BHAMBARONS @ Jun 8, 2005 -> 08:33 AM) I was wondering if anyboby was, Kris had good control and not just the walks but hitting his spots. Those Breaking balls he threw were old Kris Honel then come back and hit 90 on a Fastball which is the best I seen him this season. I think nobody is willing to get excited or think it can happen consistently until it does. I think it would take 12-16 months of consistency for me to be convinced, if that gives you any idea of my mentality on Honel right now, LOL...

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 04:57 PM) It must be. I was puzzled. At first glance I assumed he played in a wood bat summer leaugue but I guess thats no the case. I know there are a few wood-bat JuCo conferences around the country, but I couldn't name them off the top of my head, that's for sure...

QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 04:55 PM) I'm personally loving the Aaron Cunningham pick. Here is what BA says about the barely 19 year old. "Huge numbers of scouts came for Simons and Zink, and they stayed for OF Aaron Cunningham (5). The unheralded freshman tore up the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges, hitting .489-10-56, earning MVP honors and nearly winning the league’s triple crown. Exceptionally strong at 6 feet and 190 pounds, Cunningham hit a number of long wood-bat home runs with one of the purest swings in the Northwest. His other tools, mainly his speed and arm strength, are slightly above-average." Yep, I definitely like that one on the surface. I'm not very familiar with the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges, is it a wood-bat association?

QUOTE(quickman @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 04:54 PM) Well, we took a second round catcher last year, and I knwo its early but if people are clamoring for a catcher I assume this guy won't make it. Would we call this a wasted pick? No. It's too early to judge.

QUOTE(danman31 @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 04:50 PM) Well there's Donald Lucy who struggled in Great Falls and will repeat there this season. Adam Ricks is a IF/C that walks a lot, but low average at Kanny (see my profile). Josh Hansen, also at Kanny, is playing 1B, OF, C, and DH. He is hitting about .270 with good power numbers. No Lucy will not repeat Great Falls. He has been on the DL and is now activated and on the roster at Kannapolis.

QUOTE(quickman @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 04:52 PM) Yep its lucy, didn't we burn a 3rd or 4th pick on him? 2nd rounder, one of our 6 picks before the start of the third round. He's been hurt, so he just started playing again. Very good defensively, very good athlete. We'll see if he can hit.
