QUOTE(danman31 @ Apr 18, 2005 -> 03:21 PM) Fields was hitting .368 2 days ago and has gone 0-8 in the last 2 games. That's no big deal. Also, I don't see where the Sox get off putting Owens in AA. Last season in low A he hit .292 with a .714 OPS. Along with his .365 obp those are good numbers, but worthy of skipping a level? Owens didn't looked overmatched in spring-training and power is not part of his game, OPS and SLG% are meaningless with respect to a player like Owens. You want to see him with doubles and triples, but his swing/approach is not geared for power. His game is speed and OBP. Many guys struggle the first month or so in a new league adjusting. This is nothing new and there's nothing that says he or Young wouldn't have had similar problems at Winston-Salem.

QUOTE(Jabroni @ Apr 14, 2005 -> 01:41 PM) http://www.rotoworld.com/content/story.asp...B&storyid=11946 I didn't quite enjoy the Hawk-bashing. I'm still not sure why every time Rotoworld sneezes on their keyboard we need to have a thread about it. Most people on here have a little toe that knows more about the minor leagues than they do.

Gio dealing in first game of Kanny DH - 4/13

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Apr 14, 2005 -> 11:17 AM) Mine as well, guy got a bad wrap becuase of his family. Good steal by the org I like Gio, but he is a cocky kid. Definitely a different air about him and his attitude than guys like Valido, Ryan Rodriguez, Chris Young, etc etc... I'd say it was confidence, but it is more than that, IMO. -

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Apr 13, 2005 -> 04:34 PM) Awesome! Gio got some innings (albeit, just a few) with the Warthogs last year, correct? If he pitches fairly well in Kanny, how long do you guys think before he gets the promotion? Is there a possibility he takes the B-Mac route -- Kanny to Salem, then perhaps some innings at Birmy if all goes well? Don't think he had any innings in W-S. They're being cautious with him. Pitched very well in Kanny last year, easily could have started him in W-S. I would not be surprised to see him promoted in a month or so if he continues this, though. Cocky kid, hope for good health with him, because it's might be the only thing that could hold him back. -
Gio's got 9 K's and only given up one hit after 5 IP... http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/app/mil...gboafx_kanafx_1 W-S Wins their afternoon game today 6-2 http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/app/mil...myrafx_wswafx_1

QUOTE(MnSoxFan @ Apr 12, 2005 -> 03:32 PM) You got that right, been waiting for the guy to scream at me for posting that about Austin Jackson. Ya know, at times Ryan is a great poster, but he loves to be right. Not as bad as Hoopsguru was, but dang, all I ask is to be a bit more positive. I just try to get along with him. But sometimes I want to just choke him. Hah Ryan is reasonable at times, but sometimes you'd swear he was drunk when he makes some of the comments he makes... SHEEESH! Just makes you shake your head sometimes. OK, enough of the private convo on the public board! LOL!

QUOTE(MnSoxFan @ Apr 11, 2005 -> 05:38 PM) Now go argue with Ryan Christie Oh good lord. Guy is just unreasonable. I'm not a pollyanna, but sheeesh, guy must live a depressing existence to always have that attitude. I'm sure the other guy will also tell me that Austin Jackson is a sure-in at Ga Tech and that he is going to play both Hoops(colleg) and baseball(pro) despite being a 1st rounder this June...

QUOTE(MnSoxFan @ Apr 8, 2005 -> 06:27 PM) Looks like Josh Hanson beat him out for Kanny Hansen is a veteran at that level. Didn't beat Lucy out. They spread out the catchers and mix the prospects with the veterans. Reports I got on Lucy is that he was good defensively, but yeah, he struggled behind the plate. If Lucy isn't with a full-season league, it's because he was beaten out by Francisco Hernandez, not Josh Hansen. BTW, early-round position-player college picks skipping Kanny after a starting out at Great Falls seems to be a common path the Sox have taken with prospects lately (regardless of success or playing no more than a few games due to injury), so I tend to believe the BA roster that has Lucy listed at Winston-Salem(although it's on the DL, and I hadn't seen anything about that previously)...

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Apr 8, 2005 -> 02:23 AM) Good stuff. Too bad about Brice. I am not much of a fan when minor league free agents steal the playing time of potential prospects. At the same time I realize the teams want to win and having a few vets that can hit the ball helps in that regard. Thats also a pretty interesting staff WS has. Could Brice be hurt? I have not seen him mentioned in any articles.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Apr 8, 2005 -> 12:20 AM) I remember the first time I saw Reynoso. I figured career minor leaguer, then I took a look at the guns and was like holy s***, are these things broken, cause I had never heard anything about him. Didn't realize he was a converted infielder at the time, but I really think he's got a shot to turn into a pretty quality reliever. Reynoso has a great arm. He could be a hell of a pitcher if he figures it out upstairs and can transform his mechanics into something resembling consistency. When I saw Reynoso last year, I was ready to be underwhelmed. Well, the kid worked very slow and nibbled all over the place instead of trusting his stuff. The 3 W-S pitchers charting the game were just shaking their heads... "I wish I had this kid's arm..." and these were NOT career minor league-types... these were legit prospect-type pitchers saying this... He was the human rain delay out there too... Needless to say, the one time I saw him pitch this spring on tv, looked like a different pitcher. Was working relatively quickly, and was throwing strikes. If he can continue that, kid has a bright future.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Apr 6, 2005 -> 04:27 PM) Hochevar's put up sick numbers, but would I be correct in saying he won't last till 15? Ramos might, though -- would he be a wise choice at 15? I know it's early to tell, and I'm throwing a lot at you, but if you could answer a couple of them, I'd appreciate it a lot. This year there may only be 2 or 3 college pitchers taken in the top half of the first round. Hochevar and Pelfrey will likely be gone in the top 5-7 picks as of right now, and Townsend and McCormick in the 10-15 range, Hansen is a reliever, so mid-to-late first round, probably. Where does Weaver go? Whoever drafts him knows they'll have to put up big money. Same with Drew. It's pretty early, and these HS players have to get out to some of the showcases before we can really start to get a feel for where the top 10-15 picks will start dropping and have a clearer picture of who may be available at #15. Sox with no sandwich or 2nd round picks this year, gotta make that #1 count.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Apr 6, 2005 -> 04:27 PM) Cesar Carillo, Miami Throws about 90 mph, with 4 pitches, fastball, curve, change, and slider. Throws strikes, lives off his control. Second round pick, IMO. Doesn't project all that well. Could be a value pick for a stats-based org in the sandwich or early second round, otherwise, mid 2nd...

Can't wait to start reading/writing game day reports and checking out how some of these guys start their season, particularly last year's draftees in the lower levels... I should get to see a bunch of W-S and Kanny games this year with a few Charlotte games sprinkled in... Should be a riot!

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Apr 6, 2005 -> 06:35 PM) Brian Miller = Overrated and I couldn't tell you anything about Javier Castillo. Reynoso is a legit sleeper. I agree on Miller. All these publications say he throws low 90's, but when I saw him and talked to him, he said he really only throws in the 88-89 mph range. He has decent movement, but I just don't get it, especially when BA had him rated so high last year... I got a chance to see Castillo play a few games with Bristol last year, my more detailed notes are at home. Good range, and defensively has a strong arm and moves fluidly for a SS his size. He looked overmatched to me at the plate in rookie ball, so I don't know what to think of him in Class A this year...

QUOTE(BHAMBARONS @ Apr 5, 2005 -> 08:35 AM) Razor didn't say anything like that last night but he was very dissapointed he said that Jose's first violation and it will be 15 days suspension Espinal was reportedly release by the White Sox.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Apr 6, 2005 -> 08:24 PM) Head is supposed to be quite the player, I know a lot of services have him going quite high in the 1st round. At this time of the year I can't comment on many of the SEC guys other than stuff I've read or heard. Looking forward to watching the games as more get televised, both on ESPN and on the Fox Sports college stations. Speaking of college players, anyone notice how well Wes Hodges has been doing? The kid's hitting at an OPS rate of 1.277 in 120 AB's. Kid is a stud. Said from day 1 he was "the one who got away"...

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Apr 6, 2005 -> 03:40 AM) Valdez at 29, meh I'll just imagine that's Tom Brice instead. Yep, my problem was in the 20's when there were more legit low-level prospects that should have been "on the radar", there were some REALLY uestionable additions to the list. Did Francisco Hernandez blowing up this year put more focus on the Dominican league prospects in the organization? I like Haigwood, but I still think Rodriguez has more potential and a better arm. Pollok, Valdez and Collaro? Blech! I'd have rather seen Lucas Harrell, Adam Russell, Lucy, or Nanita... at least those guys have a chance to ascend the list in the future. I'm not a big fan of propping up college hitters who have a good half-season in rookie ball... Where is Paulino Reynoso? I think the depth this year is amazing when you look at the barren top 30 lists of the past 2 years.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Apr 5, 2005 -> 11:59 PM) Any chance we grab this kid at #15? In addition to what Jason said, no, it's highly unlikely the Sox draft him at #15. Romero isn't as projectible as some of the prospects rated below him and that's not even taking into account HS kids. Romero will be a late first, or sandwich pick in all likelihood. With no second round pick, I'm really hoping to see the Sox make a splash with that #15 pick or take some signability guys in the mid rounds and pony up the money...

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 24, 2005 -> 11:05 AM) And that is a product of being around the plate a lot. Brad Radke and Mark B give up their fair share of solo shots as well. Plus the waste pitch could be something that Brandon learns as he matures. That and BMac throws a 12-6 curve, often-times for strikes, and when you leave those up on occassion, they can be "crushable"

QUOTE(danman31 @ Mar 23, 2005 -> 08:41 PM) Ryan Rodriguez should be on there. Rafael Flores had a sub 4 ERA as a starter for Kanny, he might warrant consideration. Also, Tom Collaro (a lot of HRs at Great Falls) and Brandon Allen (5th round pick out of HS this year, struggled at Bristol, raw with loads of talent) are guys that you could add. Finally, Jason has a hard on for Heath Phillips who played for the Barons last year. That's all I can think of for now. It all depends on how many people you want on the list. Looks sweet though. Yep, Ryan Rodriguez missing was the first thing I noticed... Corwin Malone (haven't heard anything about him this spring, but supposedly "healthy" last I heard) Lucas Harrell should probably be on this list. Brandon Allen as well. Ricardo Nanita, where have ye gone?

QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Mar 23, 2005 -> 09:34 PM) Tom, I don't think Rotoworld knows anything more than anyone else in regards to such assignments. They are just speculating. That said, it would not surprise me at all to see Brian sent back to Birmingham. My guess is that either Anderson or Michael Spidale will be headed back to the Steel City. I'm still not sure why people give rotoworld the time of day when it comes to this kind of stuff. They just throw darts on this stuff, and your average regular reader of this board has a better idea of where prospects will start their seasons...

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Mar 24, 2005 -> 07:18 AM) My only real concern right now is that he gives up a fair number of homers (15 in 172 innings last year) and U.S. Cellular Field is a launching pad. Interesting comparison he did, but the HR issue isn't much of a concern to me given one primary fact. BMac doesn't put guys on base. Who cares about solo HR's?

QUOTE(JimH @ Mar 17, 2005 -> 01:34 PM) I will go with Jerry Owens as a position player primed for a breakout year. I just saw this guy play in person a few times last week and I like his thought process at the plate. In addition, he's smooth in the outfield. For a pitcher ... Paulino Reynoso. Lefthander with a live arm, had the scouts talking at the Sox-Padres game in Peoria. I also think Rob Valido is an excellent choice, he has skills and is still very young. He held his own last year at age 19 and that says a lot. Reynoso has a million dollar arm and in the past, has shown the 10 cent head, IMO... He hasn't thrown enough strikes, works painfully slow, especially with runners on base, and overall, just didn't seem like he had anything you look for in a pitcher other than an arm... That being said, this spring, he's worked faster and shown better command. If he can put it together, I agree, he has a lot of potential. Consistent low-90's LH'd pitcher with a good breaker...
