QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Nov 17, 2007 -> 11:58 PM) :headbang :headbang :headbang The Hoosiers will be playing 13!!! The atmosphere was insane. We're going bowling! -
I'm just a fountain of great ideas, aren't I.

A more fun game is if you shuffle it, and then post the opening lines of the first 10 or 20 (or however many) songs you get, and then people guess the song and band. Without Google, of course.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 14, 2007 -> 09:06 PM) Link See what happens when I don't read every thread? I miss questions for me. In a subduction environment (in Chile, the oceanic Nazca plate is sliding underneath the South American plate and heading down to the mantle) a distance of 37 miles, or about 60 kilometers, is really not that deep at all. Usually, the feature that cuts off the seismic part of the earth is temperature; when rocks get too hot, they're able to flow and don't fracture. But in a subduction zone, the plate going down is fairly cold, and is able to fracture seismically to much greater depths. For an example, here's a transect across the Sumatran subduction zone showing earthquake depths (in kilometers on the Vertical axis) versus horizontal distance across the subduction zone. In that zone, earthquakes can be resolved down to 700 kilometers depth, or something in the range of 400 miles deep. Link Man, I could have answered this as well, since I'm learning all about it in a class I'm taking right now. Sure, I couldn't respond so eloquently, but I would get the gist. And, in an attempt to at least look like I've learned something from my class.... There would be relatively few deaths because, in addition to the fact that it occurred in the middle of nowhere, damage from an earthquake depends largely on the types of buildings it hits. Buildings made out of stone and such are very susceptible to the seismic waves produced by the earthquake; wood frame building are much sturdier. In short: lots of people die if the earthquake hits areas that have buildings that are poorly constructed and/or made out of masonry, but relatively few people are affected if the buildings are made out of more "earthquake proof" materials.

Movies that were as good as, or better than, the book
farmteam replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in SLaM
QUOTE(J-MAN @ Nov 13, 2007 -> 11:37 AM) Most people probably never heard of it but "The Eye of the Needle" comes to mind. If you are a fan - all of the Harry Potter movies are as good or better than the books - amazing how the movies capture the essence of the books. I definitely disagree with the Harry Potter mention -- the movies are good, but, as I think it was Jim that said it, they can't hold a candle to the books. As for The Eye of the Needle, I have to disagree with you there as well. I'm one of the biggest Follett fans you'll find (which is perhaps the reason why I disagree), and that's book was absolutely amazing, while the movie was just ok. On a similar note, has anyone read A Dangerous Fortune by Ken Follett? It's one of my favorite books, and I think it would make a spectacular movie, if done right. I actually think they are making a tv movie version of it or something, but I can't remember. Similarly, Pillars of the Earth would make a great movie, but they'd have to shorten it by quite a bit. -

QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Nov 12, 2007 -> 11:57 PM) farm, I think you are either being too hard on Jamarcus Ellis or expecting too much. We have guys that can score. The guy had 5 points tonight, which is not all that impressive. But he added: 9 rebounds 6 assists 2 steals 1 blocked shot Yeah I realized that, but I still just haven't been impressed with him from what I've seen. Admittedly, of the starting 5 I posted, he's the last guy I left out, and I wouldn't have too much of a problem with him starting over Crawford. -

QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Nov 12, 2007 -> 10:04 PM) Don't worry about Stemler; he'll be sitting in no time, if he keeps this up. And oh yeah, Danny Granger was sitting right next to me. I hope so. I wasn't that lucky, I was stuck in the second to last row of the balcony. Who would you put in the starting 5, greasy? -

We gave them way too many open shots, and we couldn't rebound to save our lives. I'd say those two factors were both the key reasons why we allowed them to put up 50 in the first half. Other game notes: Lance Stemler is bad. Really, just bad. Jamarcus Ellis is rather unimpressive -- so far Crawford has been much better. D.J. got hurt near the end, but he was back on the bench by the end of the game. Eric Gordon is good. Very good. 1 or 2 of his fouls were complete ticky tack calls (anyone want to tell me how you can foul someone when your back is to them?). This team makes way too many turnovers by forcing a bad pass. And, as mentioned above, the rebounding deficiency hurts as well. Twice (early in the first half and towards the end of the second half) IU went with a 4-guard set. I know Ellis is considered a G/F, but come on, he's only 6-5. Anyway, they stuck Gordon, Crawford, Basset, and Ellis with White, and they didn't do horribly. Eli Holman and Brandon McGee didn't get until the end of the game, which was disappointing, especially because they could have taken some of Stemler's minutes. In addition, it seems Sampson is favoring a White/Thomas/Stemler rotation, with two of them usually playing (though rarely Stemler and Thomas are together). DeAndre looked pretty good, but he looked a little wild at times. There were a few occasions where he put too much on it and missed a point blank shot. However, he also looked good at times and played some solid defense. If I had to pick the starting five I'd do: Basset Gordon Crawford Thomas White Off the bench: Ellis Holman Stemler McGee Overall, we definitely need to work on rebounding and not turning the ball over, as well as defense as whole. -

My not-so-in-depth analysis of the IU-Northern Alabama game: Jordan Crawford was ridiculous. 9/10 from the field, including 6/6 from downtown, and he finished with 30 points. Although, he strikes me as a very emotional and streaky player, so he easily could have gone 2/10 from the field as well, if he had missed his first few shots. But still, he looked really good. Eric Gordon was as good as advertised. Lance Stemler was horribly disappointing. He made a bunch of dumb mistakes, couldn't get a hand on some rebounds, and overall just was bad. Eli Holman started slow, but picked it up by the end. DeAndre didn't have the greatest stats, and he had some dumb fouls (he fouled out), but he had 4 steals or so, and he looked quick on them. That's all for now, maybe more later. -

Not sure if someone linked this yet, but it deals with all the impact of the IU stuff on recruits: http://rivalshoops.rivals.com/content.asp?cid=733509 The gist of it is that Ebanks and Holloway will be coming here, but it's looking like Stephenson and Jones won't. -
I have a dumb xbox 360 question...I know originally that there was the Core for $300 and the Premium (I think that's what it was called; it was the one everyone bought because it came with more stuff you'd buy anyway) for $400. Can someone tell me how much a Premium is now? Or rather, if the Premium is marketed under a different name? I don't think it's the Elite, that's something else. Man, I haven't felt so out of touch with Technology in awhile.

QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Oct 20, 2007 -> 05:16 PM) The first fumble was legit, because he got popped hard. However, the other two were Rex Grossman-esque. We definitely had our chances to get the elusive sixth today. Next week's going to be rough at Wiscy, but we still have games against Ball State, Northwestern, and Purdue. We'll be playing 13. Fair enough. I just remember being angry with that because I was watching Hardy running his route, and he was wide open for the TD, and then I look back and see Lewis fumble the ball. Speaking of Hardy, he had a beast of a game. I think his final stats were 13 catches for 134 yards and 2 TDs, and that second TD catch was Sportscenter Top 10 quality. Also, Tracy Porter has the ability to pump up a crowd like no other. But I agree -- with games against Ball State and Northwestern left, we should be bowling. -

I'm still getting used to this whole college thing -- I think it's really neat when I walk out of my door and Eli Holman is standing right there, as happened last night. He was a nice guy, all smiles. -

QUOTE(Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 16, 2007 -> 07:29 PM) All I'm saying is if you look at whats happened on the field I don't see why Michigan is a sure bet to win, or why Michigan is all of a sudden "back" in the Big Ten Title race, especially when they still have some difficult games ahead and a lot of lingering issues with their team. Back in the Big Ten race? Aren't they undefeated in conference play...? -

I'm a believer in the Illini's running game after watching them run over us in Bloomington. There seemed multiple instances of Mendenhall running up the gut on 3rd and long and picking up the first. Though, I still think we lost that game more than Illinois won it, but that's a different story.
