The problem I had was I subscribed to the Sports package in DirecTV only to have everything blacked out by the Extra Innings channels

I have no problem with moves like this. I think they are good ways to try and get some potential talent without spending big bucks. The Sox seem to be trying to stock up on pitchers especially who have been taken by other teams as top picks or have shown promise. I know some shy away from players with injury history, but Tommy John surgery is not the career ending issue it may have been in the past
