2012-2013 Sox off season Catch-All thread

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jan 11, 2013 -> 11:56 AM) You think we're getting the 29th ranked propsect in baseball plus more for Rios? I think Rios has value and could probably get you one good prospect (low top 100 maybe) right now, but there are still red flags with him and teams won't give up a ton until he proves 2012 wasn't a fluke. If he does that, then we should be able to get more for him, but a top 30 prospect still seems extremely unlikely IMO. Why are we so quick to engage in this type of talk and trade suggestion? Rios is talented player and we want him traded for a low 100 prospect. Red flags? -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 11, 2013 -> 04:40 PM) Especially years down the road when we are crippled by those contracts. I agree. Plus to go a bit further on this: why spend Grienke kind of money on aplayer to add to a strength? You sign FA's to fill holes and I don't see pitching as a hole right now. Plus I didn't see the Angels win a world series after signing Pujols. He is a great player and A-Rod at one time was a top player, but the Yankees are stuck with an outrageous contract and IMO the Angeks will be too in about 5 years or so.

White Sox To Sign Gray, Troncoso, Anderson By Ben Nicholson-Smith [January 10, 2013 at 2:21pm CST] The White Sox announced that they agreed to sign seven players to minor league contracts that include invitations to MLB Spring Training. Right-handers Jeff Gray and Ramon Troncoso, left-hander David Purcey, catcher Bryan Anderson, infielders Josh Bell and Steve Tolleson and outfielder Stefan Gartrell will all report to Glendale next month. Gray pitched for the Twins in 2012, posting a 5.71 ERA with 4.5 K/9 and 3.8 BB/9 in 52 innings. Troncoso, who turns 30 next month, pitched for the Dodgers' Triple-A team in 2012. Purcey also spent the 2012 season at Triple-A, and he struck out more than one batter per inning at that level while struggling to limit walks. The 26-year-old Anderson appeared in ten games for last year's Cardinals team. Bell, formerly a top prospect, played in 21 games for the Diamondbacks in 2012. Tolleson appeared in 29 games with the 2012 Orioles, posting a .183/.227/.310 batting line as a utility player. Gartrell posted a .787 OPS with 20 home runs for the Braves' top affiliate last year. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 9, 2013 -> 08:32 PM) Biggio got about 70% this year. Do people really think that Frank will have less first ballot support than Craig Biggio? The only guy who dominated that era more than Frank is Griffey, and I think Griffey will be a guy who is famous for being up around 99% of the vote. Frank Thomas is the man for sure. He had the courage and conviction to do it the right way and call it like it was. Plus he is in my opinion the greatest right handed hitter of his era.My biggest thrill as a Sox fan was to see him hit a homer to dead center in 2005 when the Sox played the Rockies

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jan 8, 2013 -> 08:11 PM) Konerko and Dunn's 2nd half OPS's were .772 and .729 respectively. Huge red flag for the 2013 offense for me. Konerko was hurt and shoud be healed for 2013 and Dunn needs to cut down on the K's and go to left somemore. Easier said than DUNN I know LOL

John Danks surgery/rehab/recovery thread

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jan 8, 2013 -> 03:16 PM) Take Victor Martinez over Danks in the "Who is Likeliest to Return From Injury Pool." Based on what? Time lost from injury and rehab? I am betting Danks will be there at the beginning of the season, but if it is cold weather I have no problem with him being kept out a bit longer. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 5, 2013 -> 02:02 PM) Hahn has filled the holes the Sox have already. At least in terms of the major league roster. You may not like the guys he's filled them with, but if the season started today, they can field a full roster with an obvious starter and backup at each position, a rotation 6+ deep, and a full bullpen. I know people call for trades and question the line up, but really we are basically where we were in 2012. Possibly-yet to be determined obviously- less offense at catcher and better at 3B even if Keppinger starts. I would like to see a 3B move, but can live with who is on the roster now. We have pitching but no team in my opinion ever has enough. Plus another good player on the bench never hurt either.

How about going after Kyle Lohse and using Gavin Floyd as trade bait and also save his $9M or so salary to use towards signing Lohse. What kind of price is Lohse going to command for say a 3 Yr contract? I know Lohse's agent is Boras but how does Hahn deal with that guy instead of KW?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 3, 2013 -> 02:13 PM) I just read that Gordo is actually engaged to Scott Fletcher's daughter. Damn I feel old now. Wow! Me too. -
QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 31, 2012 -> 10:13 PM) I wonder how long it will be before Cabrera and Fielder are too obese to hit. Early in the 2013 season hopefully

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jan 1, 2013 -> 01:17 AM) Apparently Matt Spiegal said on the SCORE today that he was told AJ was telling anyone who would listen last year that he didn't respect Ventura. Never heard that but I will wait to see if it gets some exposure in the paper or MLB websites

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Dec 31, 2012 -> 06:00 PM) It was difficult to see a way the Sox could contend for the division when the offseason began. After ~80+% of player movement is finished it is still difficult to see. We are all even until after game one of the season is started. I think we can contend with the team we have now and I am sure there will be some improvement still coming before April

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Dec 31, 2012 -> 05:16 PM) Now that the calendar is about to turn over to 2013, the big question becomes whether or not Hahn is going to be able to make a move before 2014. I believe he is still holed up in his Montana bunker surrounded by Chef Boyardee products & batteries as he waits for the world to end. Ricky, turn your ham radio back on. We're still going to play this thing. If he is in Big Sky Country it is my mission in life to find him and shake a deal out of him

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 27, 2012 -> 10:43 PM) If he hadn't had that wrist issue last year, I think he would have. Konerko is a special player and I agree he can and has in the past hit well over .300. I do not think it is out of the realm of possibiliy to see Dunn bring that average up. If he can it will help off set the loss of AJP -

If Adam Dunn can just bring that batting average up to like .260 or so he will be a monster in 2013 -
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Dec 26, 2012 -> 04:51 PM) This has always been the first thing I think of whenever anybody mentions Fisk. I watched that game on TV when Fisk tagged out two Yankees at home plate on the same play. He stood there like a Statue daring the Yanks to try it again

Kubel or Upton fron the D-Backs. But, if AZ is asking for Ramirez I say forget it. I don't see trading a strength to fill a perceived hole. You don't really do anything except weaken yourself at one position to get stronger at another. I would also look at Upton before Kubel rehardless of Kubel being a left handed bat. Upton is younger, has mor speed and is a better fielder. If you acquire another outfielder who goes from the exisiting complement? De Aza?

Thanks AJ and good luck

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 11:05 PM) I think everyone has greatly apprciated what AJ Pierzynski has done for the White Sox franchise day in and day out for 8 seasons. I think we also believe that it's time to move on and to begin developing a young catcher. AJ can't stick around forever and now's as good a time as there ever will be. e I am certain some agree with your argument but what I think we need to remmeber is Flowers has been here awhile both in the minor and major league level and has been streaky at best with the bat. Defensively he isn't bad and apparently pitchers like his game calling. But, AJP is a proven veteran and this idea of -let's move on - doesn't make much sense. Why move on from a proven commodity? I think you keep that player and worry about areas that really need to be tended to. But. it is what it is with Sox thinking and if we don't bring back AJ there is nothing we can do about it

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 06:56 PM) Chuck Garfien @ChuckGarfien If Rangers offer AJ Pierzynski a 2-year deal, don't see how he doesn't sign it. White Sox fans, the end could be near. It does appear that with the Rangers needs and the fact the Sox don't want to spend the money for FA AJP, coupled with their desire to play Flowers, Te Rangers are the most likely destination for AJ. They may also be after Swisher. I am guessing they can afford both and will be willing to pay.

QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 06:01 PM) Since when do we pay attention to Phil Rogers? Good point!

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 05:02 PM) It is the starting point. It is the ending point. They won't negotiate. If he wants to come back, he can; if not, thanks for the memories. I think there is enough concern with Flowers ability to produce that there is serious consideration being given to bringing him back. He wil most likley go to another team thouigh such as the Rangers, who will give him more money, but any team that will pay him what he wants and the Sox won't.
