QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 30, 2008 -> 08:30 PM) I understand the anger, but the bitterness that colors the posts in the loss threads is something that should be put into a compilation and reviewed later for some serious humor... I don't think pissing away a division crown is that funny IMO....that's why people are angry. This team has too much talent...yet they're pissing it away.

QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Aug 30, 2008 -> 08:16 PM) How much better would our team be, if Kenny got over his crush and picked up Kotsay for CF instead of Griffey. Or how bout a 5th starter....
-
Tell ya what...who the hell pitched...Bowden? Just who the F is that?!? I know Ozzie's trying to give his guys the benefit of the doubt...but to tell ya the truth....OCab was right...this team has NO KILLER INSTINCT. Not with the passive likes of Crede, Paulie, Griffey, Thome. Not saying they're bad players...just no fire. I really think it's time for Ozzie to go off again. F these guys little feelers....nut up...pitchers included.

What was the point of Griffey again?....
-
WTF....nice throwaway game. Goddamn.

Paulie's startin' to feel it....

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 05:31 PM) If you are going to give him a game off, this does seem like the one to do it. It's an off day tomorrow anyway????

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 12:03 AM) I work for the sports department for a pretty major paper in the Chicago Area, and they are hurting, big time. The print market is a very scary world, and many are worried about their jobs, if they still have them. It is scary...but I don't think it will ever go away completely. I'm self-employed and do print ads, direct mail and other collateral material for automotive dealers (found my money-making niche after years of adv. agencies)...and it's one group that always needs print presence. I've come to the conclusion though that I HAVE TO learn to do web...it is the way of the world. What sucks is...CS Master Collection through Adobe....$3100. But for now I've got some Gradware to lean on. But as for the print world in general...some publications will ALWAYS be around and be profitable like some of the weekly freebie rags IMO. Case in point...New Times in Phx...currently has around 15-16 papers (last I checked) around the country. From what I understand...only 2 are profitable though...Phoenix and Denver. Advertising-based revenue obviously since it's a freebie...but 80-20 editorial to ad content. And they charge a buttload per line.

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 10:52 PM) I would say there is about a 60-40 chance that in 3 years the Sun-Times isn't in print anymore, instead all online. With as big as Jay is, especially nationally, I'm not sure if he needs the Sun-Times to "support" him. Not sure about the situation there...and I'm sure it's dog-eat-dog in a market with more than a few papers...but I can tell you out here in Phoenix...even with one main newspaper there's one thing I noticed. What I do for a living entails designing/supplying print ads to various papers. In some regards hasn't really tapered off that much....but the section you notice that is almost miniscule is the classified section. A few years ago...a Saturday and Sunday section were a good 14-18 pages big. These days...it's 3 or 4 pages at the most. Craigslist has kicked newspapers in the ass all over the country. Just my 2¢.

Personally...I was a big fan of the Women Pole Vaulters! -
QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 10:23 PM) He just got a 3 year extension in June or July and was one of the Sun-Times biggest moneymakers. There is no doubt he left on his own, and writing for the newspaper and internet are VERY different. Yes the stuff you write in the paper appears on the internet, but they are very different. Not trying to be a smartass...but how so? Just curious as to your take...which you're probably right. But it just seems to me that if you write for a paper....you have the best of both worlds. Or are you talking about the editing factor?

QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 10:26 PM) Dvoracek ftw. Stay healthy Dusty! I think if he does I have a feeling he has a monster year. Also Harrison is a 1st round talent that dropped to the 3rd because of his character issues. The thing about the Cover 2 isn't that they don't try to manufacture pressure when the line isn't getting there... they do. But they just have dull, unimaginative blitz schemes. Urlacher just comes straight in, undisguised , and gets blocked. Hopefully Dusty stays healthy because he is a beast. Harrison will be in the rotation too...and I REALLY liked what I saw of Toeaina last year...he was always in the backfield. I hear ya about the blitz schemes. An argument could be made last year about the safety issues in terms of using the corner blitz. Tell ya...this team has just as much if not more talent than most D's in the league...but I just don't think Lovie knows how to utilize them. I really wouldn't mind seeing them go young on the O-line either. IMO Barton was a steal in the 7th and I think Balogh is a diamond in the rough who very well could be starting later in the year. Williams back surgery could have a silver lining in the fact these two guys could see some significant playing time which will bode well for the future...and Williams comes back strong next year. If this team signs Fred Miller back though...I will friggin' puke. The Human Turnstile. Don't even get me going on the fact Angelo got too cute for his own good in the '07 draft and passes on Ugoh and Blalock to trade down and take Bazuin, Okwo and Wolfe....WORTHLESS!!!! -
QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 10:13 PM) His logic in leaving (saying the newspaper business is dying and he wants to get out while he still has other opportunities such as online) is actually totally accurate. I'm VERY happy he's gone, however the reaction in this thread is EXACTLY why he lasted so long and made so much money. The Sun-Times has to be crushed Mariotti left, he was a gold mine. Isn't writing the same via internet or newspaper. You write a column for the newspaper...it's on the internet. You still write...right? I think it's a cop out from Mariotti....something else is up. Not that I care...because I RARELY if ever read his garbage anyway.

Kyle Orton To Start The Season For Da Bears

QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 11:07 PM) Something about Rivera makes me think he would be like Wannstedt as a HC. I see your point there....but we'd see a much more aggressive D IMO. That's my biggest complaint about Lovie right now and that stale Tampa Cover 2. Everybody and their mom knows how to attack it right now I think and he's stubborn to a fault with it. I know Urlacher is a good defender...but I'd sure like to see him or Briggs sent after the QB more. And if Lovie had Adams starting at tackle opening night...I'm gonna puke. As for Lovie...I was never thrilled with the hire in the first place. Look at the stats for his last few years with the Rams...they gave up yards by the mileage. -

QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 10:34 PM) Also I think Rivera was an overrated coordinator who was a product of the elite personnel he had the luxury of calling plays for... he was not that good. The same things I complain about Babich doing, I complained about Rivera doing at some point. Rivera was a better playcaller but that's about all. You pretty much validated my argument...both were Lovie's handpuppets...but Rivera was more resistant to it. Hell...Rivera will probably be the next HC after Lovie...which would fine by me (even though I'm on the Cowher bandwagon). -

QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 10:32 PM) Find me a QB who can NOT hit the open man most of that time with 5+ seconds to throw and only having to worry about his jersey occasionally being tubbed. Pretty much any QB can do it (even Rex who has done it multiple times against the same SF team), and the QB who cannot doesn't even belong in the NFL. Too bad the Bears QBs don't have that option. I was about 7 rows away in the very 1st offensive series in SD last year when Miller almost got Grossman killed. Book out on Grossman...bring all-out pressure...he can't handle it. Like I said...we'll see how Kyle does. But I think he steps up and checks off better than Grossman. -

QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 05:01 PM) Again, this has to do with the fact that SF brought close to zero pass rush and has relatively little to do with Orton himself aside from the fact that he proves he isn't completely inept. You mean little for the fact he hit the open man most of the time? This team goes as far as the O-line takes it (protection and run blocking-wise) IMO. The D...I just think people have figured out Lovie's Tampa Cover 2 and he's too damn stubborn to put in many wrinkles. And people who blame Babich IMO are ridiculous since he's basically Lovie's hand puppet when he canned a competent Rivera. -
QUOTE (sox1844 @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 09:46 PM) Really? Who else said that? All I see is him laughing and doing funny handshakes in the dugout. Hate is a pretty strong word. So you think a guy going into the FA market is gonna come off as a jerkoff on camera in the dugout. The dude just seems like a strange bird for some reason. That being said...I'd take him at 24M for 3 years....but no more than that. The guy's a good player no matter how strange he is...

Awesome job by Gavin giving the team a lift and the pen a nice rest.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 08:40 PM) There's another broadcasting team that I remember really liking, but now I can't recall which one. Perhaps it was the Royals, Mariners, or Blue Jays? EDIT: Actually, I think it was the Tigers' announcers. In fact, I'm pretty sure it is them now. When I first started reading yer post...those are the first guys that came to mind...Tigers. They are pretty good. I HATE the Royals announcers...whine too much. Mariners = VERY BAD...and old. Blue Jays...don't remember. The Rays weren't too bad IIRC...

QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 08:30 PM) Gary Thorne and Buck Martinez are a good duo. Sucks they are stuck in Baltimore and we are stuck with what we have. I've really enjoyed listening to these two the past few days. Very knowledgable...very complimentary of the Sox...and keep their nostalgia stories VERY short and sweet.
-
Griffey with 2 of the cheapest hits I've seen tonight. But who cares...they look like line drives in the box score.

QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 08:09 PM) hawk talking about how we looking good for the strecth run with 30 games left...I dunno, our problems lie on the defensive side of the ball, dumb mistakes that cost us games and don t get me started on the bullpen...plus we can t bunt worth a damn and that could bite us in the playoffs I don't know my friend....I really like our chances.

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 07:31 PM) wish he'd start pulling the ball. well...I'll take him lining out to the oppo as opposed to popping up anyday of the week.
