Well the optimistic side of it is that he might hit well enough to put him at 1B. And I know better than to assume that any given infielder will manage to be an acceptable outfielder even if he technically has the athleticism to cover the ground out there. I see him as sort of a rich man's Jake Burger which, to be fair, could be a pretty good thing!

Oof, I don't know how that ball came out. Meidroth is an excellent defender but he struggles on tags in general.

This is just me and not like the industry consensus or anything, but my gut feeling is if Bonemer has an MLB career he ends up as a primary 1B after toiling at some other spots like 2B or 3B.

Davis did a hell of a job tonight. First inning was a stinker but frankly could have gone a lot differently if Rice's soft chopper was hit a few inches further fair. And he saved our pen after that.

It certainly wouldn't be a good thing! I'm just noticing a lot of very strong optimism about Roch and negativity about the guys we see on TV more often. This crowd won't respond well to negative info about Roch, that's for sure.

FWIW, Statcast says the Sox have been the 7th best challenging team this season. Very inaccurate but ultimately at the team level all that matters is how many times you win.

For now I'll stick to my guns and say I'm not gonna worry too much about Colson yet. It's an archetype that's going to be painful to watch sometimes

I'm kind of surprised that the Sox liked Haase enough to put him in Charlotte but not enough to put him on the MLB team. I think it's entirely possible that he doesn't actually outplay these two dimwits but I wouldn't mind finding out.

Well, his good play is why I say you can't replace him. But if I had to put money down I'd probably be betting against him as the Sox everyday CF a calendar year from now. I hope I'm wrong though!

Sox are in a weird spot since on one hand, you have a clear need for more starting pitching...BUT you could use a little more offense too. But there's only one position you can really target (catcher). I'm kind of a Peters nonbeliever but you can't go out and get a new CF right now. And while I'd like the Sox to be the kind of team that would replace Benny, in practical terms you can't replace him even though you should be getting more production out of your full-time DH. Every other spot is occupied by a long-term piece and none of them are playing poorly.

I think a lot of the "fastballs" were kick changes. Rice was swinging at them like they were too.

Cheap hit from Rice really hurts when you follow it with a walk. Then a 50/50 ball from Goldie gets through. And then you throw something slow down the middle to Spencer Jones for some reason.

Detmers career summary: 2021: Tough, short rookie season 2022: Nice 25 start performance, peripherals a little mediocre but nothing to complain about. 129 innings 2023: Decent 28 start performance, peripherals somewhat consistent but the actual run scoring went the wrong direction 2024: Horrible, some signs of bad batted ball luck (FIP et al not as bad as 6+ ERA) but he made half a season of starts in AAA and got bombed there too 2025: Solid season out of the bullpen, although the numbers aren't great for a reliever. Fielding independent statistics continue to like his performance better than ERA does 2026: Nice season, quickly approaching all-time high in innings and again fielding independent statistics think he deserves better than his 4 ERA. Had a really bad stretch of starts recently but his most recent 3 were good. To me, I just have a hard time endorsing paying a real high price for this guy. The stuff is good, no doubt. But there's not that much of a track record of strong performance, his last reasonably good season as a starter before this one was in 2023 and even that was a year he posted a 4.48 ERA (4.13 FIP, 4.57 xERA, 4.14 SIERA for the sabermetricians at home). He's still young and there's not many injury issues in the past that I know of. His recent performance is more or less his best performance, although that's almost always true of players who get lots of attention as a top trade candidate — you are frequently buying high. This season, the metrics say he deserves better than the 4.03 ERA, although I also take note that he has rather consistently underperformed the metrics. Statcast says the defense behind Detmers has been 6 runs worse than average this season, so maybe that explains it all. But there's a lot of explaining you have to do about why this guy is not just worth having on your team, but worth paying a high price for. You get 2 more years after this with team control. Have to weigh what you expect happens with regard to a lockout here since that's half of your future control. Obviously, he'd a big upgrade for the White Sox. But if you think Bonemer is a top 25 prospect, then no way you trade him for this guy. IMO, of course

So here's a bit of data that might explain why it feels that way. Overall, he chases less than league average. But with 2 strikes, he's a good tick above league average at chasing (compared to the league's average with 2 strikes). So to some extent he avoids chasing by being passive. I started looking for this when I was surprised by how not-that-bad Brooks Baldwin's chase rate was (it's because he was so passive early in the count and near-worst in MLB at chasing with 2 strikes) relative to how it felt when I watched him

I think to some extent he was only left in to get the groundout because they needed time to get Murphy loose. I'm betting that the decision to pull him was made once the bases were loaded and the brain trust was just gritting their teeth for the one more batter they needed to get Murphy in.
