QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Mar 13, 2007 -> 04:50 PM) http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6466022 You'll only look foolish continuing to doubt we received the best available package for Garcia. Just admit it. I don't care what he says. How do you know that KW didn't ask for the moon earlier in the offseason, and then came back and got Floyd and Gonzalez, two guys he wanted, for Freddy when he saw that Freddy's value sucked. Rosenthal doesn't know that? You don't know that. I don't know that we received the best package available, I don't have a clue whether KW did or didn't. My point is you dont' have a clue either.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Mar 13, 2007 -> 04:40 PM) In Ken Rosenthal article posted last month, he mentioned how Philadelphia was surprised the asking price for Garcia was so low. I interpret that as meaning something else could have been added. Gonzalez/Castro/Additional minor leaguer and I have would been happy. That's hardly blowing someone out of the water, but at least we have potential in Castro (either within the bullpen or rotation) and the extra piece, which sure beats the alternative of nothing. It could mean that, or it could mean that KW asked everywhere and Freddy's value sucked. We have ZERO idea whether KW asked for more and Philly said no or whether Philly would have even bothered to give him up. KW knows what he is doing though. It's not like he didn't know what Freddy's value was QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Mar 13, 2007 -> 04:44 PM) It very well could have been the best deal at the time, but teams always need pitching and KW was holding all of the cards. He could have waited them out. He could have asked for the moon like he did with Garland. You dont' know that he didn't ask for the moon for Freddy.

QUOTE(quickman @ Mar 13, 2007 -> 04:36 PM) i know you didn't post to me, but if it wasn't the best package, then I would have just stuck with freddie until all star time. could have gotten more, or hell maybe we could have been in first place with him. i realize its hindsight, but the phils would not be giving up on there number one pick if they thought he could play. They needed pitching, and now we need pitching. I wasn't speaking to that though. Whether it was a good move or not. You never know what KW could or couldn't get at the deadline. I just wanted to know how Flash knew that wasn't the best package. He sure was speaking with a lot of conviction, so I figured maybe he had bugged KW's phone and heard all the proposals for Freddy.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Mar 13, 2007 -> 04:32 PM) I completely agree with this. Garcia deal was just done horribly. In future seasons, if Garland/Contreras are delt, it should be for the best available package rather than obtaining an enigma such as Floyd. Gonzalez was a quality piece, but Floyd appears to me more of an addition done merely to prove, "HEY, we did get something in 2007 for Garcia!" I feel similarly about Masset as well. How do you know that wasn't the best available package?

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Mar 13, 2007 -> 04:29 PM) Well to properly evaluate him, he needs to go in a starting role against more seasoned talent. I am sure that he can dominate minor leaguers, I want to see how he fairs against the big leaguers. I'd imagine that he will get that shot.

QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 13, 2007 -> 04:27 PM) If Floyd and McCarthy pitch this entire season as starters in the majors, I would bet my soxtalk membership that McCarthy would win more games and have a better ERA. It simply amazes me that Floyd is even being considered for the 5th starter spot....he's just not a good pitcher. I guess the only way to compare is if they both go all the way. I'll guess we'll see in September or so. Possibly earlier. If I had to guess I'd say Danks would have the better chance to do it. Who knows tho.
-
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Mar 13, 2007 -> 04:27 PM) Danks line, 3 innings 2 hits 2 runs both earned 1 walk and 3 strikeouts. I would like to see it against the starters. Only 1 of Danks runs was earned. Andy Gon had 2 errors. Not that it matters.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 13, 2007 -> 04:18 PM) If either Floyd and Danks both aren't ready to start for the MLB club, then KW really messed up by trading McCarthy. I don't care if he likes him or not....at least he's ready to be a 5th starter in the majors. I liked the McCarthy trade, but the timing is terrible with all of our offensive players aging and getting close to leaving via free agency. I think either Danks or Floyd can do as well as Bmac will do this year. Obviously we won't know for awhile though.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Mar 13, 2007 -> 04:11 PM) I would say that this means more for vets, because of an established pattern. They realize that Garland has a body of work, so his numbers may not project it. However with the kids competing you have to compare apples to apples. I'm not saying you have to throw out all the numbers. I'm just saying that most often, they are SO much different than what you find in the regular season. I'm not saying Danks isn't the better person for the job. He very well could be. But you can't look at his line and then look at Danks' and say automatically that Danks is more prepared for the job. QUOTE(SoxAce @ Mar 13, 2007 -> 04:12 PM) You are very hard to understand. The second Danks is supposed to be Floyd. So confusing, I know.
-
QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Mar 13, 2007 -> 04:10 PM) Exactly. Am I supposed to accept the coaching staff's decision to select Floyd if what they see concerning "intangibles" doesn't match the statistics? What does it say if he's throwing strikes and getting smacked around? If they believe his arm isn't loose, or some legitimate reason other than mediocrity, I'd wish someone would say it. I don't want to read the newspaper tomorrow and hear Williams or Cooper tell me he did well when the results obviously suggested otherwise. Well, I'm certainly going to believe the coaches over a bunch of ST numbers. If it keeps going like this I would imagine that they would pick Danks. But that doesn't mean he is the better person for the fifth starter positions. You just can't look at numbers with any seriousness in ST.
-
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Mar 13, 2007 -> 04:06 PM) So if one guy attacks the strikezone and gets out without getting rocked and the numbers show it, compared to a guy who attacks the strikezone and give us doubles and runs. Well obviously they would go with person one in that case. That doesn't mean that person one will be the better fifth starter tho.
-
QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Mar 13, 2007 -> 04:06 PM) So in your mind, how exactly do we determine the 5th starter? Will Floyd still be in the rotation with a 15.00 ERA come April if the scouts are satisfied with his arm angle? Not necessarily the scouts. moreso the coaches. And we determine it by the stuff I just talked about. The coaches understand that just because Floyd has a high ERA doesn't mean that'll be the case in the regular season and vice versa on Danks. Now, if Danks keeps throwing strikes and keeps walks down chances are his numbers will be better than Danks and they'll ulitimately choose him. Unfortunately, everyone, or most everyone, knows that he could still get demolished once the regular season starts.
-
QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Mar 13, 2007 -> 04:03 PM) What has happened now is exactly the type of crap we need to avoid. Just looking at the boxscore -- Botts replaced Sosa, Gold - Wilkerson, Guzman - Lofton, Vazquez - Young. How the hell are we supposed to judge him fairly? By the pitches he throws. By how he attacks the strike zone. By how he goes about it mentally. The coaches understand what to look for.
-
Danks has thrown 2IP 1BB 3SO, but unfortunately like everyone else in Arizona, ST numbers don't mean anything, whether good or bad

QUOTE(SoxAce @ Mar 13, 2007 -> 03:53 PM) I'd take Heads' word over most posters anyday. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/boxscore.jsp?gid=2...chamlb_texmlb_1 It's not my word. It's mlb.com's word. I just pass along what I see. And Mack threw someone out at home. Doubt that would happen from CF

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Mar 13, 2007 -> 03:51 PM) Thats changed then from the info we received.. In the original game day, and the original lineups they had Erstad playing LF, Terrero in RF, and Mack in CF. Thats more like it then. Haha. I didn't know one way or the other. It was funny as hell reading this thread tho as I just got in. But Erstad is listed as the CF. Not that it would matter either way. It's spring f***in training
-
So everyone does realize that Mack is playing LF today right? LOL

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 13, 2007 -> 10:04 AM) Cotts 7.20 era 5 IP 14 hits 4 er 8 runs 1k 0bb 1wp Aardsma 11.11 era 5.2 IP 11 hits 7 er 8 runs 4k 3bb I don't think anyone is "winning" this deal so far. Besides it is WAY too early for this stuff. Way, way, way way way way way way too early for this stuff

QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 13, 2007 -> 08:47 AM) I disagree. With the tough LHP in our division, you need every last bit of offense you can get against them. Rowand's a pretty solid hitter against LHP, and I would actually state I'd rather see him batting against the likes of C.C. and Santana than I would Brian Anderson. Of course, the two guys I'd most want to see face the tough lefties are Ozuna and Eduardo Perez. You're going to see one but probably not the other.

Always a good laugh to go back and read some of the posts from when Thornton was acquired. http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=47754

QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 12, 2007 -> 08:33 PM) The Brian Anderson situation has nothing to do with the posters on here. It all has to do with one man. And that man's name is Brian Anderson. QUOTE(ScottyDo @ Mar 12, 2007 -> 09:50 PM) I think the majority of us want BA to start the year in CF. Maybe not Ozzie, but he's not on this board. Is he? I think if he was he would have beaten up some of his haters by now. And called them f**s. Like Jay Mariotti. Ozzie would love to have BA start in center. Of course that's only if BA doesn't suck.

QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 12, 2007 -> 05:11 PM) Aardsma has had one good month. The only thing intriguing about him so far in his career is that he's first alphabetically. That is interesting.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 12, 2007 -> 04:51 PM) God damnit, I skip lunch today, and Farmer's talking about piles of ribs and like 6 pulled pork sandwiches. Valido I believe with a leadoff single. Owens comin' up. Owens with a first pitch single. Lopez works a full count and then pops out to short left. yummmmm. I could really go for some good ribs right now. And I'm going to make a bold prediction. Oneli Perez will soon be GONE. haha. that poor guy is awful.
-
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 12, 2007 -> 04:35 PM) Terrero pops out to short. Fields walks. 8th inning, 6-2 Padres. Mack makes first on an error by Blum. 1st & 3rd, 1 out. Fields scores on a sac fly. Mack tries to take 2 bases, and is thrown out at 3rd. 6-3 Padres. I think Aardsma is out but Farmer isn't nice enough to tell me who's in to pitch. Instead, he's telling me about a pulled pork sandwich. yummmm. pulled pork sandwich.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Mar 12, 2007 -> 02:26 PM) Our minor league pitchers give up a ton of runs, however I dont remember our starters just getting torched time and time again.
