Bernstein: Sources say White Sox might be for sale
If Berlin wants to own a baseball team, and one of the lets say 4 nearby teams opens up, it doesn't matter which one he's a fan of. There are few opportunities that come around.

QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ Aug 26, 2016 -> 09:05 AM) Hillary gave them an out on this mess, Obama did too, and I think I figured out why. Republican leaders have been dog-whistling to white nationalism for decades now (this didn't just happen out of nowhere, Trump is just the blacklight in a hotel room), and any of Trump's 16 challengers could've given the same speech, but chose not to. By doing this, Hillary is trying to cause permanent damage in the GOP coalition, where they'll have to completely re-form as something else. They'll reform as something remarkably similar. As long as they don't "sound like trump" they won't be trump. They'll have the same outs they always had. But maybe things will be different.

When they found out they were he gave her a prenup.

Shields could lose rotation spot
QUOTE (shysocks @ Aug 25, 2016 -> 09:32 AM) Oh man, I hadn't even thought of the 20 loss angle. He could be the first guy since Maroth of the 2003 Tigers to pull that one off. Before that it was 1980. I don't root for the white sox to lose, but...this is one exception. It would just be so perfect to have a 20 game winner and 20 game loser on the same team.

2016-2017 NFL Thread
The scale is straightforward and was a huge win for owners. That an owner can get a top 5 pick and try to exploit it is ridiculous. This should be used as an example why Spanos should not be allowed to move the team. He should be forced to sell. If you are an NFL owner would you want your teams money being funneled to this idiot crying poor?

The best way for sox to get ahead of this (too late) would be to announce specific park upgrades they will use money for (zipline from upper deck to chisox bar and grill)

That report was bad, especially their examples. But, going back a couple pages to the gawker article "woodward and bernstein were no woodward and bernstein", I do wonder whether journalisms preoccupation with process in reporting leads to these trumped up nothings. They tie two hands behind their back and then say 'well we put a lot of resources in this so we are just ognna throw it out there as negative anyway" Edit: who is capable of doing this reporting anymore. The groundbreaking reports of MJ on federal prisons and pro publica in many are a different kind of beast. No one is capable of going up against the powerful when they are just using litigation.

Dave Kaplan reports Kenny Williams holding back Rick Hahn
QUOTE (Donaldo @ Aug 24, 2016 -> 07:48 PM) I agree with your point, but I think you're selling a few guys a little short. Mike Morse hit .276 with 104 HR and 352 RBI over his 12 year career. He was a pretty solid player; sometimes you have to give up something to get something. Olivo wasn't a great catcher, but he was pretty good (both offensively and defensively). The M's also sent us Ben Davis, a good defensive catcher who couldn't hit his way out of a paper bag. IMO, both sides benefited from that trade. Gio Gonzalez and Fautino de los Santos for Nick Swisher... BAD TRADE Kip Wells, Sean Lowe, and Josh Fogg for Todd Ritchie... BAD TRADE Shouldergate was a disaster for both teams (IIRC, Toronto GM Gord Ash actually lost his job over that trade). But the point is the sox used to explicitly benefit from trades where they acquired ML ball players for minor league talent and it didn't hurt their overall club. NOt that they were 100%, because Ritchie was IMO multiples worse than the Samardjiza trade. But the run of inconsequential acquisitions we made is alarming. For hahn's we have 2 very good acquisitions in the beginning - Abreu and Eaton. But there is no Loaiza for Contreras, Miles for Uribe, Borchard for Thornton, (this will be controversial but) Marte for Guerrier(sp?), Dye, Garcia, Ramirez, Thome, i.e. no players that were acquired that were significantly good on the sox that would offset any losses. We are constantly acquiring for the most marginal of upgrades at the acquired spot and killed by depth issues. We had great pro scouting for 2000s and I don't know what the hell happened to it but it has been horrible. Edit: Rienzo for D. Jennings is Hahn's 2nd best trade. MiGo is probably now my 3rd ranking.

New Ballpark Name
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 25, 2016 -> 09:12 AM) No. I actually am totally against publicly funded stadiums. I'm just showing that this deal is a positive for taxpayers of IL. That is what really matters. The state will get more money. I don't know if Guaranteed Rate is a good company or not, I would imagine they were vetted, but we can find lawsuits and huge fines with any large company. If JP Morgan Chase bought the rights would anyone complain? They have been fined billions of dollars. You are right, that was just using your post to jump off of. Sorry.

New Ballpark Name
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Aug 25, 2016 -> 09:10 AM) This makes sense. Dick is one of the only ones making sense in here. They took the best deal they could find for the naming rights. The name isn't ideal but it doesn't really matter. If the team can get better and find a way to win, nobody will care about the name of the stadium. I said yesterday that they can call it Turd Sandwich Field if the team gets better for all I care. Those of you that are adults and still have Cubs/Sox arguments with dips***s, well I can't help you there. This thread is awful. No one will eventually care about it. BUt for the record, at least with the naming rights to US Cellular the sox marketed the change letting everyone know of specific stadium improvements we would see and updated fans on how those changes would be coming. This change, happening this year, a year where sox fans would love to talk about a competitive baseball team, but in the perpetual absence of one, would at least like to not be forced to talk about a 12 year old taking down the clubhouse, a starting pitcher cutting up jerseys in tantrum, the worst starting pitcher stretch in history, and now naming our stadium the equivelant of being put in the town stocks to have tomatoes thrown at us. Not much to ask. Just the basic competence the majority of other franchises are capable of.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 25, 2016 -> 09:01 AM) ISFA Chairman Manny Sanchez said that move could save the stadium authority as much as $25 million in facility upgrades over the course of the final years of the Sox's lease. "That's a huge piece of this from an ISFA perspective," Sanchez said. "This is something that is a really, really serendipitous godsend that we have encountered." Revenue and savings late during the next decade will be critical for ISFA, which uses hotel tax revenue and annual city and state subsidies to pay off the debt from the renovation of Soldier Field and the construction and maintenance of the Sox's park. That annual debt obligation will steadily balloon from $38.5 million for the year ending June 30, 2017 to $87 million in 2032. This post appears to aim that we should be thanking Jerry for saving the state for paying for his f'ing stadium's construction and maintenance by auctioning off the franchises dignity to a bunch of wrigleyville lending bros. Thanks Jerry.
