Sox/Cubs rank in bottom 5 for local TV ratings
I imagine the % of hardcore to casual fans for white sox is pretty similar to elsewhere. I just don't think there is a large amount of sox fans so it becomes exaggerated.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 30, 2014 -> 08:37 PM) Dantonio put Gholston back in the game after being knocked out cold with a head injury and nobody was clamoring for the AD and coach to be fired, because they were winning. I honestly don't care for these stupid message board games of bringing up every other example of other cases and grading the outrage, but at least in that case: MSU was better at lying He was taken off the field after that play and was administered a concussion test They are incompetent and/or lied about that test and put him back in Michigan: -Did not take him off the field - Took him off the field and then examined his ankle - Sent him back out onto the field - Have confirmed he had a concussion Michigan doesn't have the cover of their staff performing their job correctly and possibly lying, they have their staff having perfomed incorrectly and confirming that the kid was put out with a concussion. It's not the same. Gary Pinkel also put out a player in 2004 bowl game and he finished the game. Nobody cared then. We know more now, people need to be held accountable for players health. There can't always just be "systemic breakdown...nobodies fault".

I disagree. He wouldn't get fired, but this is just another example of incompetence. People in the stadium and the announcers were pretty upset. I think it was also less the him playing another snap then also throwing him out there after Gardner.

QUOTE (Brian @ Sep 30, 2014 -> 01:42 PM) I'd guess Hoke is gone after the season and the AD sooner or later. What a F up. Releasing a statement at 1am. Wouldn't be shocked if Morris didn't return next year. Where is a link to this? I saw some twitter references but no article about it.

QUOTE (Brian @ Sep 28, 2014 -> 02:32 PM) At first I never would've thought Hoke would be fired in season, but starting to feel likely, especially after Kansas just did it to Weis. Just saw video of that QB staying in the game. That was terrible.

QUOTE (danman31 @ Sep 28, 2014 -> 03:38 AM) SEC overranking in the polls is rampant, but also irrelevant. All that matters is the top 4. A crap Missouri team getting ranked after a s***ty performance that somehow won getting ranked 25 is meaningless if it happens. I know I wouldn't vote for them, but I also saw South Carolina get dominated in every aspect by Texas A&M in Week 1 and knew that team wasn't good. A team being 12 instead of 18 ultimately means nothing. Good Lord. I can't believe you are crying so much about an in conference road win especially with white and hunt out on offense. Maybe college football is just down this year. There were so many great senior qbs that graduated and their replacements haven't looked very good. I'd say Oregon is hands down number one except they always trip up. Is there a top team anyone feels great about?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 25, 2014 -> 04:58 PM) But just as an example, the last "expansion" was the exact opposite of what you said. Government spending as a share of GDP was lower in the 2002-2007 expansion than it was during any time since before the 1980 recession and at the same time, the growth was much more concentrated at the top than any time beforehand. The 1992-1997 expansion saw decreases in government spending compared to the previous expansion and increases in inequality. Government might play a role in this by rigging the game in favor of the rich as laws get easier to buy, but varying government spending levels from one expansion to another do not support the trend you're saying exists. The trend in increasing inequality continues regardless of whether government has expanded or contracted. Growth in income. It was still fine because people accumulated so much wealth in their homes. It was a great 5 year run.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Sep 25, 2014 -> 04:14 PM) I wonder if he has part ownership in grantland as well? Not sure how the contract would have been written. Simmons is awesome and ESPN should take a lot of heat from what has happened. Problem is they control much of the airwaves. I bet he has full ownership over the name and product, and this is a "partnership", we've seen similar agreements as with Andrew Sullivan's "Daily Dish" and his partnership with The Atlantic and Daily Beast. Seems like this is a similar set up, with the bonus of "shared content".

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Sep 25, 2014 -> 03:42 PM) His writing is becoming pretty meh these days, unless it's on a topic he really cares about. The sports guy schtick is old and has been bested by other bloggers. His podcasts are still the best, and his stuff on the NBA with Rose is the best. Their preview special is going to be great. But I think he can do all of that stuff elsewhere. I guarantee you Fox would pay him a great deal and let him have more control than ESPN. Yahoo is another option. Maybe even Turner sports with the NBA. I don't think he would have a problem finding another gig willing to pay him for his followers. Would he have the same amount as with ESPN? Probably not. But 80-85% would stick with him, and who knows, maybe he can get more popular with Fox or others pushing him (think NFL Sunday or the TNT NBA crew). Fair enough, I just don't know that people realize how sweet a package he was given. I think he's just stretched thin now with NBA tv, which sucks, because his NBA writing was the most fun. Re: comment about the journalistic standards: Simmons has said equally if not more provocative stuff regarding specific athletes or say, Sterling. Not a peep from ESPN.

My other favorite part was how their ombudsman put out a blog post about how the coverage of the ray rice situation was one of his proudest moments of his Ombudsman career. In it he referenced Simmons coverage among others. Luckily, ESPN took down the entire ombudsman section from their web site.

QUOTE (lord chas @ Sep 25, 2014 -> 03:29 AM) Will be interesting what Simmons' next move is since he fought so hard for creative control with Grantland and the 30/30 series The problem is even if he goes out on his own he'll never make as much money or be able to hire as many people as with the ESPN backing. That said, I'd love if he removed himself from tv and went back to writing and podcasts.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 24, 2014 -> 10:32 PM) So just a small topic of discussion on a slow day: What do you feel happened to Eli Manning? Is he a victim of the team around him becoming worse, or do you hang all of it on Eli? In his two Super Bowl seasons, he was surgical down the stretch and really made other teams pay. Now, he seems just as likely to throw a pick or fumble as he is to get a completion. Just curious what you guys think, me and a friend had this discussion today I think it is 100% on the crap line and crap team around him. He always had an element of being a headcase. But last year eliminated virtually all of good Eli, just one year after being pretty dang good. You saw last week what he can do with some time.
