  1. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Oct 7, 2005 -> 08:38 PM) I heard Berman say "c'mon big Papi, hit a home run" under his breath okay, that was intelligent
  2. QUOTE(bmags @ Oct 7, 2005 -> 08:35 PM) i can't take this announcing crew right now...they are all over boston, its making me ill What specifically have they said about Boston that should be deemed as Bias?
  3. QUOTE(frahungski @ Oct 7, 2005 -> 08:28 PM) berman: "when you're hot you're hot" implying the white sox were somehow lucky on that play. It implied to me that when things are going well, they continue that way....... which is a perfectly fitting description of that play. The Sox put on the shift even with a runner on and a line drive that would likely have gone right up the middle lands nicely in the 3B's hands.
  4. They should string up whoever did this and beat the crap out of them...... This may be funny to some, but for anyone who has ever worked at or been part of any type of athletic venue, I can tell you that someone's idea of a joke is causing groundskeepers to work many more hours than normal. It takes a huge amount of time, dedication and effort just to keep up a quality athletic field and then they have to deal with this? Think of it as someone walking into your office or dorm room and pissing all over your desk and your laptop. Don't forget there were papers on the desk that are from a project you had worked tirelessly to prepare for something that mattered a lot to you. I'm surprised they aren't resodding to be honest with you.
  5. QUOTE(Mercy! @ Oct 7, 2005 -> 04:13 AM) Alright, now, there we go again. My turn to be caught in the “too many Rex’s around here” morass. I thought that Mr. Kickass was simply ignoring my question about his fetish, er, interest in strong, attractive older women. But I see that you are not he, so there is still hope that this matter will be clarified. Or not. Gotta be careful not to mix us up. If it helps, just think of me as the angel of the two Rex's. ;-)
  6. Personally, I have always thought anyone wanting to bear a child should have to pass an idiot test (yes that includes men since they involved). I just haven't been able to figure out the logistics of making it realistic. But this is taking things just a bit too far!
  7. As a matter of fact there is..... He had surgery and all went well. He should be discharged from the hospital Thursday or Friday. Recovery time is expected to be 6-12 months and he should be able to play again. Below is an article from today's Birmingham News. Surgeon: Prothro should play again
  8. QUOTE(fathom @ Oct 4, 2005 -> 09:44 PM) I have a very good "source" at BA, and their biggest concern with Jenks is his "make-up". They don't feel like he'll be able to pitch more than 3 or 4 years in the majors with his current physique and mentality. They love his stuff, but don't project him as having it for a very long time. They do love Chris Young though. I find that funny to en extent. Take this constructive criticism back to your source at BA. One of BA's shortcomings is that they almost refuse to give up on a player. It seems once they have made a decision on a player, that opinion sticks until they have no choice to back off of it. I see a similarity in this case. Coming into this season those were the two knocks on Jenks. I can see that "mental makeup" is still somewhat of a concern unitl he proves otherwise for more than one season. But if they did some homework, they might realize that he has lost a ton of weight since the beginning of the season and that everyone around him this year raved about his dedication to turning things around. Of course there can always be a regression, but it just seems to me, that they seem to be slow to change information on a guy. A prime example is when a player is reported to throw mid-90's and then throws a whole season in the minors barely ever reaching 90, yet he still gets labeled a hard thrower. They just seem slow to change opinions on players. Not sure if it is a lack of homework and allowing reputation to precede facts, or what.

I have to say I am quite surprised, happily of course. Thought from the very beginning it would be much worse.

  11. Could be age, could just be that Owens wasn't a "prospect" coming into the season. It will be interesting to see the complete list when it comes out because there will be a lot of familiar names on it. The league was pretty well loaded this year.
  12. I really figured Haigwood for one of the two leagues he played in. I thought the Carolina League was more likely, but him missing isn't a shocker. Had he thrown as well as he did for a whole season in one of the leagues, he may have made the list. Sweeney, Rogo and Tracey not making it do not surprise me. Owens being left off does a little bit. It just goes to show you that prospect lists are different. Owens makes the league post-season all-star team and Young does not. Yet Owens can't sniff the Top 20.
  13. Damn, too many Rex's. When I first read this I thought I was back on Mercy's bad side..... assuming I ever got out of the doghouse.
  14. QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ Oct 3, 2005 -> 04:04 AM) Actually Rex, alot of towns HAVE determined what is a bar and what is a restaurant. I know that Bloomingdale will not allow a BAR to open, but a restaurant if free to apply for a booze license. While I don't know what the specifics are, I do know that thay have a definition for what is a bar, and what is not. In this regard, I guarantee you it would be completely politicized and end up being decided by who had more money and a stronger lobby.
  15. QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Oct 2, 2005 -> 02:35 PM) I don't like governments requiring an establishment to be non-smoking. If the employees are really concerned, they should insist to their owners to make the place non-smoking. If you don't like smoking in restaurants, go to smoke free restaurants. It's pretty simple really. But stop making businesses cut out what they don't want to cut out because some people who work in a government office think its wrong. Here's a question: why is it ok to prohibit smoking in a bar because of the long term health effects of cancer, but it isn't ok to prohibit drinking in a bar because of the short term health effects of drunk driving? I really hope that you answered that question yourself not long after posting it. Read it again and think a bit and you will understand there is no logic there. In case it isn't so obvious: 1. Not everyone drinks in a bar 2. Not everyone drinks to excess in a bar 3. Not everyone drives after drinking to excess Drinking and driving IS regulated. Drinking to excess IS regualted. Both are instances where drinking can affect others around them. Drinking a beer or a glass of wine is not because it shouldn't be. The bottom line is that public health policies have existed ever since government has. We many not agree with every one of them, but at some point it IS goverment's job to regulate the health of its citizens when others are affected. That is not even taking into account the reality of the cost to local/state/federal governments from smoking. Think about it. People will crow about governments banning smoking. They will also crow about public healthcare and the concept of a hospital turning down sick patients that do not have insurance. Yet no one seems to care if those doing the smoking have health insurance or not. The bill has to be paid somewhere so it is indeed a public health policy manner.
  16. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Sep 30, 2005 -> 08:10 PM) Im happy its going to be banned from restaurants and bowling alleys because those are family places and we shouldnt have to deal with the smoking. I dont see while it has to be banned from bars but I guess since I dont smoke its all good for me. That is a legit question, but one with an easy answer. Tell me what is a bar and what is a restaurant? It is not easy to differentiate between the two in many cases. Does the neighborhood bar which also does a good portion of its business in food sales escape the ban while a corporate restaurant (which also has a bar area) has to comply? To classify as a bar would a business have to stop serving food? There are way too many cases where bar and restaurant is one and the same. To try and come up with a regulated definition of a bar vs. a restaurant would be a nightmare and impossible. The concept here is that if all places are affected equally, then the effects should be spread across the board. Of course, some would be more affected than others, but that happens any time public policy is implemented. We as a society adapt.
  17. Josh, you defended Michigan fairly. You went out on a limb basically calling everyone that assumed Michigan's demise nuts. I felt all of that was over the top as well, but beyond my promise that Michigan would not lose to Iowa, I didn't stick my neck out like you did. Enjoy the rest of what will turn out to be a typical Wolverines season - lose early, play well the rest of the year after national title hopes are gone. The game I found interesting was Penn St.-Minnesota. I can see Minny having a bit of a letdown after the huge win over Purdue last weekend, but I never thought Penn State could handle them that bad. I guess back to back games against Ohio State and Michigan will really tell us how far they have come. With Alabama and Penn St. both having big wins Saturday, it makes you wonder if there aren't some ghosts of college football traditions past pulling some strings this year. Lastly, how big will the game in South Bend be in two weeks?? Charlie Weis becomes an instant hero/legend if he can find a way to pull that one off.
  18. Has anyone noticed that Notre Dame is 4-1? Anyone notice that all four of those wins were on the road? If they can figure out how to win at home they will be dangerous. Their next five games are all at home.
  19. QUOTE(farmteam @ Sep 29, 2005 -> 03:51 AM) High A is considered lower level. AA is middle to upper, and AAA is upper. At least that's how I've always interpreted it. Depends on how you look at it. The Sox have six Minor League affiliates. The top 3 are AAA, AA and High A. Pretty easy to look at that as upper if you simply split the six teams in half.
  20. I am familiar with Miller, Sowers and Head from the Kinston team. All are legit prospects. Don't know anything about the other two.
  21. QUOTE(The Bones @ Sep 28, 2005 -> 06:45 AM) I'm not so much upset that every team in the conference doesn't play each other, but I'm more bothered the fact that the schedules are unfair to some teams as a result. For example, Wisconsin doesn't have to play Ohio State or Michigan State. However, Minnesota doesn't have to play Illinois or Northwestern. That is a big difference in schedule strength. Or what if Michigan State/Ohio State and Wisconsin go undefeated in the Big Ten? I doubt it will happen but how could you determine a true Big Ten Champion? You can't without having the 2 teams play each other. But the problem is the same even with 12 teams and a championship game. One of the teams in the championship game can easily be there because their schedule was easier. FWIW, the schedules are never fair, but they are done on a rotation system and it is known a few years ahead of time how they will go. So there is some randomness/luck to it, since some teams do peak and valley in the standings.
  22. QUOTE(The Bones @ Sep 28, 2005 -> 03:43 AM) Going to 12 teams would allow them to split into 2 separate divisions and add a championship game to determine a true champion. My dream scenario would be if Notre Dame joined. Big Ten East: Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue Big Ten West: Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Wisconsin It won't happen but it would be a lot better than the system they have right now. All of that is true, but it would still mean that not all teams play each other every year, which is what the previous poster seemed to be indication his distaste for.
  23. QUOTE(The Bones @ Sep 27, 2005 -> 03:26 AM) I just wish the Big Ten would add another team so we wouldn't have to deal with this bulls*** of not playing two teams every year. Oh, and OSU is the best team in the Big Ten, just ahead of MSU. That is all. ??? If they went to 12 teams, then there would be three teams they don't play each year instead of two. How would this help?? And Jason, Michigan will NOT lose to Iowa. Book it!
