Hummel probably the PTBNL
Could be Sanders, Ginter, Rauch or even Munoz. I just don't think they will load up on extra guys while they are in a pennant race.

Why did Dan Wright get a Save last night?..
His discretion is if he felt the pitcher pitched effectively. Why would he take away a stat from a guy who earned it according to the rules? The save rule has been the same since it was originated. Pitchers get a few cheap saves like this every year. You just now waking up and catching this? There is no doubt that the save rule can be somewhat deceptive. I get your point, but this doesn't happen often enough for me to go on a "change the save rule" campaign.

Why did Dan Wright get a Save last night?..
Because the rules doesn't exclude blowouts. I agree that it seems dumb, but the rules allow for it, so the pitcher deserves it if he does his job.

Why did Dan Wright get a Save last night?..
Straight out of the Official Baseball Rules......... SAVES FOR RELIEF PITCHERS 10.20 Credit a pitcher with a save when he meets all three of the following conditions: (1) He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his club; and (2) He is not the winning pitcher; and (3) He qualifies under one of the following conditions: (a) He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning; or (B) He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, or at bat, or on deck (that is, the potential tying run is either already on base or is one of the first two batsmen he faces); or © He pitches effectively for at least three innings. No more than one save may be credited in each game.

Hey Rex. U seem pretty knowledgable on the Sox farm system. Do u get baseball america or baseball prospectus? Do u get your info from the net? Do u actually watch gms on tv? Help a brotha out.... Jordan, my baseball knowledge comes from many sources. To begin with, I have played (college), coached, and umpired (all at the amateur level) for many years, so I have seen many great players and have been around the game all my life. I have friends that have played in the Major Leagues and many that played in the Minors that never made it, so I have a pretty decent idea of what it is like from the players perspective. I know a handful of college coaches and talk baseball with them semi-regularly. I do follow Baseball America regularly, but the main way I learn about the Sox players is by watching games. I watch probably 70% of the Barons home games so I get to see these guys up close. I have also gotten to know several of the scouts that regularly cover the Southern League, so I talk to them as well. At a Minor League game they are very accessible and always sit at the same place. I know some guys that work for the Barons as well. Being around the park a lot, you can learn a lot about what is going on, who is coming and who is going. You get chances to see young guys as they arrive at this level. Watching Minor League baseball is much more intimate than the Major Leagues. In most instances, the worst seats in a Minor League stadium are the same as the best seats that most are able to get at a Major League game. Players are accessible. You can talk to them, get to know them a little bit. After watching for several years, you get a better feel for who is a real prospect and who is a pretender. Sometimes you are wrong, but I guarantee you I am more accurate than I would have been 10 years ago. Watching them play you can see how hard they play. Some guys dog it half the time and could be so much better if they busted their ass. Hope I didn't ramble too long.

If Reed started the year in AA then he would definitely be in AAA by now. He has only spent a half season in AA at this point. I do think there is some validity to leaving him in Birmingham to help out with the pennant race (take him out of the Barons lineup and they are cooked), but I think it is also just natural development. The Hoover Met where the Barons play is a pitcher's park. Not many HR's are hit there (note only 1 of Reed's 7 w/ Birm.) so hitters are challenged to use all fields and hit the ball in the gaps. Reed does this very well. Charlotte from what I have heard, is a smaller park and guys can tend to fall in love with trying to hit HR's there, which can retard development. Also, remember that he started off so hot and hitting around .500 for a long time, then he cooled off down to around .390. He dropped pretty quickly, so you might say he was in a slump of sorts. He has gotten hot since and is back over .400, but it is so close to the end of the season, there is not much good to come from a change of scenery now. So, rather than sending him to AAA for a month, it is just as good for him to stay in Birmingham.

Why did Dan Wright get a Save last night?..
A save can be earned by pitching effectively for three innings.

Wanna bet he doesn't get it?

What was the purpose of promoting him to AAA? He is not going to the Big Leagues this year anyway. All he would be doing is taking someone else's spot in AAA and causing other players to move up faster than they might be ready.

And no, Bmr, I am not suggesting he will hit .400 in the Majors.

You draft the best player available without regard to specific position. There are some solid middle infielders in the low minors so 2 years from now, it is impossible to tell what the system will look like. Everyone wants to give up on Andy Gonzalex, but I think it is premature to do that. Pedro Lopez has been solid at Kannapolis and is a slick fielder. Ruddy Yan is likely only two years away. Robert Valido is a highly regarded SS and is showing that he can hit. Also fair to mention is Aaron Miles, who if he doesn't leave via free agency, could be a 1-2 year stopgap at 2B.

I didn't read it. This was the first I heard of it. Gotta keep up Cali...... Life might just pass you by. LOL

Hummel probably the PTBNL
If he doesn't clear waivers, then the Sox woudl likely have to substitute another player, not on their 40-man roster We discussed this at length on Friday. Why the new thread? Someone not paying attention?? LOL

Paniagua?
There's a week left in the Charlotte season. Not enough time to evaluate this bum. If Loiasa stunk up the joint in spring training this year, he would be selling used cars. Pantiagua couldn't impress Tampa THIS spring, and was horrible in Detroit, when the fences were 4000 ft. from homeplate. I don't know why everyone is so fascinated with a guy who was last effective in 2000, and even then not that great. Sirotka was good in 2000, why don't the Sox go after him? St. Louis is so desparate for pitching the trade for Sterling Hitchcock, why don't they go after this guy? The fact that Paniagua hasn't signed yet indicates to me common sense has prevailed with White Sox management. Ginter, and Adkins are both better options than this guy I don't think anyone was fascinated with him. I just think that most thought it would be a good idea to take a look at the guy in a no lose situation. Why such hatred for a guy that was being discussed as possibly signing a minor league contract?

Hey Bullard
Not all. You get a pleasure out of watching young guys grow up, get better and get promoted. It is part of Minor League baseball.
-
Props to Rex
Thanks Jim..... I enjoy watching guys as they come up. Some make it, others don't. The fun part is guessing which ones are which, hype aside. Atlanta is the closest MLB park to Birmingham and I go there a couple of times a year, but I have grown to enjoy those games less and less each year, while the opposite is true for Minor League games. Keep up the good work and get the Barons into the playoffs. You are in a perfect role to position yourself for the future and I must give you props on recognizing that yourself.

Thanks, UNS............. I think? LOL

The yankee series
I think Buehrle goes in the last game against the Yanks and Garland starts the series, then Cottsy gets plugged in game two. That will keep all of your starters (except Neal) on four days rest. Don't be surprised to see Neal work an inning out of the bullpen in 3 or 4 days, if the rotation is changed that way.
-
Breaking News: Sox acquire Scott Sullivan
If the reports about Hummel are true, he has to clear waivers since he was on the 40-man, which means it will likely be Monday or Tuesday before that happens.
-
Congrats Cottsy
You just contradicted yourself Heather. Buehrle will go tonight against the Rangers. Garland will follow tomorrow. Monday is an off day. Loaiza and Colon will start the Yankess series on Tuesday and Wednesday. With the off day on Monday, Buehrle should come back on Thursday and probably Garland on Friday. Then Cotts would slip back into the rotation on Saturday. That would keep your first 4 starters all on their regular 4 days rest.

Props to Rex
You and everyone else. I remember him being the man in a few fantasy drafts. Its too bad he never reached his potential. He was a freakin stud in this league........ overshadowed Tejada... I have a ball signed by both Grieve and Tejada....... I wanted two separate balls, but when i got the one, I was disappointed Tejada was on the same ball as Grieve...... What an idiot I turned out to be. LOL Speaking of Tejada, what the hell happened to him? He was supposed to be the 2nd best SS in baseball. Just a tough year, esp. BA wise...... I'd look for him to be right back near the top next year.
