QUOTE (spiderman @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 04:45 AM) If he's coming cheaper than we first thought, yet the White Sox still can't get him, what does that say about our minor league system? Street scares me some - I've heard a lot of the baseball "experts" speak on him, and most aren't really convinced with the questions on him. i honestly just hate the way the kid pitches. Nibbles the entire time, gives up runs in bunches at times.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Jul 31, 2008 -> 04:02 AM) I'd love to get this guy depending on the cost. If the Marlins would take a couple of former first round pitching prospects (Broadway and McCulloch) I'd do it in a heartbeat because I think Broadway's ceiling is a no.4/5 guy and we already have enough of those guys while McCulloch isn't very good at all. But I don't know if I'd want to go any higher than that, maybe add in a solid RP prospect. I guess it would all depend on what Kenny's people think of him, if they think he's going to contribute in a huge way at the MLB I'd give up anything in the minors sans Fields, but I agree that he needs a real shot. He's always had monster power. I don't think he's the next Quentin (Quentin is capable of hitting .320/40/160 one of these years), but he could be the next Troy Glaus and that would certainly be a welcome addition for the next few years. That said, I don't think you could pry Konerko out of this lineup with a crowbar. Lets say we trade Josh Fields for something today, McPherson could be a 3B replacement, even next season.

QUOTE (JFields27 @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 11:22 PM) He Rakes and K's ... its that simple, for just the thought why not throw it out there, but yeah. I am thinking you could see him called up if Manny is traded to the Marlins. I wonder if alot of team have inquired on him. He has to have some value with those numbers and could be a 3B or a 1B who hits for power, and apparently is getting on base decently enough.

I would think the bat was cool, but then useless. Give them something they use in every day life, like a money clip, or something with golf if they are golfers.

QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 11:17 PM) He did terrible in the majors which is why he's back in the minors. He's played 116 career games in the majors. Carlos Quentin had played 138 games before he was traded to the White Sox this season. Good sample size?

I want nothing to do with street.

We have an obvious hole at first base. I was just reading the game thread and someone brought up a great name. What is McPherson still doing in the minors, and is he obtainable via trade? He can play 1B and 3B in the majors. His stats in AAA: .298 .406 .690 1.096 38 hr 82 RBI in 98 games

Masset+whatever they want for Young.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 03:15 PM) Richard's slider is just horrible. I couldn't believe Toby kept calling for it in the 5th last night, especially with Spann up in a big spot. Yeah, that pitch was awful. I thought his change was basically the only other pitch that was decent.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 11:59 AM) I don't care what Scott Skiles says - Ben Gordon is a horses*** defender. He can say what he wants, but I see the same games he does. Gordon is an elite shooter and the only current Bull that's good to drop 35 on any given night but that's literally all he's good for. You have to get him the ball on every other possession with an open shot because he can't create for himself, and you can't rely on him to get the ball to anybody else either. It's like all he does is wait for the ball. Hughes can drop 35 on a team any given night, and will actually play very good defense. Gordon is gone, and for good reason.

QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 10:04 AM) I was really impressed by Richard last night. He was twinkie'd to death but over-all I think his mound presence, control and quickness of work were impressive. Am I stupid for thinking he has more value than Poreda? Richard was a dual sport athlete until recently and while he is no Jeff Samardjia (sp?) I really liked what I saw in him. Both are probably future pen arms, I didnt think Richard's secondary stuff was enough to get mlb hitters out consistently. Poreda however throws that same sinker from a better arm angle and about 5-7 mph harder.

And Swish's old girlfriend for good measure.

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jul 30, 2008 -> 03:35 PM) This actually makes the Tigers better. Disagree entirely. "Pudge" is hitting .295 .338 and is still a defensive strength behind the plate. The Tigers pitching staff didnt have to worry much about sb's and he was a very calming veteran presence for that staff. They have now subtracted that and added Farnsworth who is basicaly a mid 4 ERA pen guy with no real value.

You dont deal Floyd unless there is a stud SP coming back. You can however deal Fields for someone like Roberts IMO.

QUOTE (beck72 @ Jul 26, 2008 -> 01:31 PM) Seeing how Beckham won't be ready for a few years, he would likely come up through the minors as a SS. At he could be moved to 3b for a 1/2 a minor league season if Alexei was tearing it up at SS He'll prob sniff the team in sept net year, or will be up the year after that. Alot of scouts believe he can play a major league SS, so im guessing he stays in that spot for the next 2 seasons.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 29, 2008 -> 11:31 PM) If we're going to talk about Paulie every single moment, at least respond to Oz's comments in this article http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/wh...soxnt30.article Part One: "I've got to talk to him first,'' Guillen said of telling Konerko he may sit him. ''I'm not going to make a move without telling him what's on my mind. My question is, if I bench Paulie, who's on first?'' When the response was ''Swisher,'' Guillen said, ''And? [swisher's] .226 vs. [Konerko's] .213.'' Part Two: "Guillen was pushed on the issue of whether the team is better when Swisher is at first base and the platoon of Brian Anderson and Dewayne Wise is in center field. After all, when Konerko went on the disabled list in mid-June, the Sox went 13-7 without him. ''People say, 'Put Konerko on the bench, do this with Konerko, do that with Konerko,''' Guillen said. ''Who's going to play first? Swisher? Oh. Do me a favor, check the book first and check Swisher and Konerko's averages, and it's not that much different. ''But in the meanwhile, who do I got in center field, Brian? Hello. Wise? That's why people think it's easy to say, 'Make out the lineup, here's what it is.' I think P.K. needs rest, mentally. If we bench him for a while, just to give him rest, out of the game, just put stuff back together and take extra hitting and stick with one thing, that's the only way we're going to bench him.'' OZ is of the opinion Swish's offensive production hasn't been much better than Paulie's ... walks be damned. At least comment on Ozzie's comments. I think they make perfect sense. When did you become Dick Allen lite? At least he is literate and can read a thread title. Maybe you should.

QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Jul 29, 2008 -> 08:40 PM) From the one angle CSN showed it almost appeared as if Dye whiffed on the ball. I'd have to see it again. He's a terrible fielder whether or not he had a chance on this play. Can't move worth a s***. That ball was smoked, JD got a tremendous jump and made a nice turn and almost got it. There arent and LF'ers in the game that could of gotten that outside of Ichiro maybe. He killed it.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 29, 2008 -> 08:37 PM) Richard needs more seasoning in the minors. He has great command on his fastball, but his slider is absolutely horrific. He doesnt have enough secondary stuff. Second and thirs time through the order, his fastball starts to look BP-like. He has a future in the pen, nothing more IMO.

Clayton Richard, future bullpen arm.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 29, 2008 -> 06:43 PM) But...that assumes a constant ballpark. Some of the balls he hit for doubles last year in Oakland would probably have left the Cell, so it's entirely possible the reason his HR total is similar is ballpark factor. I also think some of the doubles he hit last year are being caught in our smaller OF this season.

This was on June 2 and I thought was a pretty good article back then. Not sure how the stats are now.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jul 29, 2008 -> 05:15 PM) I'm not sure when he would've started juicing, even though high school isn't nearly out of the question. I'm just saying it seems like he's off of something since he's been on the White Sox. Coming to a hitter's paradise, from a pitcher's park where he put up great power numbers, and now seemingly having very little power is strange. Also, considering Oakland has had a lot of ties to steroids, and the White Sox have had somewhat of the opposite reputation, and he definitely looks like an ex-juicer to me. As it's already been said in this thread, the only hard hits he seems to have are his homers. The guy seems to have lost some power somewhere along the road from the coast to the Midwest. Well he's on pace to hit about the same amount of HR he hit last season, it just appears he isnt hitting as many doubles, which is a byproduct of his BABIP being lower. Basically the doubles he is hitting arent dropping for hits. This probably wouldnt have much to do with steroids, and more to do with the balls he is hitting being caught.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Jul 29, 2008 -> 04:42 PM) If .337 in his career is getting on base, I've got different expectations from major league first baseman. Kotchman's numbers last year were Scott Hatteberg-like. Huh? This is is second full season dude, what are you talking about. He has been getting on base his entire minor league career, and his first full season which was last year. Hatteberg had ONE season approach .900 OPS. Kotchman is a good young player. Kotchman last season (first full season) .296 .372 .840 Hatteberg career (13 years): .273 .361 .772 For s***s and giggles: Paul Konerko career: .277 .351 .838 What exactly is YOUR expectation from a major league first baseman?

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Jul 29, 2008 -> 04:28 PM) This has to make Anaheim the best team in baseball. If we meet up in the playoffs, they're going to be tough to beat. Thats what I thought a few years ago. Of course they could suit up 15 junior high players and will still give us a tough contest.
