Backe lacks concentration. He has a good slider and good command, but sometimes just rolls pitches up there hoping for strikes.

QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 12:44 PM) I'm gonna miss living there this upcoming school year. so many great places to eat over there.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 12:30 PM) In other words, they made it bigger so they could benefit off of it with higher prices because you are IN THE LOOP. Its the same reason people say they live in the WEST LOOP or SOUTH LOOP. They can make up whatever they want, it doesn't make it right. The loop by the very definition is the loop of the CTA. Anything else is just grandstanding. BTW, people say they live in thos areas because thats what they are called, in fact the West Loop is actually called West Loop Gate, and is defined by the city, Alderman, and a community organization.

Its the same reason people say they live in the WEST LOOP or SOUTH LOOP. They can make up whatever they want, it doesn't make it right. The loop by the very definition is the loop of the CTA. Anything else is just grandstanding. Yes, in the 1920's they forsaw housing markets way into the future. Also there is virtually zero residential housing in that area comparative to other areas in the city, and still the prices arent nearly as high as those in the gold coast, lincoln park, old town, river north, wrigleyville and so on. So im not sure what prices you are talking about. People say they live in Chicago for those reasons, but living the West Loop or South Loop just means you live closer to the business district and have an easier commute, no special connotation applies comparative to other parts of the city. The initial definition of the loop was defined by the El tracks, but was changed in the 1920's to include the central business district, which has since then been considered part of THE LOOP. So saying the Sears Tower, the Merc, even the Opera House are in the Loop is considered correct by the City of chicago since they redefined the boundaries almost 90 years ago.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 12:11 PM) University of Chicago= Official? how so? The U of C provided definition to the City. If you would like a map for clarification, here is one off of the OFFICIAL City's website which shows area 32 being the Loop, which is of course the area that was defined by the University of Chicago in the 1920's http://egov.cityofchicago.org/webportal/CO...ommarea_num.pdf

Well, the old definition is what you gave, I gave the official city definition of what the Loop is.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 11:29 AM) To be 100% honest, I know he's not much at the plate, but after watching the last handful of games with Uribe at 3B, I'll gladly take him. Our problem has not been offense lately, and Uribe does the best to help our pitchers. Both of those guys I mentioned play good defense. Sanchez actually has good numbers as a lead off hitter as well.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 11:49 AM) http://www.chicagohome.com/NHDetails.cfm?NH_ID=27 This lists the boundaries as 45E (Wabash), 300S (Jackson I think, without looking at a map), 200 W (Wells) and 200N (Lake). (I didn't notice until after I typed this that the site has the street names right next to it, lol). Technically the Sears Tower, Michigan Avenue, and Grant Park are not a part of the Loop proper. It's all semantics really and it depends on who you ask and how they define it. If you define it as the literal area where it got its name from, then it's the definition I gave which is a tiny area. If you define it colloquially as the heart of downtown, to include Grant Park, then it's everything inside the river and the lake which would be more or less the whole skyline. The University of Chicago made the definition of the loop to be the boundaries of the chicago river to the north and west in 1920.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 10:32 AM) Beanie is unreal. As for Ohio State, I would be shocked if they don't go undefeated at home. Their season will come down to the games at USC, Wisconsin, and Illinois, because they would have to really lay an egg to lose any of their other 9 games. I don't think there is anyway they go to the national championship game unless they go undefeated though, because the people in power will do everything they can to keep Ohio State out of the title game after what happened the last two years. They know thats what they have to do. Of course I dont know what was so bad about last year's game, they DID have more yards than LSU in the game, its not like it was a blowout, which SEC fans would love to make you believe. -
QUOTE (DBAH0 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 11:24 AM) Yeah, basically you can find a player out there in FA such as a Dye who didn't put up great numbers in Oakland for health and ballpark reasons, who when they come to the Sox will have an increase in their offensive numbers. One of the best signings KW's ever made really. Over the course of his contract, I think that signing will prove better than Paul Konerko's extension.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 11:19 AM) Who did we replace Carlos Lee and Magglio Ordonez with in 2005? Jermaine Dye for Maggs.

QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 10:10 AM) Here's a funny idea. Three-way secret trade. Tampa sends a 3rd rounder to GB, then secretly sends him to Minnesota for a 2nd rounder. TRADE HIM TO THE BEARS PLEASE!!!!

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 09:47 AM) I admit I did chuckle at the "they'll be better conditioned than everybody else" part of the post. Reminds of Charlie Weis's ill fated "you will have a tactical advantage every game" comment when he got to Notre Dame. As for Joe McKnight, I am skeptical of him. I was awfully impressed by USC last year in the Rose Bowl, but as for McKnight, his best play was a byproduct of total luck on that bouncing lateral, and he was run down by Vontae Davis after he had about a 10 yard head start on him. He's certainly no Reggie Bush in terms of speed, that's for sure. im just not as high on little animal as other OSU fans are. Beanie worked out twice a day every day this summer, in his practice pictures he looks stronger than last season. I would NOT like to be a DB trying to tackle him in the open field, if I could catch him. -
Who do you dislike as a sports fan?

Joba. ESPN keeps giving me updates on every ache and pain he has. I havent seen a Tim Hudson update. -
There has GOT to be a 3B floating through the wire somewhere. Sanchez from Pitt is having a down year and can play 3B, Tejada? Someone?

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 09:50 AM) By random attack I mean that he doesnt know the guy. Of course he picked out a victim on the bus who was least likely to fight back. Right, but choosing a random victim was not random is what im saying. The guy probably got on the bus thinking that he was going to attack a stranger, then he picked out the stranger. Even though the victim was a stranger, it was not totally a random act of violence. He knew he was going to do something, it was pre-meditated. Proof yet again that riding a grayhound is dangerous. Did anyone see the footnote that Grayhound is furiously trying to erase all proof of their ad campaign:

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 09:23 AM) Thats the first and only thing that gets me about this whole sick situation. It was a total random attack, and its scary to think that someone on a plane, bus, train, standing next to you in line at mcdonalds, etc. could just unload on you unsuspectingly. And to think that this one guy with a knife was able to hold off 37 others by fear alone, its just scary to think about Well, if you read the story, it appeared he picked out his victim, because he switched seats to sit by the kid. Also the kid appeared to be of slight build, which could have been one of the reasons he was chosen, because the killed probably wanted to attack someone who 1. Wouldnt put up a fight and 2. would be easy to slice and dice.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 5, 2008 -> 05:26 PM) The West Loop and South Loop are the West Loop and the South Loop, those are different areas. The most specific, literal definition is the area the L tracks go around. And no, the Sears Tower is technically not in the Loop either. If you define the "loop" as the general downtown area, then yeah, that's a much wider area. The "Loop" has been defined as the central business district since 1920, which is everything inside of the river boundries, so yes, it is in the loop. Pre-1920 it would have not been. The "West Loop" is the business district just past the river to the highway, and beyond that to Ashland, which is a residential area, is called the west loop gate.

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Aug 5, 2008 -> 02:01 AM) I really don't care either way who wins the USC-OSU game, but I do know it's gonna be a hell of a game to watch. Can't wait for it. I do think it will be a lot closer than most people believe. Oh, and I don't think you'll see a SEC team in the National Championship. Not b/c they don't have a good enough team, but rather b/c they have too many really good teams. I think it will be near impossible for 1 team to go through its entire SEC schedule without losing. But, the best team in the country this season will be a SEC school. There will be an SEC team there, the media loves to talka about how the SEC is better than the NFL, and the polls will reflect that. -

QUOTE (Rex Hudler @ Aug 1, 2008 -> 08:50 PM) Michigan will be better than 5-7, guaranteed. 7-5 is more like it. They'll be interesting to watch on offense, but they'll be in every game. They'll also be better conditioned than ever (and every other team) in the 4th quarter. Every other team huh? I guess Dick Rod came in and invented the best conditioning program ever!!!!!!!!! Nobody has EVER seen a program like this!!!!!! Write it in the papers and our fans will BELIEVE!!!! Come on, they are what they are. A rebuilding team, with a chance to upset some teams at one point or another during the season. -
QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 12:29 AM) The Cubs should be terrified of the Phillies, because if they can ever get their s*** together, they are the biggest challenge to the Cubs IMO. They play well on the road, have an offense than can slug with the Cubs, and have a good bullpen. In fact, I think a lot of the same things can be said about the Marlins, another team in that race (although their pen isn't as good as the Phillies). I don't think the Mets win that division. I will say this, the way the Cubs are built is to take leads early and play at home. I think in October, if you can keep it close into the 6th and 7th innings, and just try and steal a game at Wrigley, you can beat them for sure. The Cubs have alot of trouble beating the marlins as well.

I may be in the minority here, but I thought Gavin looked good last night, but was the victim of some ridiculous hits and bad defense. I honestly dont think I've seen Polanco hit a HR since he has played for the Tigers. Granderson's shot was a hell of a swing, but the extra RBI was on Renteria throwing the bat into the field. The 5th run was an error on Griff that they called a triple. Gavin looked to be on at times, especially with his change and curve, but it was just one of those games where you wear it no matter how good your stuff is.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 5, 2008 -> 01:44 PM) Yeah the loop is actually a very small area, very specifically defined by the area the L trains go around. If you're outside that, you're not in the loop... not even the area east of Wabash to the lakefront which is still in the heart of downtown. Not true at all. The "West Loop" stretches all the way to Ashland. The "South Loop" stretches deep almost to the Stevenson. The El trains only go to Wells on the west side which means the Sears tower wouldnt be in the Loop according to your calculations.
