  1. Who exactly are you responding to? You quote me but argue points that I never stated. What chart exactly? What do owens and fields have to do with konerko? What does jermaine dye have to do with this discussion? Are you saying he had a down year last year followed by a good one this year? Not sure how that compares to konerko at all. Maybe if dye was hitting barely above the mendoza line you would have a valid point. I'm still searching for the post where I said swish had a huge year..... Did he have a better year than Konerko, yes, is he entering his prime, yes, that's pretty much all anyone has said. If you want to make a point in this discussion, please enlighten us to how konerko's numbers do not suggest regression, that can be your starting point.
  2. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 18, 2008 -> 09:41 AM) Hasn't Swisher's numbers been trending down? Konerko is 32. He has plenty of time left. He can't run. He can do everything else. He's been injured. Almost the entire team trended down last year. He's a couple of years younger than Cabrera. So he's been in a 2 year slump? Come on. We all want Paulie to succeed, but it obvious at this point his production has seen its peak. And once again, Swish is about to enter his prime, we havent even seen his peak yet.
  3. Its also going to be hard for you to base your entire argument on the fact that Konerko was hurt the first half of this year considering his numbers were trending downward already last season as well.
  4. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 18, 2008 -> 09:28 AM) And Owens, Fields and Richar are only going to get better. Yes, those minor leaguers should probably get better, though Owens is not exactly a spring chicken. Im sure some 12 year old at the little league field near you will get better as well. Of course if you want to stay on topic and talk about Nick Swisher and his production at the major league level you could probably contribute to the discussion. Konerko has entered a point in his career where his skills are becoming diminished, its going to happen to every ballplayer out there. I suggest you get used to it now as it will happen many times over the course of your life.
  5. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 18, 2008 -> 09:05 AM) Why can't you get it through your head that Konerko has been injured for most of the season. First with a hand problem and then the oblique? Have you looked at the back of his baseball card? Its pretty good. If Konerko is the garbage a lot of this board thinks he is, then so is Swisher. Instead of replacing garbage with garbage, why doesn't anyone have any better ideas? Konerko is on the downside of his career and the trend is he wont produce those numbers on the back of his baseball card, Swish is entering his prime and odds are he will improve on his career numbers. Swish is also superior defensively. Its not exactly rocket science why people prefer Swisher.
  6. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 16, 2008 -> 04:23 PM) There aren't a ton of hostels to choose from in Chicago...unless I'm mistaken. Ah, missed the Hostel part.
  7. QUOTE (kystevie @ Jul 13, 2008 -> 03:24 PM) First of all let me say I enjoy Sox Talks topics almost every day but rarely post wife and I are coming to Chicago this week, will be going to the UC for Joel Osteen on Fri 18th then to the Cell for the game on the 19th Can anyone tell me a nice motel such as Holiday Inn Express (or something that won't break the bank) that might be somewhere in between? Also i'd like to visit the Paradise Pup or the White Palace Diner Do they have good Itialian Beef and Polish? Any help from you all would be appreciated Thanks Well, if you are over in my area, White Palace is a diner and doesnt do Beef. BUt luckily you are very close to Taylor street where the Original Al's Beef is located. Its just west of Halsted on Taylor. As for cheap places to stay, priceline it because the prices fluctuate, especially during tourist season. The closest place to the UC is on Madison and its the Crowne PLaza, there are a few in the medical district on Ashland as well.
  8. QUOTE (DBAH0 @ Jul 16, 2008 -> 02:07 PM) At a Hostel on East Congress Parkway and Wabash. To be honest, I wouln't mind checking out the Chicago Nightlife while I'm here, but I'd look to do at least 1 Touristy thing (whether it's a boat tour or something). Ok, your hotel is located in decent walking distance of some stuff, but next time you should stay a little farther up north. So you are directly next to Grant park and could walk down the street and see Buckingham, the lake path and all that good stuff, you are also located right next to the Art institute which is pretty cool. If you want to walk, take state directly north and you will walk by the old Marshall Fields and the theater district (sorta) and tons of shopping. Continue north and you will hit the river and should be able to see the Wrigley building which marks the beginning of "tourist row" or Michigan ave. That is basically a collection of overpriced shopping destinations and several big box restaurants all over the area for about 10 blocks north and at least 5-6 west. If you want "touristy, busy nightlife" the best option is to walk up Rush st or State St toward division and you will see the Viagra triangle and LOTS of people out and about. This is the gold coast area and is pretty cool, though packed with people, and somewhat expensive. Heres the good news: Right off Walton and State is probably the best if not one of the best live music dives in the entire city. its called Underground Wonderbar http://www.undergroundwonderbar.com/. You can see live Jazz, Blues and Reggae here depending on what night it is. Its a true Gem and makes you feel like you are seeing the "real" Chicago. I would say a stop in for some outside drinks somewhere on Rush then later/late night drinks and music at UWB should do you pretty good for one night. Ill try to think of more places, I know alot up north and in my area, but those are some real gems. If you want some places in the near west to hit up, nothing gets better than Richards bar on Grand, which is next to Emmitts which was in both Oceans 11 and Backdraft. Richards is run by two old Cubs fans, but is one of the classic dive bars of Chicago. Unfortunately you probably wont be around for enough time to check out some of the better alcoves of the city like Wicker park, Uke Village and Lincoln Square (German Heaven). But if you make it to Wrigley, make sure you take a tour around that area just to see everything.
  9. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 16, 2008 -> 02:33 PM) Mark's my favorite baseball player of all time but he's just not a Hall of Fame pitcher. He's great but he's not an all time great. Nope he's not, and he wont get in. He may be a Sox legend at one point, but thats as far as it will go.

    Pizza

The best in Chicago is still Mrs T's in DG

    Pizza

Let me ask you people this. Anyone ever been to SF? (calling all you cali sox fans) In SF all they eat is this sourdough pizza, you can get some pretty good s*** near the piers. I wish they had that here, its AMAZING.
  12. Hands down best ribs in chicago is at a little place off north and sedgwick called Twin Anchors.
  13. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 15, 2008 -> 10:35 AM) Ugh. Don't bother. There are so many other neighborhoods in the city where you'd have as good a time, or better, and for a lot cheaper. Go to Rush Street, or the West Loop district, or Wicker Park, or any number of other cool areas of town. But if you must see Lincoln Park and go stare at the trixies, take the red line to Fullerton, and walk east. You're there. Fixed. There is no warehouse district.
  14. DB, Where are you staying, and do you really want to do all the "tourist" things or are you looking for a different experience?
  15. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 15, 2008 -> 03:06 PM) Jones has flashed signs of promise but never really broke through and it was more to do with a poor offensive line, offense, and injuries as opposed to a lack of talent. That sounds just like the Bears team he signed with.
  16. QUOTE (daa84 @ Jul 14, 2008 -> 04:56 PM) let this thread be exhibit number 1 as to why its important to invest in the draft and to have a fruitful minor league system....the cubs and brewers were able to make themselves better very easily, while we are gonna have a very difficult time getting anything of any type of substance done Cough* DLS, Gio for Swish; Carter for Quentin*Cough
  17. QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Jul 14, 2008 -> 03:49 PM) Duchscherer might just win the Cy Young and he'd be a great addition. You nailed it right there as why we wouldnt be able to get him.
  18. Seriously, on what planet does one of the worst farm systems in the league translate to us acquiring the ERA leader in the AL?
  19. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 14, 2008 -> 04:25 PM) My question is, WHY THE HELL DID OZZIE TAKE HIM OUT THEN? Outside of the bad clutch hitting and the terrible pitching of Logan, Contreras, and Russel, that was the worst part of the entire game yesterday. I was saying the same thing at home, I have no idea why he took him out. Masset is clearly the fill in guy if one of our starters goes down, he has been GREAT.
  20. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Jul 14, 2008 -> 04:13 PM) Hey, thats two questions and you said you only had one. In regards to the prospects, I think KW can swing it, Beane covets lots of prospects that others ignore, and recently he has been going after a lot of Sox prospects(Cunningham, Carter, Gonzalez, Sweeney), so who knows which prospects Beane is looking at and wants. In regards to taking Duchserer at his highest value, if he performs well does it matter? Those spects you mentioned were ones that everyone coveted. Beane would probably want our tops guys at least. Duch is leading the freakin AL in ERA and is a Cy Young Favorite. I dont think we have the bullets.
  21. Basically his forkball has been s*** this month, which hs killed him. When he floats it like he has been, its a nothing pitch that gets hit hard quite a bit. His other stuff looks the same as it was when he was good earlier, he just doesnt have his out pitch, and continues to go to it.
  22. So. Figured out a way to fix my current tv by resetting the memory which seems to be a temp fix listed on the internet as the "light engine" apparently is going bad. At least it gives me some time to find a good deal on a sammy or Sharp.
  23. QUOTE (Brian @ Jul 13, 2008 -> 12:14 PM) I thought a Buckeye fan would like the redish hue. Its not quite scarlet.
