QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 11, 2008 -> 08:21 AM) rest is a very overrated concept in baseball. These guys want to play, and play everyday. Do they get tired? Sure. But to put them on a routine of sitting 1-2 times a week is stupid, IMO. They'll need a day off, but these are professional athletes. If they can't handle playing at least 150-155 games, then they shouldn't be getting paid millions of dollars. It is with position players. Luckily Ozzie has given our bullpen one of the lightest loads in baseball, which should pay off nearing the end of the season.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 10, 2008 -> 07:44 PM) This is Detroit's best chance to get momentum going for their season. One win would be huge for the Sox. Jesus, I really didnt expect the attitudes on this board to turn after a game where they clearly could of won, and still pounded out hits.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 10, 2008 -> 04:32 PM) Shields threw a hell of a haymaker and Crisp dodged it. Or atleast I seem to recall Shields throwing one. Yup, he threw first, and he should thank Coco for dodging it, because the way he threw it was going to break his wrist.

QUOTE (daa84 @ Jun 10, 2008 -> 07:40 PM) between the bunt, the 2 caught stealings, the throw out at home thats 4 outs given away add to it the 1 run contreras gave up pitching in the 7th when he had no business doing so, and the 2 driven in by cabrera when we had no business pitching to him, and the dropped play at the plate by AJ (which was a tough play, but one that needs to be made)...i hope they learn quick verlander scares me tomorrow...that game has gem written all over it Trying to get things going is not always a negative thing. It happens. And I dont know why you think Verlander will throw a gem, we just got double digit hits AGAIN.

QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Jun 10, 2008 -> 07:37 PM) Game Ova....too bad we gave this one away... but s*** happens! Got to take the next two. Good offensive showing, Detroit made every throw and every pitch right before we put it together. They should feel lucky to have pulled this one out, and thank whoever invented maple bats. We will get the next two.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 10, 2008 -> 02:55 PM) You know, I've always wondered how MLB catchers felt about getting shaken off. I notice that some pitchers do it sometimes and the catchers don't seem to care (Vazquez), and other pitchers just take the sign and deal (Buehrle comes to mind). Sometimes its a good thing, because all people have patterns and tendencies and sometimes the pitchers can stop the pattern of a catcher like AJP. AJ sometimes falls in love with the fastball inside corner for a strike out, Javy can shake him off and throw a change and the batter doesnt pick up on the pattern.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 10, 2008 -> 01:26 AM) ? Crisp was the one who came at Shields. Fights happen... I just wish the mlb didn't make such a big deal about them though with warnings, suspensions, etc...Coco was punched in the top of the head and had his face scratched. Pretty girly move by those guys.

Bulls to hire Vinny Del Negro as coach

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jun 9, 2008 -> 11:28 PM) So Pax promises a "name that will resonate with the fans" and we end up with some guy that has never coached anything at any level. Pax is such an awful GM, he'll probably trade the draft pick for Carmelo or something now. Ugh. Maybe he meant a name that is fun to say? I was hoping for Fat Lever.... -
QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Jun 9, 2008 -> 08:42 PM) Actually, Cleveland would probably want Gallagher, and if the Cubs wouldn't give that up for Roberts, I don't see them giving him up for Sabathia. Sabathia better net more than just Gallagher. You gotta look at what the Twins got for Johan, and increase it since he will be in HIGH demand. There are a few teams in the league that could make really good pitches for him.

Mariotti hides behind his editors, as other ST writers slam him

I wouldnt list Joe Cowley in there as talented journalists with some of the things he's done. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 9, 2008 -> 06:45 PM) I agree on that point...Swish is more so a backup 1b than a left side of the infield guy to my eyes, but I think you get the idea. If we're looking to replace Juan with a left handed bat, then I want him to be able to play 3b, 2b, and SS, otherwise, I think the change will lose us more games than it wins us. So right now we have: 3B: Crede, Pablo, Uribe SS: OC, Alexei, Pablo 2B: Alexei, Pablo, Uribe Thats not bad, if you have an injury to one of them, you bring up Getz who can play all 3. I guess if we sent Uribe away, we would still be ok, but would need to ditch one of the pitchers in the pen for someone like Getz.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 9, 2008 -> 05:39 PM) Frankly though, I am not at all comfortable with Pablo being our only backup option on the infield. Think about it...pick up Lofton, your bench is Ozuna, Lofton, Anderson, Hall. What do you do when you have 2 infielders hurting for a game or two? Considering that in 05 we lost all 3 IF's for a day, losing 2 IF's for a couple days, especially with Crede's back, is something we just have to plan for. Comparatively, right now we actually have 2 backup OF's, since our 2nd baseman can also play CF. So if we were to lose 2 OF's for a day, or an OF and a 1b for a day, we're still not screwed and can still hope to win the game. JD becomes your 2nd backup SS if you lose Uribe. technically Swish is a backup IF'er as well but I get what you are saying. I just think having Pablo and juan is redundant, and juan adds only defensive value.

of course I didnt play swish on my fantasy team today, but I did play Danks and Q.....

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jun 9, 2008 -> 06:13 PM) IMO, there are two possibilities for that role. Lofton or Owens. Kenny Lofton would be a great bench guy for us right now instead of Juan.

QUOTE (Lemon_44 @ Jun 9, 2008 -> 05:51 PM) Another good thing Williams seems to take into account is that he gets guys that are pretty good in the clubhouse. He doesn't go after the talented jackholes like Jose Guillen or Milton Bradley. About the most controversial guys he's brought in are AJ and Everett but both those guys are more about hard nosed winning than being utter clowns like JG or MB.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 9, 2008 -> 05:04 PM) If you want to deal with that contract, by all means. For probably the best closer in baseball, yes.

Juan Uribe is worthless at this point, I'd like to replace him with a serious LH bat off the bench. Would love a base stealing threat as well.

QUOTE (scenario @ Jun 9, 2008 -> 01:12 PM) I listened to all of Poreda's starts last year on radio... he was in the high 90's alot of the time. One thing that really struck me is how effective he was at throwing his fastball inside on people's hands. He broke alot of bats. He has a power fastball with alot of sink and a slider. If he adds a nice cutter and change he could stay as a starter. The straight change from a fastball/sinkerballer like that would be very effective in the majors.

QUOTE (SoxFan101 @ Jun 9, 2008 -> 03:32 PM) I think some of you are under-rating the Cubs. Without our weak division we would be hovering around .500 so calling them out for playing weak teams isn't fair. That being said I do think we have a better ball club and even though he has had early season success its hard to be scared of Dempster. Check out some of the pitchers the NL teams run out day after day and get back to me.
-
QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jun 9, 2008 -> 04:24 PM) The Cubs don't scare me one bit. Outside of Zambrano, who we have hit before, their rotation isn't scary at all and they've benefited from playing s*** teams like Pittsburgh, Houston, Colorado, etc a trillion times. At home. Their second best starter is Ryan Dempster, even with his hot start probably wont finish with an ERA below 4. I wonder if the Twins would trade us Joe Nathan.....

QUOTE (soxfan3530 @ Jun 9, 2008 -> 02:34 PM) how close was that to being gone? and how good was the catch? standing at the wall. Had a TON of top spin on it otherwise it may have been gone. Almost put it out of reach. In other news, the bull offered the coaching position to Vinnie Del Negro?
