QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 15, 2013 -> 04:13 PM) With all the people on prescription meds for anxiety, depression ... is it OK to get completely drunk 2-3 times a week when you are full of those type of meds? Let's say you are on all sorts of anxiety stuff and high blood pressure medication and yet you drink like a fish. Could you just up and die one night? Yes. They dont interact well and although you may feel ok, your organs are working overtime and sometimes your heart can just stop. Age doesnt really stop you from having this issue. A guy I know died like this a few years ago.

QUOTE (farmteam @ Aug 15, 2013 -> 02:20 PM) Yeah, I laugh out loud every time I think of him backing up Major Applewhite. Then Texas was going to move Dunn to TE, and he said "No thanks, I'll play pro baseball." Good choice, Adam. Its hard to believe, but frankly what an athlete to be offered a full ride to Texas as a QB. -

QUOTE (farmteam @ Aug 15, 2013 -> 02:09 PM) Probably doesn't affect anyone on here (except maybe Felix), but Reid Travis is giving up football for his senior season to focus on basketball. I mainly pointed this out to say, "Can you imagine facing a 6'7" 235 lb QB in high school?" Jebus. Adam Dunn was a pretty large Qb back in the day. -
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 15, 2013 -> 01:23 PM) That plan may have been effective 10 years ago, but with how big and dependable StubHub has become, how many Blackhawks fans will really be deterred by this? This rule will just allow more Preds fans to profit, as opposed to out-of-towners and ticket brokers. Yeah its only through their site. Easy to get second hand tickets, especially before the game since they dont go to their own games.

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Aug 15, 2013 -> 09:56 AM) I really like Groce, but he still needs to prove he can close the deal on these guys. It's great being talked about with a lot of top recruits and being included in top threes or fives, but in the end, you gotta get the commitment and not be runner-up. Hopefully, this is the year he gets those top recruits. The real downside in the midwest for those classes is there are a ton of schollys to be given away, Crean has like 14 left. -

Of his final four, shouldnt Indiana be the only real threat? -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 04:50 PM) I understand that. But a devil's advocate would say, hey, TROUT was available way down the line. Didn't have to take him No. 1, 2 or 3. He was there, folks. IMy simple suggestion there could work wonders and the draft is just a bonanza. The draft is not just a bonanza. After the first half of the first round your odds at getting an impact player drop significantly. The higher you go the better your odds. Heres another for you greg http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2013/6/25...are-draft-picks easier to read.

I recommend this article when anyone wants to discuss the value of prospects acquired through the draft. If you are a fan of your team you want them to maximize this if possible, especially when rebuilding http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=4368

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 04:37 PM) True, but I also would prefer we sign Jose Abreu and Grandy and AJ and voila, we gots a very good team again (on paper). And that's not even talking about the MLB Draft. Yes, but to maximize your value for a prospect you have to try and get closest to the #1 pick as possible. There is quite a large fall off after the top half of the first round when you talk about over value of a prospect. If you make those moves that you mention (which has no bearing on our record this year) and also grab the best pick as possible you are maximizing your investment in players and prospects. You dont seem to understand that having a first round pick is not the same as having a top pick. IN fact they are quite a bit different.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 04:32 PM) You are misquoting me. My high end goal isn't .500. It's to win way more than that. My response was I'd RATHER GO .500 than get the No. 1 pick. Because ... I get a ton more wins from my favorite team during my favorite time of year, baseball season. I'll take the draft as it comes. Do I want my team to take Trout instead of Mitchell?? Of course. Do I want Sale over Hochevar (what a draft pick bust)? Of course. My ultimate goal isn't .500. But will I take it over a No. 1 pick? Of course I would. Thats where there is a disconnect. If you want your team to win titles, you want to maximize your chances at improving your roster, at this point it would be acquiring a better pick.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 04:30 PM) If it get's that high and it's 50/50 right now if it does the Sox won't get him, $60-65 it's possible . Just my opinion. I agree with this. Right now the going rate should be 50 million, but it could creep upwards of 100 at that point the Sox are probably out. This is a player in his prime (26) and this may be his only really productive contract for all we know.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 04:16 PM) So what you are saying is that Tebows prayers were answered? Its his bday too.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 04:17 PM) How bout signing the guy from Cuba? Where's the outrage that we are not going to get him? That's a way to rebuild FAST. There are other ways to win than hope your team loses and gets a higher draft pick. Like I said, we STILL get a first rounder no matter what. SHould be a decent player in theory. Having a first round pick is not the same as having a top 1-3 or even 1-10 pick. Its just not. And who said they arent signing the 26 year old from Cuba, Jose Abreu (he has a name BTW)? If you want to start b****ing about them possibly not doing it then rage dude.s

And the draft may be a crapshoot from top to bottom, but there is a TON of value in not only getting into the top 10, but getting one of those top picks. Just check the history of the draft. In TWo drafts back to back with top 10 picks Washington got Storen, Strasburg and Harper. Since we are completely out of any playoff contention, if you want your team to improve then you want their odds to best the best it can be to draft a future all-star. The only way to improve those odds is to lose, and lose alot.
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 04:13 PM) I was referring to Rock's question. If we go .500, we win a TON more games during my summer. And it does nothing but hurt your team's chances of rebuilding.

2007, 5 again, 4 taken in top 15 picks.
-
2008 first round, 5 all stars, 3 in first top picks, 2 in supplemental.
-
2011 first round, one all star, once again taken in the top 15.
-
2010 first round, 4 all stars, all taken in the top 15 picks. (13 to be exact)
-
Washington cleaned up that draft. Storen and Strasburg with their first two picks. Damn.
-
We got Phegley at 38 that year. Not bad.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 04:06 PM) Somehow I sincerely doubt the Angels ever had a clue that he'd be this good. Well they drafted a different guy right before him : Randal Grichuk
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 04:06 PM) A lot of us actually didn't want the Sox to take him due to the comparisons he was getting at the time to Rowand. There were 3 all stars drafted in that first round, two of them were picked before Trout. Guy kind of exploded.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 04:04 PM) I never saw a single person complain when he went. Literally the only comment on the trout pick in the draft thread was "well the Angels sure like outfielders, don't they"? There were no "Nuts, darn, drat, I wanted him!" posts. Look at how many other teams passed on him, guy was a good bit of scouting by LAA.
