Mags/Nomar Trade: YES or NO? Who Knows!?!
BrandoFan replied to RibbieRubarb's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Seriously, why not have both? Bangbus Nomar? -
I thought the same thing, but if Wright is lights-out in the pen (he has the stuff to be) and Munoz has a good spring and Honel...ah, forget it, Tampa will ask for Reed and Cotts, so we ain't getting s***.
-
More like Marx brothers-- scoundrel southsider and fake Mexican Tex are heaping abuse on dumb trumpet-blower PA.
-
Ok I am wrong, but I made an educated guess, it must count for something, no?
-
And by "check" he means pictures of himself re-enacting Civil War in a leppard print speedo 2 sizes too small.
-
So was I; the entire process couldn't have been more ill-advised and random, and I personally took pleasure in shooting down candidates I do not like.
-
What I don't understand is how Kris Honel, a guy with two major league ready pitches who is AT LEAST 2 years away from getting him his cup o' coffee, is more valuable than a 3-pitch monster Rauch who is JUST getting over the shoulder procedure (it's been 2.5 years) and by all acounts is ready to compete for rotation. Back to Magglio-Nomar...
-
Have you seen his OPS from the right side in the last 2 years? I am talking about low 400s (as compared to 850 from left one)....Kerry frigging Wood out-hit him, for crying out loud! He couldn't bunt for worse from the left side if he tried....And ANY manager who doesn't have the balls to tell Valentin to switch around or SHUT THE f*** UP AND RIDE THE PINE should be fired IMMEDIATELY. YMMV
-
Dodgers already have a young, cheap, fast Itzituris who can field with the best of them in NL......Adjusting Nomar's numbers to Dodger stadium (once again I am forced to use post-injury 3 year numbers) and unfamiliar NL pitchers, I'd be suprised if he posts anything higher than 850 OPS- is it worth paying him 12 (+1) Mill and giving up Miller and Jackson/Mota for? Evans is not a good GM, is he?
-
I like the way you're thinking, and for Huff, I'd give up Danny Wright (provided he has a good ST in bullpen, otherwise he is not worth a lot to TB), Munoz and maybe Honel.
-
That's because other mods are always doing me favors....like not banning me and s***. Whachoo got for me, partna? I hope you're kidding (can't tell with you)
-
All I care about is not giving up Cotts, Rauch, Wright and Honel.
-
Finals are so gay.

You know, if Valentin can muster a 675-700 OPS as a lefty-versus-LHP, I wouldn't mind having him around to play 2B even if Garciappara comes here. That would be one hellava range and DP between those two slingers, lol. Freddy Garcia can stick his 6+ Mill arbitration money where a needle can't reach. Why? 'Cuz he is a problem child whose 2-year ERA AWAY from Safeco confines is 4.70....and as if that wasn't enough, in the last 3 years, Royals, our biggest divisional opponent, has been beeting the living s*** out of him (ERA of 6.40). I doubt if I'd pay him 3-4 Mill at this point. . Now if it's Carlos Guillen for Valentin swap staight-up (why would Seattle do it?), then ok, fine. Come to think of it, Guillen not a defensive wiz by any means (a touch better than Val tho), can't run as well as Valentin and has averaged some 85 OPS points LESS in the last 3 seasons.....so let's hope the 2 Mill difference in salaries will be spent wisely because you're losing overall production on the deal.

Don't get me started on you and your spamm, er, thread-starting ways. Suffice to say, I am still waiting for the Maxim's 50 Mastrurbation Grips For the Fall link you promised.
-
YASNY, look at what Nomar has done in last 3 years since his injury....Anyone who thinks Nomar is still the same player he was isnot right in the head.
-
YASNY, rumors of "Valentin to Seattle is all but done" have been ALL OVER every Sox board and media outlet in Chicago ALL day long. Apparently, now that Vizquel has failed the physical, Sox see a chance to steal Carlos Guillen and save 2.5 Mill while they're at it. I personally can live with Jose and Uribe platooning at SS and/or Jose hitting LH exclusively if Willlie Harris fails miserably and Uribe is forced to cover 2B against LHP.......The way Nomar has hit, ran and fielded in last 3 years, he would not be a huge improvement at SS and you're saving 7 Mill on a deal, well 8 if you count that deferred Mill.
-
I did that??!! Are you sure it wasn't taken out of context?
-
And I don't want Perez after he goes through arbitration, either. Works out well for both sides, doesn't it?
-
Understatement of the year; Boras is reportedly looking for 13-14 Mill a YEAR. I wouldn't pay 8 Mill for him. But then again, I am stupid like that, not paying 1/7th of the entire payroll for a pitcher who'd be lucky to have a 4.00 ERA in a hitter's park in AL.
-
I know I've given you s*** before, but in all honesty I can't remember EVER skipping any of your posts while reading a thread, on either forum. Believe me, not everybody has that honor, lolol. And the fact that you've stuck with this site through thick and thin (I know I personally haven't) from the beginning makes you a lil' cooler in my book. So Mod on!

No, I don't want Nomar here afterall. I know I must have mentioned these reasons before in one context or another, but bear with me: 1. I looked at his last 3 years and I couldn't BELIEVE what I saw: he is LITERALLY a different player away from Fenway, with something like 900-700 OPS distribution. That is Todd Helton territory, and 3 years is a big enough sample for me. Whether it has something to do with his wrist (I bet it does), attitude, age, Fenway Park, line-up protection or a little of all the above....FACTS are FACTS. Do you know what his OPS is in 35 at bats at USCF in last 2 seasons? 400.........Hell, as clutch as he's been his entire career, even RISP/RISP-2outs/bases-loaded numbers took a MAJOR dive in 2003.........SO I guess he'll fit right in with the rest of Sox chokers, lololol.........Total 3-year OPS? 870 which is still pretty damn good, but not nearly as good as he was in 1998-2000 before said injury.......arguably you can get that production from Valentin if you don't let him hit RH, lol. 2. Nomar doesn't want to be here. There are players who can be discontent and STILL put up huge numbers. There are also players who are more susceptible to prolonged mental funks and let the discomfort get the best of them. I personally don't want to find out if Nomar is one of those players as it might just ruin the team's entire year. (see: Konerko times 2) 3. If you wanna see a prime example of a star hitter choking in playoffs, look up Nomar's stats in the first 10 games of 2003 playoffs.......Other than Eric Chavez and Tejada and Derek Lee, nobody was worse. If we are "going for it" this year, playoffs is something we always must keep in mind and something was clearly not right with Nomar. 4. Then you add the fact that Williamson is making 3 Mill in arbitration and was absolutely TERRIBLE as a Red Sock......AND, get this, apparently Sox are being forced to give Jon Rauch/Danny Wright or maybe even Neil Cotts TOO. Not saying these guy are all that, but they are cheap and I personally wouldn't mind seeing both of them in the bullpen where stamina is not an issue and they can really let it fly... 5. Nomar is not a speed demon, nor is he a Gold Glover SS- like Valentin, too many damn mistakes.....Still pretty good, but so is young (and hopefully improving) Uribe.........at 300K. 6. If we buy into the premise that Maggs is "unsignable", wait until Nomar's agent opens his mouth......Nomar is already making about 12 million (not including another million that is deferred) and as if it wasn't enough, he's on the wrong side of 30 as well, so any talk of long-term deal has to have another unnecessary risk figured into it as there is a difference between wear-in-tear in RF and one at SS. 7. In case of a Nomar-to-LA re-route, I don't think Sox fans can take NOT only losing Maggs but also getting teased with Nomar before losing him as well....The perception will not be, um, conducive to SEASON-ticket sales, what with most people not knowing much about Mota, Miller, Jackson and all.........USE MAGGS IF YOU'RE GONNA DEAL WITH LA. No need to screw around, Sheffield's has just been taken off the market, LA's ripe for the picking. Using Boston as leverage is wise. It's late and I may leave a few things out that are worth considering. Feel free to add.

1. Does this trade make us into World Series favorites? No, it doesn't. Considering we averaged 83.5 wins in the last 2 seasons while playing one of the weakest divisions of the decade if not of all time.......and can barely muster 55 Mill worth of payroll......and haven't been to WS in 44 years.....people actually have the chutzpah to assume Yankee-esque, ultra-demanding posturing? Wow, we could trade Maggs for Barry f***in' Bonds and Sox still might not even win the ALC....... 2. People are talking about Maggs as though he is Vladimir Guerrero or Sammy Sosa in his prime....He had 99 RBIs this season hitting in a HITTER'S park, and generally ran the bases worse and hustled less in RF than ever before!!! An GIDP machine. He is also making 14 Million (look at Edmonds and Guerrero and Edgar for comparison) and the consensus is he is virtually INSIGNABLE after 2004......Did I mention he is one of the least marketable "stars" in baseball? The reason I have to hammer these points home in every other post is because it seems so many people here don't even know about these little particulars; all they seem to remember about Magglio is the "O-E-O", a friendly moon-pie face and the highly debatable "best RF in Chicago" tag..... 3. White Sox aren't the ONLY team that wants to make a smart trade and make themselves BETTER. Do you think that had Garciaparra had a 950 OPS/125 RBI season, stole 20 bases, won the Gold Glove, made only 8 Million and had actually excelled in the playoffs, leading the Red Stockings into the World Series promised land, do you think for a MOMENT that they would be getting rid of one of the most recognizeable players in baseball who could produce like THAT......for a very good but-not-great-Magglio???? Common, they may be stupid, but not THAT stupid.......They are not running a "let White Sox f*** us in the ass" charity and as such there is a BIG risk (Nomar and his wrist thing, Magglio and uncertainty whether he'll pefrorm in front of big crowds and will ever do anything to justify 14 Mill salary, etc) for either team, especially the money-strapped White Sox, in this blockbuster of a deal. I think this trade is certainly big by Sox standards (Uribe, Shownweiss), but I feel it's NOT as BIG in terms of its importance to Sox 2004 playoff chances as people make it out to be. I am more concerned with whether or not Billy Koch, Paul Konerko and Jose Valentin's salaries can be dropped without getting overpaid bums like Perez and Garcia in return. I am concerned with wheher Garland can step it up, and whether Wright can be what Gary Glover as a long-man in 2002, and whether or not Buerhle of 2001 or 2003 shows up, and whether or not Lee and Thomas have their 2003 success and if Rowand can indeed smoke LHPs and Jeremy Reed RHPs, and if Harris can muster a 330 OBP and if Crede can drive in 80+ runs and Kelly Wunsht allow less inherited runners to score and if one of Neil Cotts/Jon Rauch/Pacheco/Diaz steps up and makes it easier on everybody else and if Shownwiess can get his breaking ball over, becoming a LH Sullivan, if Olivo can hit a slider.........and OF COURSE wthether or not Jerry Reindorf will (wisely) open up his checkbook a little to get us one more IMPACT player should the Sox find themselves in CONTENTION by the ASB. And more.
