I will go as far as to say that if Nolan was pitching today instead of 60-80's, in tiny stadiums like Devilraydome, Camden, BOB, etc, with juiced up players, live ball, watered down pitching, etc...he would be a 4.00 ERA pitcher...whereas Unit and Pedro would be untouchable if they pitching back then- I am talking about ERA in 1.00s. Easily. 292 career losses certainly is human, but 5,714 strikeouts is anything but human. That is sick and insane, and his 7 career no-hitters is remarkable. I can't believe I'm having to defend Nolan Ryan. I am sorry I have to point out somethnig this obvious: Strikeouts (like homers) are only as good as the ERA/OPSagainst (RBI total ) they go toward improving. Baseball 101. Simply put, as his OPS dips below 800 and his pitches taken/ab ratio dips below 4, his value to this team goes down SIGNIFICANTLY, geometrical progression-like. He can't field, can't run and not a positive force in already disease-terous clubhouse. Unless he starts hitting, might as well platoon him with Willie Vanillie.

Koch will be just fine...but as a rule a closer's ERA needs to be half a point to a point lower than that of a starter. The only things that redeems Billy the Goat is his semi-decent conversion rate in the last 2 months because 4.60 ERA is pretty bad for a closer, certainly below average whereas Mark is just .30 points below league average.
