  1. Jeff Abbott goes yard. 4-3 Sox!!!!
  2. Yeah...but who is gonna win in a battle, a grizzly bear or a shark?
  3. WSI is so irrelevant it's not even funny. *big f***in' yawn*
  4. What does it have to do with a grieving widow and industrial accidents? Goddamn, can you get any more clueless with your analogies? What do you have against money anyway? I don't have much of it, but I don't obcess about hating it either. Or not...Then again, your're 16, you're supposed to think that way. Sure as hell beats teen angst
  5. Damn straight...to say nothing of the lives of others lawsuit will help save- you'll be surprised just how fast those companies improve safety measures and come up with a more reasonable shift schedule...when they face losing tens of millions of dollars every time there is an "accident".
  6. Great point. A teenager.. with their entire life ahead of them. Likely with barely any cares or responsibilities at this point in his life chooses to kill themself rather than just open their mouth and get some help. They'd rather enflict the pain on their family. I've talked down a suicidal person. And before they opened their eyes the thing they said most often was "This will show them. They won't have to worry about me anymore. They'll be sorry". Killing yourself to get back at someone? If that isn't selfish I don't know what is. I was being extremely sarcastic. Not all suicides are created equal...Yukio Mishima death was culmination of his art and I am happy for him....A untreatable cancer patient taking his own life to avoid pain and speed up the process for his family? I applaud the courage...Ex-Enron CFO blowing his brains ou on account of his massive crime? I wish I was there to pull the trigger, that cocksucker.....An innocent 14yo girl jumping to her death? There is nothing sadder in this world than when a biological entity who had no bearing on its creation and has everything to live for is suffering so much that he/she would rather "cancel" their own existence than face another day....whether it be because of impulsivity, anghst, perceptive absoluteness or a serious reason like molestation, incest...profoundly sad indeed. You can't color all cases based on your personal experience, nor can you gauge the degree of validity of their perception using simple logic--if they don't think they are worth saving/have anything to live for, there is short of nothing you can do about it. Perception is reality. For the record, I've never had anyone commit suicide either among my friends or immediate family, which is not to say they didn't consider it or didn't the have a reason(s) to do it. They are old school, having come from a different culture I guess. They cope....But I tell you, if my family were to parrish in a plane crash or something like that, and I lost the reason to live, I would be searching for the highest cliff the next day, you can bank on it.
  7. I would consider him unlucky had he taken proper safety precautions; even the most basic of which to go with someone else and let someone back at home know where you're going and how long you expect to be gone. Had he done this and still had to break his arm because his partner got eaten by a bear and his friend who he told where he was going got hit by a car, then I would say, well that's just unlucky. Precautions can really sway luck to or against you. My father and his 3 friends went rock climbing when they were my age. As usual, they took all the luck-swaying precautions...but because of the faulty design of the key piece of equipment, there was an accident, with them falling from 140+ feet height....His buddies died while my father walked away with a minor chronic limp. I suppose he was very "smart" about it, what with landing just the right way in the right place and all of that... I presume 100's of hikers go alone each year and 99.9% of them come back with both arms intact. He didn't. Plain and simple.
  8. I heard Alvarez personally knew Sylvia Plath. Any word on whether she indeed suffered through a particularly nasty, almost unbearable case of PMS, a condition that was the big "inspiration" behind her brand of peotry/world outlook and which eventually drove her into the grave?
  9. I truly believe that any decent, consciousness-endowed human being has entertained those kind of thoughts at least once in their lifetime. Disclaimer: no offense to the legions of assorted soul-less bastards and narcissistic f***tards who trudge through life in blissful ignorance, free of introspection.
  10. Hey, man, I loved Red Faber's Book of Tools!
  11. : Oh, it would take more than Philippe K. Dick's "reality vs perception" theme and religious symbolism to make the movie deep. Afterall, 21st century auterism Wachowski brothers adhere to are ass post-modern as they are "less than meets the eye". It's a perfect movie to allow room for personal projection/suggestive interpretation, which I feel is cheating in the end....not that I care either way. Then again, on purely brainy action level, Matrix is as good as it gets.
  12. True dat, but no excuse for having one of HSC's patented blond moments, lol Matrix Reloaded revolutionary visuals go without saying (I am not too thrilled about the action-over-brains direction of the franchise, though and the whole Christian Neo-Platonism angle is perfunctory to say the least, though I'd wait until the Revolutions), but Hero has 4-5 moments of pure trascendent, majestic beauty that you simply don't associate with HongKong wire-action genre. Amazing. Other 2002 movies I liked for different reasons: Russian Ark, Out of Africa, Spirirted Away, X-2, Adaptation,. I despise Chicago (almost as much as that Masturbatory Edit-o-rama known as BUZZ LURHMAN'S moulin rouge). What a pedestrian, crowd-pleasing toothless satire that soils Bob Fosse's legacy. CZJ was spectacular, though, just pefect for the role and ReZe was pretty good I guess. (Then again, it's still better than last year's "safe"winner, Beautiful Mind. ) Are you familiar with Pauline Kael?
  13. I meant to say Pulp Fiction, not Fiction, duh.
  14. Another great movie last year was Brazilian City of God, a weird hybrid between Fiction and Y Tu Mama Tambien.
  15. I was blown away by this low-key meditation on childhood and institutionized, no, culturalized, racism. Right up there with another Australian/New Zelandian masterpiece, Walkabout . Good to see Kenny Bra drop his Olivier schtick for a change. The very last "reunion" sequence was so unforgettable I nearly got chocked up. Glad to see you liked Ran as well. Great epic. If you're a fan of Eastern epic fantasies and like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, I suggest you watch Hero with Jet Lee, Zhang Ziyi. In way a superior movie, with the most beautiful visual effects I've ever seen.
  16. Doable? Are you crazy? Jose had a quick release and as strong a throw as could be considering the runner was gonna take him out...the low throw ended up behind the awkward, off-kilter Wunsht, but even if it was Konerko and he had scooped it, the runner was ALREADY on the bag, it wouldn't even be a tie, he beat it out easily. Jose's mistake was to even attempt to be a hero in that situation, considering the runner was on 3rd. Dumbass play...but Konerko, Crede and Jimenez have cost more runs with their defense than Jose, so your larger point is still valid.
  17. Yeah, that was awful s*** to watch...not that we didn't know Paulie is the worst base-runner in the majors this year, possibly worse than 40yo banged up Edgar. What you didn't mention however, is how many runs Konerko's D. has cost the Sox against Kansas City and Cleveland alone. He played well in Minnesoata for a change (unlike July 2001 series where he royally f***ed Foulke in the ass), I'll give him that.....So, you're right, at 8 million a year, Konerko absolutely must hit to the tune of 900 OPS and drive in 110-120 runs out of 5th spot. If he can't do that, he is worthless to the Sox. Forget about improvement, he has regressed and is worse than he was in 99, 2001, 2002 or even 2000. I disagree- I think Konerko has 40 homer potential if healthy and he has that pretty, very quick RH swing...Too bad the midlife crisis he's mired in, combied with f***ed up hip have robbed him of his power- he is all tentative now and does not utilize lower body strenght or generate any significant torque...which means he is all-hands now, and unless you are Carlos Delgago or McGwire, there is no way you can hit it to opposite field or or center with authority; even when he connects, what used be home runs are now merely flyouts. Add to it the fact that, like Crede, Konehead had never enough self-discipline or pure "eye" to be able to walk a 100+ times when he is struggling. Say what you will about Mark Belhorn or Jeremy/Jason Giambis, at least they take their base when they can't hit a lick.
  18. Does 'unlucky' figure into the equation? Anywhere?
  19. Is that why you all but took out an ad in the Times to convince others that you really aren't fat, bold and borderline ugly like the pic suggested you were? Acceptance and reassurence, right...all dem YSPies are obviously doing wonders for your self-esteem.

    Wow

Jas, you stilll think Maggs is a bad option at CF?
  21. BrandoFan

    Wow

has pitched the worst complete game I've seen in a while- he hung so much junk to us, striking out only one batter, the 9th place pinch-hitter. Too bad Sox hitters were ever worse, insisting on getting themselves out and putting long, ugly swings on perfectrly hittable pitches, stranding runners OB in every which fashion. The only bright spot is Daubach who is beginnign to thrive with regular at bats, now there is a hitter who's actually sound mentally and mechanically against a breaking ball pitcher. Crede looked sharp for the second straight game. Maggs had a decent game all around and Lee looked great in his first at bat, taking the ball deep to the opposite gap for the first time, it seems, since the Yankee series of June 2000...too bad he then proceeded to overswing in his next 3 at bats, skying balls all over the place. Dumbass. Overall game review: two vomit projectiles up. Way up.
  22. bmr's looks = rick white's stats.
