White Sox vs. Yankees, 8/01/07 (L)
AirScott replied to The Ginger Kid's topic in 2007 Season in Review
I've seen people say they don't see with Andy Gonzalez is up here...and he did just strike out...but he had a .223 batting average coming into the at-bat, but has a .336 OBP to go with it. The man's got some plate discipline. -
His career path hasn't been established at all yet, but Felix Hernandez could do it one day. He has the advantage of an early start, he just needs to pitch to his potential and stay off the DL.

QUOTE(knightni @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 01:02 PM) While I appreciate your thread-making abilities; Jose has a "dump-on" thread already made. http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=60362 Oh, it's not the same. We could have the first 20-game loser since Mike Maroth. It's not the same thread as "only the non-waiver trade deadline has passed."

He's now 6-14, and has a shot at losing 20 games...

Raiders looking at Daunte Culpepper
AirScott replied to AirScott's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Aug 1, 2007 -> 09:09 AM) What Balta is saying is that Culpepper wasnt healed last year, and it wouldnt have mattered if Culpepper was in Miami or Oakland last year because his knee was still screwed up. Culpepper wouldnt have been throwing to Moss much of last year for the same reasons he wasnt able to hit Chambers and Booker, he didnt have the line to protect him and he didnt have the mobility to escape pressure. BTW, Culpepper to Oakland is a done deal now http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2956542 He didn't run all that much in 2003 and 2004, and I remember there was some confusion swirling around Culpepper and his knee last season in Miami. I'm just saying he's not as good as he looked when he had Randy Moss. -
Well...Buehrle has a shot. So does Roy Oswalt. Roy Halladay has an outside chance, but it probably won't happen -- too many DL stints. And you can put Johan Santana on that list. This will really depend on longevity. If Buehrle can pitch till he's 42 or so, and win 20 games once or twice, he can do it. And he can't play on teams like this one many more times. And if the current trend continues, a move to the NL would be wise for him. He could pitch for the Cardinals in his twilight years, like I remember he expressed the desire to do.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 11:47 AM) Randy Moss has the ability to heal Knee injuries? Oh Mr. Moss...heal me! He sucked in Minny after Moss left, before he was injured. I'm saying he really, really benefited from being able to throw Moss seven or eight jumpballs in the end zone every season. You can't blame the knee for throwing 12 picks and six TDs in seven games in 2005. -
And it wouldn't surprise me at all if the Sox were to place Jose on waivers, just to see if anybody bites. In fact, they'd better. I forget the rules, but I believe there is a window afterwards to work out a trade if he passes through.

QUOTE(kwolf68 @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 06:30 PM) That ZERO you see is the chances of anyone outside of the California penal league taking a chance at Jose...he is now officially a stiff. You need to be arrested first to play there.

QUOTE(Whitewashed in '05 @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 04:27 PM) Our bench now gets weaker and our bullpen...stays the same. Mack is good with the bat and the field when he's not in center. What is KW up to... It's not a move to help us in 2007. Think of it that way. And this Jon Link fellow has been pretty good in High-A ball.
-
Pair Culpepper with Randy Moss, and the magic happens. Maybe Detroit would be a better fit, with Calvin Johnson and Roy Williams at wide receiver.
-
And I know the hang-up in this case is money, but remember Pods' $3 million or so, Crede's $5 million or so, Jermaine Dye's $7 million and Jose Contreras' $10 million figure to be shaved from the 2008 payroll, or at least the latter two's.

Every prospective 2008 starting outfield posted here has no punch, no matter the combination of players. The most recent one I saw only named Owens in CF and Sweeney in RF for sure. I don't like Owens in center. And even if Brian Anderson gets another shot, it's still a punchless outfield. He won't get another shot, anyway, it seems. Andruw Jones is a free agent after this season, and although he's hitting only .216, he'll be 31 next season and has nine straight years now of 20+ home runs. He's on pace for about 30, so I hope he's considered by KW this offseason. He's generally good for 30-40 home runs and a .260 batting average, so if it's assumed Konerko and Thome will be back, Jones would be a good fit at No. 5 in the lineup. Torii Hunter should also be sought after by the Sox. But is this not the best-case scenario for the 2008 outfield: Owens in LF, Jones/Hunter in CF, Sweeney in RF?

QUOTE(kwolf68 @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 09:56 AM) I wonder how Arias did this year in the minors...no doubt he projects as a fine prospect and the Rangers just acquired a brilliant SS prospect from Atlanta and still have Young. Arias looks available to me, but what woule we need to trade to them to get him? I just don't know how highly they value him and what we could offer. Wikipedia tells me he was on the 60-day DL to start the season. His MiLB.com page tells me he's hitting .182 with Oklahoma this season, and he hasn't played since June 29...the internet kind of sucks for information sometimes, I wish I was a Baseball America subscriber.

QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 08:27 AM) This would be interesting. Seems that all former roiders must go through NYY. All right, Jose Canseco. Eric Gagne looks like the chubby little brother.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 11:50 AM) He has those 13 home runs in 286 at bats. A normal season for him is about 600 at bats, so he'd be on a 26-27 home run/year pace. That's way down from where he was even just 2 years ago. And that's still while playing in Texas. But how long was he playing hurt? Trade rumors have been circulating around him for a bit, and it's hard to trade a guy who's on the DL, so he may have kept playing and hoping the pain would subside. I don't think there's any reason to think he won't be back to hitting 35+ home runs per year.
-
QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 11:39 AM) This is a great deal for Texas. Catcher has been one of their biggest needs since Pudge left, and they have one now. They can use him at 1st if need be too. Andrus and Harrison included only makes it that much sweeter. Great haul for Texas...not sure what Atlanta was thinking. Teixeira isn't the guy he was a couple years back. Keep in mind he had a stint on the DL, which explains the 13 home runs. And who knows how long he was playing hurt before going on the DL. He's also a Gold Glove first baseman and still ranks 11th in the AL in OPS. This is a fairly low cost for Atlanta, especially since Saltalamacchia wasn't going to supplant McCann at catcher or anything.

QUOTE(shoota @ Jul 20, 2007 -> 01:11 AM) Lou Piniella knew how important the intracity series were. Guillen got outmanaged. I'm embarrased for him. Yeah, Lou undressed Ozzie out there. If only Guillen knew his bullpen was going to crap all over itself, we'd have swept the Cubs that first series.

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jul 27, 2007 -> 11:12 PM) Will Mark ever stop with the Cardinal bulls***? Honestly... Imagine if you were a baseball player and drafted by the Dodgers. They can afford to keep you, so what's the harm in continuing to cheer for a team you grew up rooting for? I can see it if we were the Marlins or Royals, a team that always loses its best players once they hit free agency, but Buehrle wanted to stay and took a discount to do so. He could marry David Eckstein or Braden Looper for all I care.

Iguchi Traded to Phillies for RP/SP Michael Dubee

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 28, 2007 -> 09:52 AM) There's no better way to judge a players defense than seeing it with your own 2 eyes. And I haven't seen much of Chase Utley these season, but I really don't remember him as Gold Glove-caliber. -
QUOTE(SoxFan562004 @ Jul 27, 2007 -> 10:00 AM) I would be in the Dye camp long before Pods. No more Pods. He has spent a lot of time on the DL. Like I mentioned in an earlier thread, I'm hoping Crede comes back strong enough to play his last year out, and stick Fields in LF. The difference between Crede and Pods is while Pods seems to have various ailments (groin, hamstring, ribs), Crede has one problem (his back). But hey, it's not like back problems tend to be recurring or anything. Right, someone just spoke out against sarcasm.
-
I'd love to see Pods back, but I think it only happens under two conditions... 1) He has to stay healthy for the rest of the season, meaning not so much as a tweak. 2) He starts stealing bases like he had in 2005, or somewhere close to it. If he was a guy who would steal 12 or so bases per month when he was going good, I want him to steal another 15-20 this season, just to show he's still capable of stealing 40+. And he needs to have about a 75% success rate.

White Sox all over ESPN trade rumors
AirScott replied to JUSTgottaBELIEVE's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
Ah, the bait-and-switch technique for Garland. That's senior year consumer education paying off for me. -
QUOTE(RME JICO @ Jul 26, 2007 -> 07:35 AM) I really hope a win doesn't make KW think that the Sox still have a shot. The deadline is closing fast. Being back 15 1/2 in the division and 14 in the wild card race...I'm sure Kenny is starting to figure it out.

Mariners Looking at Dye; Sox Looking at Otsuka
AirScott replied to CWSGuy406's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(beck72 @ Jul 26, 2007 -> 06:19 AM) A few thoughts: *The mariners could use Dye. Two decent prospects should do it [one in the top 7, and one in the top 20], as the M's would get the draft picks for Dye if they don't re-sign him. *Josh Fields should be in LF to start 2008. He'll probably go to winter ball and get some time in LF. Crede should be good to go for 2008. The sox will need his bat with Dye gone. *Otsuka makes no sense, unless the sox know they can re-sign him, or will give him the big cash and 3, 4 yr deal we'll seek as a FA. If the sox have Otsuka as their #1 target this offseason, then going after him now would be OK if the price wasn't too bad [seeing how he's injured, the price may be reduced]. The sox would still get the comp. picks if Otsuka signs elsewhere. I think that's the condition of Otsuka being acquired. There's really not much sense in fixing the bullpen for this season alone.
