QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jul 25, 2007 -> 10:19 PM) At this point, Dealer Kenny better be in rull trade negotiations for our tradeable players. Because waiting till the last possible moment is not a good thing. There are a few players like Hu and all that we should be targettting. Its okay to ask for 3 prospects, but you need to have a plan for what you think you will get back. You dont want teams to swoop in, undercut you, and take something valuable away from you. There is a rumor that Grudz from the Royals is moving over to the Mets. This is a mlbtraderumors probably bulls*** trade and all, but how many teams really need a 2nd baseman. Waiting until the last minute on the trade deadline, will get us an old team next week and 90 to 100 losses. I at least want to see some of the kids play this summer, so we can see what we have. I dont want to see Pods and Erstad and Dye and Gooch on this team, if they arent coming back next year. The thing is, Dye, Iguchi and Contreras' value isn't getting any lower at this point. And all is quiet on the trade front, so it's really best to wait it out at this point.

QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 25, 2007 -> 07:37 PM) So, this is the first I'll say it this year, but we really have to improve our lineup against lefties next year. Hopefully Iguchi will be gone, as people don't realize how dreadful he is against LHP. Having Fields in there everyday will help. Almost as bad as Thome.

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jul 25, 2007 -> 09:57 PM) The quote "Konerko is the heart and soul of this team" made me laugh, seeing as this team after tonight is going to be 45-56. Trust me, Konerko is far from the problem. Probably the last thing. The way it was written just made me laugh. Sorry, I never know when the unfounded pessimism is genuine anymore. I was on here earlier and someone said Konerko's lack of speed hurts the team. I asked how many 30 homer-100 RBI guys can you find -- and realistically acquire -- who can also run? So there appears to be a "Trade Konerko" camp.

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jul 25, 2007 -> 08:34 PM) Also, to add to you just saying "good trades by Cleveland" you forgot to add that after they traded away their late 90's core away for some of the players they have now, they went 222-263, including a 68-94 2003. I give credit to the Indians. They had a very nice run, rebuilt, and now have a great core. However, they had to get to this point somehow, and "good trades" also lead to a complete mess for 3 years, a mess that has left the fan base in a shell of what it once was. There's a certain setback a team suffers when it makes trades that don't work out. Where would Cleveland be now if Grady Sizemore's career turned out like Jeremy Reed's? And where are the Mariners if Jeremy Reed's career follows the path that Sizemore's did? Are they still cellar-dwellers in 2005 and 2006?

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jul 25, 2007 -> 09:53 PM) At this point, is that a good or bad thing? Um, good? He's still on pace to hit 30+ homers and drive in 100 RBIs. That would be four straight years of that, and his defense is solid. What do you got?
-
He had thrown a no-hitter in 1990, or something.

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jul 25, 2007 -> 07:48 AM) No, but Lou isnt the patient type either, and he is gonna play the guys who dont need to be told what to do (ie. veterans). Jacque Jones doesnt have the greatest arm out there in CF, and he isnt the greatest defender, he is just better than all of the options. Floyd puts up big numbers when healthy(but he is never healthy). I don't get why you're disagreeing with me. Somebody said Jones and Floyd are being played over Murton because of the money owed. I said no, it's because Murton stinks. I never said Jones didn't stink. I was just saying Murton stinks more, and Piniella will play whoever stinks less.
-
I feel cheated. The question was, Besides Kenny Rogers, who are the other 3 lefty pitchers to throw perfect games? The answer I came up with was David Wells, Sandy Koufax and Randy Johnson (who threw one in 2004). The answer had no Johnson, but did have Tom Browning. Am I the only one who feels slighted by this?

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jul 25, 2007 -> 11:00 AM) I'm being realistic, IMO. We have so many holes to fill and the Indians/Tigers are still very, very good. KC has more talent than we do, IMO, and the Twins are always better at taking advantage of things than we are. I'll be surprised, with the way the division is and the free agent class going into next year, if we even finish third. And no, it wasn't out of nowhere. It was in response to WC's comment about how next year is our "last year" to compete. I think July 2007 is too early to count out the 2008 Sox. The rotation will likely be Buehrle-Garland-Vazquez-Danks (in his second year)-one of Broadway/Floyd/Haeger/Gio. There are holes, yes, but they can be filled, and obviously the bullpen will look completely different.
-
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jul 25, 2007 -> 10:53 AM) I'm sorry, but we're not going to compete next year. When people say that in April, it's too soon. When people say that in July...of the previous season...I mean...I'm at a loss for words. And it was kind of out of nowhere, too. I think this board has reached a new high for unsolicited pessimism.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jul 25, 2007 -> 10:37 AM) With the right deals, it'd be fine. Frees up money, too. John Scheurholz: A good GM trades a player one year too early. A bad GM trades him a year too late. (That's Dye-Crede last year, BTW.) I don't want anything to do with Konerko in the future. His hip's going to die (he's playing on borrowed time as is), his contract's too big for flexibility purposes, and he's so slow it's disgusting. It's $12 million per year for a guy who, despite his slow start, is still on pace to hit 36 home runs and knock in 100. That would make four straight years with 30 homers and 100 RBIs. He catches just about anything he can get to at first base. He's slow, yes, but how many 30-100 guys are you going to find that can run? And how many of those guys are realistically obtainable?
-
I believe the Angels offered Konerko an extra $1 million per year (as did the Orioles). So I'm sure the Angels have asked KW about Konerko, and I'm sure KW said, "I don't think so."

QUOTE(BearSox @ Jul 24, 2007 -> 03:27 PM) The only reason why Murton isn't starting for them is cause they are paying Floyd and Jones so much money. No, it's because he's a stinky fielder. Lou Piniella never struck me as the type to say, "OK Mr. Hendry, I'll play Jones and Floyd, but only because they make a combined $8 million. I really think we'd be a better team with Murton out there, but I understand."

Garland off the market, Vazquez available

QUOTE(shoota @ Jul 24, 2007 -> 02:16 PM) I don't think KW can trade Garland because of his injury. If KW were to trade Garland now, and his shoulder knot becomes worse, it would make KW an undesirable trading partner. Sirotka, Garcia and Garland? KW needs to keep Garland to ensure he has fellow GMs he can work with in the future. That said, I don't want him to trade Vazquez either, but for a different reason: Vazquez is good and has a decent contract. Trade Contreras if at all possible. I agree, and I think the only way I'd like to see Garland traded is if the offer was absolutely undeniable. -
He is a bad, bad fielder. Nay.

Yankees looking at Garland, Thornton?

QUOTE(knightni @ Jul 24, 2007 -> 01:04 PM) Not from what I've heard. Outside of Hughes, who do they have? If you're counting Hughes, you can also count Andy Phillips, who is with the big league club right now. Eric Duncan was another highly-touted prospect, but he's hitting .223 in AAA right now. -
QUOTE(Mr. Showtime @ Jul 24, 2007 -> 12:07 AM) I don't care. The whole organization blows at developing players. Fathom, I've gotta ask you this. Could you have imagined a month ago us sitting here one week from the deadline and looking at the realistic possibility that the Sox make zero deals? The Sox can't make zero deals. It will just take until the deadline because the key trading pieces aren't playing well, so their value isn't high, making the offers are sub-par. A deal might have been made already if Contreras was still throwing 94 mph, Dye was hitting .300 (or at least .270!) or if Iguchi was putting up his usual numbers. It's a little different trying to make trades when you're also trying to convince other GMs that these guys didn't age like sour milk.

Don't worry, Joe Cowley fires the first shot...

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jul 23, 2007 -> 08:11 PM) How many of the balls in play even left the infield? Alex sanchez used to be the same type of player, and look at where he's at. Sanchez also never, ever walked and took steroids.

They said on Postgame Live that Pods will be back tomorrow, but not Erstad.

Expect Mets to seriously pursue Iguchi
AirScott replied to Gene Honda Civic's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(CWSOX45 @ Jul 23, 2007 -> 06:00 PM) I really don't think the Mets are going to trade for Iguchi. They have Ruben Gotay, Damion Easley, AND now Marlon Anderson. The only way I see the Mets trading for Iguchi is if they basically get him for cheap. (Which I hope to god they don't.) There is no way they would give up a guy like Pelfrey or Milledge for Iguchi when they have that many options at 2B, that and Gotay is having a pretty good year. (Granted he's only had 107 at bats, but he's hitting .336.) I just read the article about this on MLB.com...Gotay has only taken five walks, and it didn't sound like Willie Randolph is too high on any of these guys. Would you be? -

QUOTE(Jimbo's Drinker @ Jul 23, 2007 -> 03:59 PM) who in their right mind would want contreras right now. Someone in the NL who needs pitching. Not much else is available and you can count on his numbers improving if he were to switch leagues. We're not getting Lastings Milledge for him, but I'm sure we could net someone of value. -
QUOTE(BearSox @ Jul 23, 2007 -> 03:30 PM) big whoop... let me know when he hits for a full two months. maybe then I would considered jumping on the bandwagon. It's a rather weak bandwagon...I'm on it...I'm urging people to not completely write him off yet. If he can get on base at a .350 clip, he'll be a valuable starter. Don't be surprised to see headlines like "Sox want Owens to add strength" during the offseason.

There was lots flying around. It was reported that KW was worried about Bucholz's health, which then turned into Bucholz failed a physical, then he said there never was a physical... I just remember those three -- Taveras, Bucholz and Hirsh -- were in the reported deal. -
QUOTE(beautox @ Jul 23, 2007 -> 02:56 PM) which game is the make up game? and which game is the DH? thanks in advance for a response. Tuesday...morning...I think...is the make-up from April 26.
