  1. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 04:43 PM) He has nothing but a fastball...hasn't been playing baseball too long...was an "under the radar" pick...has weak secondary pitches... ...and we took him first round? I'll be happy to admit I was wrong but I think this is a bust pick. What the f*** is this? -- Maybe the thing that bothers me most is: Cooper will have him throwing with less velocity to harness "control." f*** he already has "control." note his 18 walks in 99-2/3 innings...results in a 1.63 BB/9 ratio.
  2. Might take more than Danks. Probably him and another of our starting pitching prospects. Their starting rotation is nonexistent after Kazmir and Shields, plus nobody likes them as trading partners because they're so unreasonable...seriously, how many trades have they been involved in the past five years?
  3. Way to put him in motion. Good heads up baseball by Dye. This team can really get on a roll if that whole bullpen problem can get fixed.
  4. QUOTE(caulfield12 @ Jun 5, 2007 -> 10:15 AM) Whenever you pay for saves (in Weathers' case, 11), you're going to pay through the teeth, even when they're recorded by a 37 year-old or Al Reyes in TB. Maybe it's worth it to give them Lance Broadway, to heck if I know. I would almost rather rely on Aardsma or MacDougal or a player we traded Mac for (change of scenery) rather than dealing prospects for Weathers. Here's another issue with Weathers... 2007, his ERA at home (a park that plays similar to Comiskey) is 6.10 versus 2.65 on the road Small sample size, right? Well, in 2005, 06, and 07 (this is relevant since he's been a Red the entire time)... 4.72 HOME ERA versus 3.07 on the ROAD Which, when you consider the discrepancy in talent between AL and NL, equals, at best, David Riske, and, at worst, a 5+ ERA and the loss of some starting pitching depth. Here's another thought to be concerned about... Lefty Tyler Lumsden got his third straight win Saturday in Omaha’s victory. He improved to 5-3 after allowing one run and three hits in six innings. He is 3-0 with a 2.43 ERA in his last five starts. He's kind of closer by default in Cincy because, well, they stink. Great American Ballpark may play similar to Comiskey, but then again, the Reds' field yields the most homers in baseball. Similar, but not that close. But here's an encouraging stat: 0 HR allowed this season by Weathers.
  5. I don't see the point in making the big splash deals because these Sox aren't that far off. The hitting WILL come around, just because it really doesn't make any sense for it not to -- with the exception of Crede and Uribe (and Dye due to injuries) have done nothing but hit their throughout entire careers. Really, it doesn't make any sense for these guys not to come around. Anywho, I keep throwing out the Reds' David Weathers as one guy to acquire, for starters because the Reds suck so much that he may be made available. He's 37 years old with 16 years experience, which is more than our entire bullpen has combined. While he's been a major league reliever for 16 years, nobody in our pen has done it for more than two years, if that. With him (or any proven veteran reliever who might be available via trade), there would be more clear-cut roles and situations that we'd bring guys in, and we wouldn't have to read these words about Ryan Bukvich and Bret Prinz (this from today's Sun-Times): "...both will be expected to perform in late-inning clutch situations."
  6. Safe to call this one Flashback Friday?
  7. QUOTE(caulfield12 @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 07:08 PM) Didn't Vazquez give up a huge crooked number last year on a weekend game against TOR in the middle innings when he'd cruised through the first half of the game? He did that against just about everybody.
  8. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 07:02 PM) BizzaroSox Flashback Friday
  9. Owens looked good when he struck out, too, fouling off pitches and battling Burnett. Now slapping a double down the third base line, he's looking good so far. QUOTE(earthshiner @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 06:51 PM) who are they talking to? He's bringing us some luck Brooks Boyer.
  10. Just heard it on WSCR. Sweeney and Anderson have gotten a shot, I'm thinking Ozzie and KW are hoping to catch lightning in a bottle with Owens. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/press_releases/pre...sp&c_id=cws
  11. Recent history is on our side. Konerko's deal expired after 2005 but we re-signed him. From all indications, he won't be re-signed until after the season, if he even is. Obviously if he's going to be leaving you want to get something for him, but it doesn't always work out that way. And other circumstances come into play come the trading deadline (likeliness Buehrle will re-sign, how hard are we contending, what are the offers, etc.).
  12. QUOTE(fathom @ May 31, 2007 -> 08:37 PM) How can anyone say with a straight face that Erstad has been better than Chris Young this year? Maybe he was looking at the hitting starts for Chris Young, the pitcher on the Padres. Their numbers are real close except for slugging percentage and, consequently, OPS. I remember Young started slowly, but he's committed two errors to Erstad's one. It's not as bad as you and a few more make it out to be.
  13. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 31, 2007 -> 07:29 PM) I've been watching games for 14 years and have never heard of Hawk actually going to the clubhouse to get an injury update. This was all about the mancrush, nothing else. Or it looked pretty bad to see Erstad crumpled in heap after an act he has performed millions of times. (Swinging the bat, not striking out.)
  14. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 31, 2007 -> 07:27 PM) LOL Hawk actually went down to find out about Erstad. How pathetic. I'm glad Jay Mariotti has time to post here. But I guess you don't have a column to write till Sunday. Or maybe Hawk did it to find out for the viewers at home who would appreciate the information regarding their injured starting center fielder.
  15. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 31, 2007 -> 07:23 PM) More confident in that than A.J. making it to 2nd. Mackowiak isn't exactly hammering the ball this year either, so that swing and miss was not a big surprise. And Aboz, last page for an injury description. He swung to try and not leave AJ out to dry. It wasn't a strike. And that's generally the risk-reward aspect to the hit-and-run, but like I said, you really count on us stringing a bunch of hits together to get Pierzynski home against this guy?
  16. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 31, 2007 -> 07:15 PM) I'm glad Ozzie has time to post in the game thread. If Ozzie shot his mother would you disagree with it? And yeah, that is the end of the Erstad experiment. OK, so we don't call a hit-and-run with AJ on first...the way Halladay's dealing, you like the chances for AJ to move one base to the next in the next few at-bats till he scores? Really? Right now he's allowed 5 hits in 6 innings. AJ goes first to third on a successful hit-and-run, but otherwise it'd take 3 hits to get him home, 2 if we're lucky. You confident we get those hits to get AJ from first to home? And if Mack puts it in play and fails, AJ is in scoring positon.
  17. That overhead view of Erstad kind of made me cringe.
  18. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 31, 2007 -> 07:10 PM) It was a good idea? We already ran ourselves out of 1 inning, not worth the risk to do it again. Nah, you're right, let's try more station-to-station. Screw trying to manufacture something against arguably the AL's best pitcher of the past five years (barring injuries).
  19. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 31, 2007 -> 07:05 PM) Well we are being shut out through 5, and his 58 pitch count has CG SHO written all over it, so obviously their strategy is working to perfection. Hmphf, must be bad scouting then...I haven't seen Halladay do this before.
  20. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 31, 2007 -> 07:03 PM) A.J. trying to steal. That is really smart baseball right there. EDIT: Ahh hit and run. Still really bad. You should know better. Delete the first part for your pride. Also note Mackowiak's awful swing in an at-bat where he'd been mostly taking. Good idea by Ozzie. Get them moving, Halladay generally throws strikes and was due to throw one. In retrospect and the future, a 3-1 count might be a better time to try that.
  21. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 31, 2007 -> 06:58 PM) It's also a good way to never see a pitcher other than Halladay. But making him throw a minimal workload coming off a near 3 week layoff is a good idea now that I think about it. His nickname is Doc. Maybe it has something to do with setting hitters up and getting them off balance. Might that be a key component of his success? His control is also a strong point...so normally if you let him throw you a pitch or two, you're looking at 0-2.
  22. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ May 31, 2007 -> 11:21 AM) Didn't one of our guys, I think it was Uribe, do exactly that in a Cubs/Sox series like 2 years ago? Uribe signaling foul ball to Derrek Lee at second base, Lee pulled up and wasn't able to advance to third, which he could have done easily. If A-Rod simply said "HAH," I don't know what the problem is. I can see an "I got it" being a little cheap, but a major league third baseman should have the concentration to block out a shout. They don't seem to have any problem tuning everyone out at a nearly empty park during batting practice.
