  1. QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Jan 25, 2006 -> 11:56 AM) YAS, I'm saying this with all the love in the world. Get a damn sense of humor. I know it was a bad joke, but just maybe I don't wanna argue with you. Then don't respond.
  2. QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Jan 25, 2006 -> 11:53 AM) Great, cause I did laundry and now I have lots of irony to do! So f***ing typical.
  3. QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Jan 25, 2006 -> 11:46 AM) I don't know, still trying to figure out yours. I was just commenting on the irony. You threw the 10 commandments out there, I threw abortion out there. Lots of irony on both parts.
  4. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jan 25, 2006 -> 11:24 AM) Mark Buehrle is not an ace. So that is justification enough for you to be rude to a newbie? Weren't you a newbie once? Have you ever been wrong about something? Besides, that is only your opinion. You know what they say about opinions ....
  5. QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Jan 25, 2006 -> 11:23 AM) I would argue that he's the strongest opponent of the death penalty. And is he pro-choice? If not, what's your point?
  6. QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Jan 25, 2006 -> 11:11 AM) Especially the Pope. What's he got to do with this?
  7. QUOTE(jphat007 @ Jan 25, 2006 -> 08:29 AM) I have watched the game for a long time. I've said many times that we can lose the division next year. We could even finish third. Everyone could get hurt, everyone could get beat up. But coming off of a year in which we won 99 games and improved the team, while Minny improved only a little and Cleveland actually got worse, there is no real reason to say they should beat us, or even hang with us. Now if I was a fan of those teams in that position I would certainly feel otherwise. They are certainly entitled to that. Hope is what makes sports fun. They have plenty of talent. That doesn't change anything. I'm not gonna sit here and slurp them because they do. I'm not an Indians or Twins fan. I'm knowledgable enough to know that they can beat us any given year, but I'm not gonna sit here and slurp them and say it every chance I get. That's for the Indians and Twins fans to do. Maybe it's just that people are trying to lower expectations and build up those two teams so they don't get themselves dissapointed if they beat us this year, which is certainly a possibility. Expect them to be awesome to soften the blow if we get beat this year. Maybe that has something to do with it. I dunno. Damn right I'm a Sox homer. They are my team. Just curious here. Define "a long time". I'm a diehard Sox fan. No ifs, ands, or buts about it and there many on here that can tell you as much. I wasn't questioning your degree of fandom. But what you so maturely call 'slurping' I call respecting your opponents.
  8. Let's see. The guy that started this thread has grand total of 7, yes 7, posts. He couldn't be creating too much of a body work that would offend too many people. Instead of bashing the newbie, why don't you politely point out the error of his ways. I don't know, maybe an email with posting suggestions would work. But no. Put the guy down to build yourself up. It's the American way. Carry on.
  9. QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Jan 25, 2006 -> 09:18 AM) I think the biggest problem with Capital Punishment is the act itself. So many of the death penalty's strongest supporters also want to see the Ten Commandments in court rooms. Yet they forget that there is no asterisk on the "Thou shalt not kill/murder" one. And so many of the death penalty's strongest opponents want us to continue killing our unborn. Ironic, isn't it?
  10. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jan 25, 2006 -> 12:17 AM) http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/americas/01/...p.ap/index.html Yeah, the Mexican government is really doing its part to help secure the border. Frankly Im sick of the Mexican government and groups within the United States helping these people commit the crime of illegally crossing the border. -I think we need a wall along our Southern border similar to the wall Isreal is building and use units of the National Guard of the affected states on a rotating basis to augment the Border Patrol. -Additionally, we need to end any and all foregin aid we give to Mexico until they take serious action to stop this. -Also, the FBI should move in and close down any groups who aid these people. They are aiding and abetting in the commission of a crime. That is illegal for those who didn't already know. Raid their offices, shut down their operations and throw their members in jail. I dont have a problem with Mexicans coming here to do certain jobs that nobody else wants but there has to be control. There has to be a way to know whos coming and going. This is an open and festering hole in our national security and its gotta get fixed......you know...like yesterday. Seems that this part gets ignored. Whodathunkit?
  11. QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ Jan 25, 2006 -> 06:51 AM) So if the union guys are too busy to picket, wouldn't they also be too busy to take on new jobs? Should people needing work done be forced to wait until the union guys finished other projects BEFORE they could start their own? :banghead If, and only if, they want want a high quality job done by skilled craftsmen. Otherwise, not so important.
  12. QUOTE(jphat007 @ Jan 25, 2006 -> 06:29 AM) Haha. The Sox have gotten better. The Indians have gotten worse. We were 14-5 against the Indians last year. Where is the disconnect? Sure, it could very well be extremely close and we can lose, but there is no real reason for that to happen. I may overrate some of the things we do about the Sox, but everybody else sure seems to slurp Minny and Cleveland an awful lot. I feel like I'm surrounded by Indian and Twin fans on this board sometimes. Actually, there are some of us the look at the competition and give them the respect they are entitled to. Watch this game long enough and you'll learn that things come together that aren't expected to come together, and things fall apart that would be the last thing you'd expect. There is some talent on those teams.
  13. QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Jan 24, 2006 -> 05:20 PM) Fine, so what's so unreasonable about asking the government to notify a secret court of its intent to wiretap or perform surveillance on US Citizens especially with organizations that were created with the purpose of foreign surveillance? What exactly is the FISA preventing here that makes it necessary to flout the law? Nobody answers this question. You are under the opinion that they are flouting the law. They are operating under the opinion that the are within the law. There's your difference. As for the use of the word unreasonable, above. I was using the word and other forms of the word 'reasonable' as it was used by the courts to define aspects of the various circumstantial interpretations of the 4th amendment. Whether it is reasonable or unreasonable to ask them to notify the secret court is not the question. The question is whether it is legal or not. Apparently, that hasn't been decided as of yet. Your opinion has been decided, certainly. But the question of the legality of the issue has not.
  14. QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 24, 2006 -> 08:23 PM) If a person looks through news stories, pulls out negative articles about Republicans, then screams liberal bias over and over again, you have the GOP PR campaign that their die hards have bought into. They have insulated themselves from criticism and that scares me. Are there cases of liberal bias? Yes. Stories are written by humans. Are there cases of conservative bias? Yes. Stories are written by humans. There is also religious bias in the media, gender bias, racial bias, and every other kind of bias. There has never been a totally bias free human. You will never be able to read a single article and not find it positive or negative to someone. With a two party system, any positive article to one party is a negative to the other party. It is impossible to add up the column inches each day and write enough positive articles to balance the negatives. During the Lewinsky junk, should the press have not written some articles until some positive could be found? If someone is screwing up the coverage will never balance. As I've said before, my view is not based on story picking. It's based on 30 years of watching and reading the MSM. There is a definite strong liberal slant in the mainstream media. I know it's just my opinion but it is not going to be changed by anything I read on Soxtalk.
  15. QUOTE(Beltin'Bill @ Jan 24, 2006 -> 10:07 PM) I was more focused on A-Row's great reads in center than his baserunning. Anderson may make us forget all the gappers that died in Rowand's mitt, but I will reserve judgement until I actually see him go after it for a few months. With or without the trophy, Aaron was a gold glover last year. Reading your previous post leads me to believe you haven't reserved judgement.
  16. Is Cleveland planning on playing 2006 without any pitching?
  17. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Jan 24, 2006 -> 03:49 PM) Are you implying that White Sox fans have a biased hatred for the Cubs? Yes. Yes I am.
  18. I agree with the majority that Red Sox pitching staff is very suspect at this point in time. I'll also go along with SSH2005's AL East prediction. That sounds about right as things stand now.
  19. As of today, Crisp is the best player involved in ... well, nothing. But, R&W is correct, imho.
  20. Sorry fellas .. I have to get some sleep. I 'll look at the past few posts tonight. Have a good day.
  21. QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Jan 24, 2006 -> 03:11 PM) Let me just take this. Here's a good example of the absurd rhetoric used when Democrats do forward new ideas. Democratic idea -- 'Allow the tax cuts on the rich to lapse.' The response, 'Communists!', is demagoguery. Look through my whole history of posting here. There aren't many posters that are more pro-free market. But there are many situations in which the free market should, in theory, be a BAD arrangement. First, just in terms of efficiency (pollution being the textbook example), and second, in terms of equity. Free markets could very well lead to some people being very rich, while others die of starvation. So I could equallly well go to the extreme, like you did, and say, 'So, let's just cut all taxes to zero, have everything laissez faire, and have a completely unfunded government. I love anarchy and starving children.' Or, I could reasonably point out that the tax cuts have led to massive deficits (nonpartisan estimates have shown that the tax cuts were an enormous contributor to the budget situation), causing the country to cut back on poverty programs and, critically, education. Education seems important -- partially because I think the government should ensure that poor children have a good chance of success. I'm pretty confident Americans agree with that sentiment -- which is why Republicans pay lip service to it with "No child left behind", and other worthless "initiatives". Democrats have ideas, but they don't appear unified (since they aren't directed by the WH, as Republicans are), and they don't get traction (since they are a minority in the Congress). It's just that they get shouted down. Meanwhile, this WH claims that it doesn't have to be evaluated on anything. 'Okay, we were wrong about WMD, but that's in the past...' Everything's 50 years ago to them. In the 6th year of this administration, we still have no improvement in schools, massive security holes at home, a booming deficit, increasing inequality, and uncertainty in Afghanistan and Iraq. It's an abysmal record for a party that has control of both the legislative and executive branches, and the only response is, 'Oh, well, the Dems aren't doing anything.' What?! The GOP controls the whole legislative process, accept the goddamned responsibility already. I'll agree with you on the deficit. That's the one area that most conversaatives have issues with Bush. Not due to too much taxation, but due to too much spending. But this: The Democrats, IF they have ideas should be taking them to the voters. IF they have something substantial to say, say it to the people. All I hear is Bush did this or Bush said that. Those aren't ideas. That's just b****ing and whining.
  22. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 24, 2006 -> 03:12 PM) Given the importance of the decision, I see no reason why delaying a few days is such a big "play". I think its prudent, if people want more time to do research. And the thing is, so far, the mudslinging by Dems has not bitten them in the ass at all. In fact, the numbers say its working. Not that I LIKE it, but that's the reality right now in terms of public opinion - the GOP is going down faster than the Dems. I'm not saying a couple of days delay will bite the Dems in the ass. I'm talking about them voting along party lines as has been requested by their leadership. I'm talking about the partisan politics displayed with the Alito hearings, after the GOP gave Ginsberg a free pass. The Dems are getting down and dirty, very dirty. It'll bite them in the ass. Mark my words.
  23. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 24, 2006 -> 03:08 PM) The courts have accepted, time and again, that the the standard for reasonableness is probably cause. That's why its referred to so often. The Bush administration decided not to pursue this in 2002 because if they lost the battle on Constitutional grounds (which someone in their circle suggested), they'd be exposing themselves by continuing the actions. That's why they dropped it - so they could continue doing it based on some other, very vague legal grounds, which are defensible (in a shifty kind of way) should it be made public. I'm listening. How did they lose in 2002?
  24. QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Jan 24, 2006 -> 02:13 PM) OK, if you want to spend the quarter million dollars worth of money it would take for me to do that research, I'm right down with it. But because the numbers released publically, don't include anything but cumulative weekly audience and overall share of audience in a timeframe, I can't get specific. What I can tell you is according to Rush Limbaugh's syndicator - during any given 15 minute time frame of his show, there are 1.2 million people listening in the top 25 markets in the US. That is not an accurate measure of nationwide listening. And, beyond that, you're right. It's not an apples to apples comparison. ABC, CBS, NBC is actual news. The Rush Limbaugh show is a three hour festival of opinions and anger. So why do you throw out Rush as an example of mainstream media?
  25. QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 24, 2006 -> 01:51 PM) A 45 second report will not make the same impact as a 3 hour discussion with a dozen people calling in and agree with and complimenting the host on how smart he is. Humans like to be part of a group, and talk radio is able to do that. Through the host, the listener can feel like he's "in on it" and part of the superior intellect. A talk show is designed to sway opinion. They bring in experts to amplify and "prove" how smart and correct the host is. Don't you agree? And to reply to another post, talk radio is able to bring followers tighter into the fold. Once the people are inside, they become more ardent followers. At first they may disagree with some points, but after hearing the points made over and over again, and by expert after expert, and hearing from all those listeners who agree, they start to agree also. In the Central Time Zone, Rush is on from 11 to 2. People get bit's and pieces as they go to and from lunch. The nightly network news has a sit down pay attention audience for 30 minutes.
