Hmmmm ... Nobody else got my match, I see.

QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 14, 2005 -> 02:57 AM) And so was Hawk. The point is that no one knew he would break out like this, and that includes Garland fans. How normal is it for a guy to only win 12 games a season with a ~4.60 ERA to all of a sudden winning 7 games early with a 2.39 ERA? Afterall, last season Garland actually regressed from his 2002 and 2003 numbers. No one knew ... but some of do believe in some of these guys. You believe they can. You don't want trade them for a bag of balls. I've always felt Garland had the talent, and it was just a matter of when.

QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 14, 2005 -> 02:55 AM) Understood, but saying "I told you so" to people who bashed Garland in the past doesn't really make much sense. Garland would crap the bed and always give up the big inning in the past. As a fan, that is really frustrating. Many people blame Jerry Manuel for Garland's lack of confidence which could very well be true. Manuel would pull Garland as soon as he gave up a run or two. Anyways, I'd like to see some posts where Garland supporters predicted he would win 18 to 20+ games THIS season which it looks like he may very well do. Even Garland supporters didn't know or probably even think that he would break out the way he has this season. Actually ... I predicted that for him LAST season. I was wrong, but whatever.

QUOTE(sox-r-us @ May 13, 2005 -> 05:33 PM) Now I am scared to even invite him here because I see there are lots of pent up emotions here You can see that my post did not include a curse filled rant toward Neyer, but personally, if he feels the way he does about the Sox and the fans, I'd prefer he didn't show up around here. Normally, guys with his attitude get booted as trolls.

QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 14, 2005 -> 02:41 AM) The funny thing is that if you are NEVER critical of any White Sox player you will never be wrong when and if they turn it around and become successful. I can be critical. But I rarely hate on guys. Navarro and Clayton are about it. There is a difference in being critical and insulting a ballplayers manhood (Judy). I try to give credit where credit is due. I point out when someone chokes or whatever without calling them a useless piece of s*** .... or Death .. or Palsy. You get the idea. I'll also wait for a young player to learn how to play MLB. I won't criticize a guy like Baj for having a couple of bad innings the first time he's called up, nor will I rant on a guy for a bad moth or two. If this game was so easy, I'd be out there making millions of bucks. It takes time. So many have NO patience whatsoever. Garland's performance prior to this year was similar to an early Curt Shilling and better than a lot of others, worse than some others. It was too early to tell how he'd turn out, but I was willing to let him mature and learn.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ May 14, 2005 -> 02:30 AM) Isn't that a wonderful stat, 20 BB's and 10 K's. And in easier terms here's what I meant before. He's got on base 40.66 times out of 107 AB's. So he's scored 18 times out of 41, that's around 45% of the time he gets on base, he scores. I'm not going on a stat hunt, but are you figuring AB's or PA's?

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ May 14, 2005 -> 12:17 AM) You know, I absolutely hate this kind of 'see, I told you so' attitude. s*** has changed. Garland was a s***ty pitcher before. He WAS arrogant, and he WAS a jerk for bashing fans, considering he is sitting here giving up 6 runs a game. And he wondered why we were b****ing. Sox fans, as a whole, want you to produce to the best of your abilities. If you do not, they will grow unhappy with you very quickly. With all that being said, Garland is a different pitcher this year from year's past. His stuff looks better. He is hitting his spots more often. He is pitching well enough to win each game...be that eating innings and giving up a few runs, or be it bearing down and giving up 2 runs in 8 innings against the best offense in baseball when your offense will only score you 3 runs. He has gone from a look of carelessness to a look of quiet confidence. His entire demeanor has changed on the mound, and you can see that, considering he already has 7 wins, more than half of the most wins he has had in any season, and the amount of wins he has had in the past 3 seasons, in just 7 starts. We were wrong. Who gives a s***? Be happy that we are wrong and be glad that we were not right. (and technically, it was not yesterday that 90% of Sox fans were calling him that, it was last year when he had an ERA of 4.80+ and was a mediocre pitcher) /rant off It's easy to say, we were wrong, who gives a s***. But I know I've been defending this guy for a couple of years now and had to put up with a lot of s*** about him on this board. So excuse me if it offends you, but I'm gonna send some s*** back your way, if you are deserving.

Gotta love that 6 game lead. People have been expecting us to falter when we start playing these better teams. So far, it's Twins stumbling.

Carlton Fisk Luis Aparicio Gary Peters Dick Allen Bill Melton Frank Thomas Robin Ventura Hoyt Wilhelm Jack McDowell Ken Berry That's 10 off the top of my head. I didn't give it all that much thought.

QUOTE(qwerty @ May 13, 2005 -> 02:48 PM) No. Garcia is the only one over .150 at .241. We should trade for Mike Hampton before the series.
-
QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 14, 2005 -> 01:40 AM) True, but that stuff doesn't matter much for the All-Star Game; offense does. Soriano is a horrible defensive 2nd baseman but do you think that will stop him from being selected? With fans, it doesn't matter. With knowledgable baseball people, like Francona, it should matter. Probably won't, but still...

I met Ed Herrmann and Rick Dempsey at a bar in Worth, IL when I was 17. This was when they were with the Yankees (Dempsey had a fro. ) Catfish Hunter was supposed to be there with them, but didn't make it. I also met the late Keith Magnuson, along with Reggie Fleming when I was a kid. That was pretty exciting for a 10 year old kid. Non-sports ... I met Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad after he performed at a local bar a few years ago. I was a big GFR fan as a teen, so that was cool.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ May 13, 2005 -> 05:34 PM) Iguchi is not an All Star over Soriano or Roberts. The stats don't lie. Actually, in this case, the stats do lie. How nmany times has Iguchi given himself up to move a runner over, or taken a hittable pitch or two to let Scotty get a read on the pitcher or steal? How many DP's has he turned because he's super quick with that glove to throwingt hand exchange? There is a lot more to playing good baseball than HR, RBI and Slugging pct.

QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ May 14, 2005 -> 01:23 AM) Kind of wrong time for this thread. There really was no media on them tonight and no one was really b****ing about anything. Eh ... There's enough media b****ing type threads throughout Soxtalk to justify this thread at any time.

QUOTE(ottawa_sox @ May 12, 2005 -> 11:51 AM) When you are faced with an important high school exam the next morning, but you stay awake until 1:30 AM with a transistor radio under your pillow in hopes of hearing Bill Melton hit a 4th homer during a west coast game. And, oh yea ... to YASNY and southsider2k5 - I've got a siamese cat named Mikita. You named your cat after a power saw?
-
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ May 14, 2005 -> 01:17 AM) Yeah I know. Unfortunately they don't really record those small things as stats, which is annoying because the Sox would be right up there on those things, so that's why I put forward BA/RISP instead, because it's probably the closest thing to it I guess. That's an example of why stats don't tell the whole story. If you looked at our offensive stats alone, you'd think we were an under .500 ball team. The media can say what they want, but this pitching, defense, speed, smartball stuff is working like a charm.

ESPN is a bunch of morons

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ May 14, 2005 -> 01:07 AM) The White Sox are hitting .237 with runners in scoring position. We have scored the American League Average in runs scored though, although this was the AVG thru game of the 11th. I'm not talking batting average with runners in scoring position. I'm talking about productive outs. Sac bunts, sac flies, hitting behind the runner, etc.
-
QUOTE(BuehrleTheAce @ May 13, 2005 -> 08:16 PM) Oh yea, big time so far. Some base runners by virtue of 4 hits and 1 walk, but as usual no one can get them over. As usual? Seems to me that we've been very good about "getting them over". That's why we are playing at .750 clip.

QUOTE(TheDybber @ May 13, 2005 -> 10:06 AM) Al Franken was right. That story was grossly one sided.

QUOTE(WilliamTell @ May 13, 2005 -> 10:10 AM) I love seeing Rowand bat 3rd. I would not put Rowand at the 9th spot, he's coming around. He'd lose an at bat a game basically there. My lineup would be: Podsednik Iguchi Rowand Everett Konerko Dye Pierzinski Crede Uribe Just moving them back from 4 and 5 to 5 and 6. If that doesn't work, then bring in someone off the bench. You got it. That's the line up I'd go with as of the moment.

Matt Karchner is the head baseball coach for a little college ... somewhere. I forget where.

QUOTE(Soxnbears01 @ May 13, 2005 -> 10:38 AM) I can foresee an AJ/Zambrano moment on friday. Wait till AJ sees the atmosphere of those two series. He ain't seen nothin' yet.

The runner was off balance because he was trying to regain his feet after slipping. I don't think it took much of a "shove" to knock him down. In other words, it was just one of those things that happen in baseball.
