  1. QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 08:16 PM) In fact I would go as far as to say that obp is one of the more overrated stats. Elaborate, please.
  2. QUOTE(Hall of Famer @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 08:05 PM) I don't think so. I mean, Pod's SBs are just like adding on 70 doubles onto his stats. SB's automatically put you into scoring position. More of a lost art, IMO. It's a lost art because teams don't do it much any more. There's are reasons for that. One of which being is that it takes about an 85% success rate to make it worth your while, in general. With the long ball so prevelent in toiday's game, it's not worth the risk. Now, I'm speaking in general terms here. There is a time and a place for everything.
  3. Let's not let this get out of control guys. Please.
  4. QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 07:39 PM) This should be entertaining, someone tell me why a foreign country is being judged by whether or not they carry Fox News? Y'all are joking right? Are they also in trouble if they don't carry the Food Network and MTV? Y'all? I never said a word about whether or not they carried Fox News. But, since they have opened the door, now the CBC is s***ting bricks.
  5. QUOTE(Melissa1334 @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 07:54 PM) hey, how do u add pictures? i noticed everyone has pix under their user name and everytime they 'reply' how can i add them? On the top of the page click on "My Controls" .... then click on "edit signature". That will get you pointed in the right direction
  6. The stolen base is one of the most overrated stats in all of baseball. Give me the OBP any day.
  7. Let me get the straight. The CBC airs a left wing show blasting Fox News and O'Reilly responds to it. Who fired the first shot? The CBC is afraid Fox News is going to make them even more irrelevent than they already are. To quote that master wordsmith Nuke_Cleveland, "f*** them".
  8. I believe anything KW does from this point through spring training will be minor and won't effectively grab headlines anyway. But, you never know with this guy. Welcome to Soxtalk.
  9. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 02:13 PM) A source told the Chicago Tribune that the Cubs were close to signing Jeromy Burnitz to replace Sammy Sosa in right field. If that's the case, then the Cubs are clearly a worse team than they were yesterday. Jerry Hairston Jr. can be an asset, but he probably won't be used at second base over Todd Walker and he's not a good enough hitter to be a quality left fielder. Roto This is definitely and "addition by subtraction" type deal. The Cubs are better without Sosa than with him. He's been their problem for the past 6 years. Ever since the Cubs front office did not stand behind Don Baylor in that first spring training flap he had with Sosa, Sammy's been a hindrance to any chance the Cubs had at winning.
  10. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 02:04 PM) I could care less what they did at Charlotte to be quite honest. The thing that scares me about Diaz is that he is a two pitch pitcher, and neither one of his pitches are that great. I like haveing Grilli around JIC. I agree 100%. Grilli didn't perform well last year, but the guy has some raw talent. Again, I'd like to see what he can do when completely healthy.
  11. Jackson was a decent pitcher in his day. Unfortunately, that day came and went before 2004.
  12. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 05:00 PM) They got a long way to go. They are also doing it the right way. In my opinion, the Tigers are the one team that taking this gamble with Ordonez makes any sense. They are pushing by going 5 years. Three would be perfect, but I guess it's not possible.
  13. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 12:57 PM) If Maggs is healthy, the Tigers have their face of the organization locked up for 5 years. If not, they took a big risk and came up short; thus, the nature of the Detroit Tigers. If you want big namem players to come to Detroit, you have to either sign them to stupid contracts, or catch them on the downside of their career. Do not underestimate the Detroit Tigers. I know they have sucked for as long as some of you can remember. But, this is a once-proud franchise that is working it's way back to being a proud franchise again. Trammal, Gibson and Parish are running the show over there now and if you saw how these guys played the game, you'd know the Tigers will be back. And they will. Book it.
  14. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 10:49 AM) From everything I've heard, he's still got a s***ty attitude. He may say the right things to the press, but if he's walking around the clubhouse with a snickerpuss and a lousy attitude, he's won't benefit this club at all. If I'm Kenny, I still trade this s***head for either a utility infielder or some pitching prospects. Harris still has nice trade value. If Kenny looks hard enough, I'm sure he can find a team willing to overpay for the "starting 2B of the future." Ship him out. When it's all said and done, I think that will be the net result. I don't think Harris will be on the opening day roster.
  15. QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 09:44 AM) Actually, sources close to me, tell me, that this was Boras' plan, and three teams are studying the plan while being mesmerized by highlight reels of Maggs before the injury. Boras's plan? Well hell! That explains everything!
  16. QUOTE(beck72 @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 10:20 AM) I'd bet that Harris goes to ST on his best behavior. Then he does or says something stupid that shows he's not suited for a bench role I think you've hit the nail right on the head. Willie can't help but being Willie.
  17. QUOTE(chi-guy2 @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 09:18 AM) all of the outfielders left to get are not to good and Maggs will most likely be a tiger, Burnitz isn't a consistent hitter at all and hes really old, don't know why the cubs would want him nor do i care Just wait and see what that Cubbie outfield looks like come opening day. It won't be anything to laugh at, I guaran-damn-tee it.
  18. QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 09:54 AM) There are teams that year after year have zero hope of ever smelling post season play. There are a more teams that have almost no hope of ever winning a World Series. I would rather Baseball have some salary min/max system in place. I agree wholeheartedly. Thinking about it here, if these other teams didn't step up and overpay these mediocre question marks, the Yankees would be able to get anybody they wanted to get. They are damn close to being able to that now. But, not entirely. The only way to resolve this problem is with a hard cap. However, we will never see it. It's "good for baseball" for the Yankees to be the big dog. Kansas City has no chance to fill their ballpark unless the Yankees are in town. We all say, if there was a winning team on the field, the park would be full. Let's look at Sox. If they payed whatever it took to sign Delgado, Beltran and Pedro this year .... hey great! Then Minnesota with their billionaire owner, took the same stance and signed Magglio, Nomar and Matt Clement ... or whoever ... where does it stop? What's the guarantee that the Sox would win the division. Pedro loses his fastball, Delgado's a bust and Beltran gets injured and we end up in 4th place with piss poor attendance ... then what? That's what these teams have to think about when they are dealing with these guys. Something needs to change. I don't know what the answer is. Do you? Does anyone?
  19. Gotta be Blackhawks. No ifs, ands or buts.
  20. QUOTE(beck72 @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 09:51 AM) The sox would be hard pressed to find a UTL IFer who has Harris' talent and upside. But talent isn't everything, esp. for a bench guy. Does Willie have the humility, lack of ego, and ability to cheer on his teammates? Doesn't seem like it. He could very well sit on the bench and be an ass. If this is the case, then the sox could do w/o him, talent and all. My guess is the Sox will give him the chance to prove he can be a UTL guy, and not the brash talking guy w/ a big ego. That is the big question. Would Willie be an asset ... or an ass?
  21. QUOTE(backman @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 07:09 AM) is any sox fan watching this trade develope, and just sitting there grinning/trying to keep self from bursting out laughing? they trading away sosa for a second basemen? ( can he play right?) and two minor leagures. cubs outfeild: left: dubois center: patterson right: hollansworth. this is great without sosa they lookse the presance that he carried with him, much like frank does with the sox,the presence of thought that this guy could be down 0-2 and then smack one of the longest homers you've ever seen, and now he gone on the northside (pending a physical), and i get the idea that this could be a real good year. You need a dose of reality if you think Hendry is going to open the season with that outfield. Once the Sosa trade is done, Hendry will start his own flurry of activity. Book it.
  22. QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 03:45 AM) LOL, May I bring a can of spam to this welcome party? I think you just did.
  23. QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 03:47 AM) I gotta love a guy who googles accordian players, strippers, and Tigers. I'm guessing this had something to do with Maggs? Ilitch has a plan to put accordian players in the Winsdor Ontario strip clubs and tie in a special night for stippers and accordian player at Comerica. This is all a plot to pull in the Canadien market so they can increase attendance and therefore afford Boras' demands for Magglio. I think it will work.
  24. QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 03:38 AM) Greedy team, where's the loyalty after he saved baseball and put them on the edge of a World Series. Touche'
  25. QUOTE(knightni @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 02:50 AM) John Wayne> The Shootist Ron Howard>Night Shift Michael Keaton>Batman Jack Nicholson>About Schmidt Kathy Bates>Rat Race Wayne Knight>Space Jam Daffy Duck I knew someone would take that one. LOL Good job.
