QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Jan 6, 2005 -> 11:58 AM) Noone objects to Brit, Finn, Aussie, etc, and Jew isn't even a shortening. If you don't believe me, just look it up in a dictionary. The online m-w.com says that "Jap" is "usually disparaging", no such mention for "Aussie". If it's offensive, AND "JAP" IS OFFENSIVE, it shouldn't be tolerated. Whatever.

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Jan 6, 2005 -> 11:52 AM) If you're insinuating something by "curious", it's bs. I don't use terms like that, I never have, and I've argued against them before (eg before the election in SLaP, iirc). Everyone already jumped all over the "trailer trash" comment -- mission accomplished, I don't have anything to add. But in doing so they ended up defending the use of "jap", which is unacceptable imo. I thought it hadn't been made clear, so there was still something worth saying. That's why I "picked" that one. I'm not insinuating anything. I pretty much stated that one example could written off as an abbreviation without malice and the other remark remark was purely intended to be malicious. Just the fact that you chose to pick the questionable remark over the obvious malicious remark made me "curious" (not acuusatory, just curious) as to why you made the choice you did.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 6, 2005 -> 11:47 AM) On paper the pitching staff looks better at just about every spot. The hitting has lost a lot of power, but has picked up a ton of speed. It will be interesting to see how those two offensive factors balance out. You have to take into consideration our potentially drastically improved pitching staff. That is part of the benefit we are receiving for the cut back on sluggers.

Brit. Arab. Jew. Finn. Swede. ...... There's nothing offensive about those terms if they are not used in an inappropriate way. Just because the we used the term "Jap" when we were at war with them does not make it offensive. I hate "political correctness" ... it's taking this country right down the tubes.

Did this moron not know what Fear Factor was all about? I have watched maybe 2 minutes of that disgusting piece of s*** show since it hit the air ... and I know not to watch it. It's really a simple solution to the problem.

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Jan 6, 2005 -> 11:37 AM) I agree that "trailer trash" is offensive, but that doesn't make the first remark acceptable. I'll go along with that. In and of itself, it's not. But considering that the first remark may have been just laziness and the other was clearly meant as an offensive remark, I find it curious that you picked the one that may not have been intended as a slur.

QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Jan 6, 2005 -> 11:33 AM) That is why KW needs to forget Iguchi and just sign AJ. Offer A.J. 3 million and then shoot for Cora, he'll come cheaper than Iguchi. Cora is a slow Willie Harris.

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Jan 6, 2005 -> 11:30 AM) I don't buy this as an answer to what qwerty is saying. If the White Sox believe there's an attitude problem that would hurt the clubhouse (not hard to believe), they wouldn't offer him any contract whatsoever. A cheap clubhouse "cancer" is no less destructive than an expensive one. Based on the fact that they offered him a contract, I'm assuming that they think he won't be a problem. Which still leaves the question of why the hard upper limit of $2 mil, if the Sox stick to it and don't sign him. Btw, I want to add, I feel strongly that "jap" shouldn't be tolerated. Maybe he meant it as a shortened version of "Japanese", but historically it IS a racist term. If he didn't know that, fine, just as long as it doesn't keep happening. So many people jumped to defend this use, and I just hope noone finishes this thread with the idea that it's okay to use that term. A cheap clubhouse cancer may be even worse than a well paid one. He may be bitter about his current circumstances. As for the "Jap" thing .... I think the "trailer trash" remark was even more offensive. There was no doubt about the intent of that remark, but the Jap remark could possibly be attributed to pure laziness.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 6, 2005 -> 11:23 AM) That right there sells me on him. He won with crap. And right now the Bears have a whole lot of crap. LOL .... Super Bowl ... here we come!!!!!!!!!!

QUOTE(knightni @ Jan 6, 2005 -> 11:17 AM) To the Sox: Nitpickers! Give AJ and Iguchi what they ask for and move on. An extra 1.6 mill over 2 years won't kill you. I'm having recurring flashbacks of 2003 .... We offered Kenny Rogers one million, the Twins offered him two million. That was difference folks. In a nutshell, we lost the 2003 AL Central division championship over a million bucks.
-
They need to give Iguchi what he wants ... $2.3 per for two years. Step up and offer AJ $2.3 also ... He'll take it. And one more thing KW .... offer me $300K per year as a consultant and I'll take it!

QUOTE(mreye @ Jan 6, 2005 -> 10:56 AM) Just a question. Not trying to spark an arguement. Do you really think the Dems are doing well in Illinois, or is it that George Ryan so screwed the GOP that people want nothing to do with the Republicans? Considering the GOP ran ANOTHER governor candidate nameds Ryan, and had to "import" a candidate for the senate, I'd say the Illinois GOP is so screwed up that there is only one effective political party in Illinois.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 6, 2005 -> 09:30 AM) Dems to Force Election Result Debate I still find it troubling that we have Dems and GOPs in charge of elections. It seems that there needs to be a non-partisan or at least a balanced process in place. Does it really make sense that the head of a party's campaign should be in charge of the election? You don't think they'd let someone else control that, do you?

QUOTE(SoxFan562004 @ Jan 6, 2005 -> 09:19 AM) Was he the OC when Erik Kramer broke all the franchise records? I don't think that was Crowton (SP? I mean the former BYU coach)... That was Turner.

QUOTE(SoxFan562004 @ Jan 6, 2005 -> 08:48 AM) Tigers Not unless their GM is putting up a smoke screen. In one of yesterday's Detroit newspapers he said there was nothing going on.

QUOTE(beck72 @ Jan 6, 2005 -> 06:47 AM) I'm talking about 2005 salaries. What happens in 2006 is another matter, but workable. the sox have few position players locked up [Dye, Uribe, Pods] and have room to get guys under contract. But the first two could fit, [$5 mill total] and Rowand could sign a Uribe type deal, between $2-3 mill for 2005. If the Sox go to ARB w/ Aaron, he could get a raise prob. close to $2 mill. I was also talking about 2005 salaries.
-
QUOTE(beck72 @ Jan 6, 2005 -> 06:19 AM) With that $3-8 mill, Iguchi [$2 mill], AJ [$3 mill] and an extension for rowand [$3 mill] could plausibly fit. I don't think he can sign Iguchi, AJP and Rowand for $8 million total, unless he gives them all substantial guarenteed raises in '06.
-
That was my original thought, too. I can see me being to lazy to type Japanese and abbreviating it to "Jap".

Let's see .... Cubs, Astros, Mets and Yankees. That's 4 teams and there is supposed to be 5. Kenny Williams flying under the radar again?

QUOTE(KittleWalk83 @ Jan 6, 2005 -> 03:37 AM) When are you going to take down the Xmas lights from your trailer? Don't use a racist term. You trailer trash. Your remark is just as discriminatory as his.

I don't claim any party affiliations other than US citizen. I believe in the GOP stance that gov't works better on the local level. I also believe that the unions need to regain their power base. I hate the fact that the House-Senate-White House are all controlled by the same party. I believe our judicial system needs to swing back to conservatism, but at this point in time that is dangerous with the GOP contolling all other branches of federal gov't. I vehemently distrust both major political parties and don't think either one has the best interests of the US and her citizens at heart. They have the best interests of the party at heart. We NEED a strong moderate ticket to run in '08. I'd bust my ass to get a McCain-Leiberman ticket elected.

The above is from the USA Today. New ownership in Oakland could prove to be interesting as far as Beane goes. Is he a good GM that can win with adequate payroll or is he just adept at flying by the seat of his pants?

I found this to be interesting. I take it as a sign the Astros are resigned to the fact that Beltran is gone.
