I'm all for us having a 20 game lead at the trade deadline. I just don't consider 5 out on July 31st an "illusion of contention". I used an example to reinforce my point. Things can go either way from that point in time, but under that criteria, a team is still in the picture.

Walker's bat is a good fit for the Sox, but with the Cell turning into Coors East, we don't need the extra baserunners and lost outs that his glove, or lack thereof, would supply.

Actually, the mediocrity of the division might be a very good selling point. We play 19 games against each team and Johnson is wanting to reach that 300 win plateau.

Even with all that ... He's a .500 double digit win pitcher with a 4.60 ERA and pitches 200+ innings a year. That's worth the money, because decent pitchers are hard to find. Plus ... the fact that he's only 25 is nothing but a positive. He will get better. Check out Schilling, Johnson, Kevin Brown at the same age or length of service.

Why couldn't KW see that Koch was going to lose 7 mph of his fastball during spring training of '03? Looking back at it, sure, it seems like a dumb move. At the time, Koch was the reigning AL Rolaids Reliever. Where are all these great prospects today?

I saw a lot of negative posts about the Flash pick up when it happened. Too old, injury prone, etc. It turned out very well for the Sox. Mantei's worth a shot.
