I was flipping around the other day and happened to catch this/her story on Hardball. It's pretty amazing, and she should be very proud of herself.

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Mar 28, 2009 -> 12:23 AM) No. The 3 division winners get the Top 3 seeds. Then 4-8 get seeded by the most points. Hmm ok. Does hockey re-seed each round though, and could you get home ice against a team with a better "seed" than you if you have more points than them? -

QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Mar 27, 2009 -> 05:40 PM) Because World Pride should always take a backseat to National Pride. Riiiiiiiiiight... Bud actually has it right. The best players should be mandated to play unless in the event of an injury. It's not like these guys are playing 20 games, and it's not like the pitchers are throwing 50IP+. What he's stating is that the US has a hard time of representation because the best players are afraid of 20 plate appearances they normally would've been getting in ST or 6 innings of pitching which is undoubtedly less than what they would pitch in ST. I don't doubt for a second that the guys actually there were trying their hardest as Matt Thornton said. The problem that's there is that the players and owners value their franchises more than international competition. Huh? These players are paid (a lot) by their TEAMS, and they owe all of their attention and effort to their teams. They don't owe a damn thing to Bud Selig and some stupid ass event he made up a few years ago. That's just ridiculous, but some people will always buy the national pride stuff I guess. National pride is being proud of where you live and where you come from and what it represents, not playing some preseason games when you aren't even in playing shape yet. I guess Japan and Korea should be proud they beat up on a bunch of teams full of guys not in playing shape yet though. -

What happens if the Hawks finish ahead of Calgary AND Vancouver, and thus whoever wins that division? Can they move into 3rd? I'm not an expert on hockey postseason procedure. -
QUOTE (Sonik22 @ Mar 22, 2009 -> 01:03 PM) This is so true. He reminds me of those monsters. I'm not drunk, but I have to third this one. My friends and I have talked about it, and Blake Griffin is definitely one of the Monstars. We agreed he's most likely the green one:

QUOTE (gbuk @ Mar 19, 2009 -> 12:16 AM) The "rumblings" you hear of come from message boards, made up sources, boosters who don't matter, and others (like Seth Davis) who want to get hits off of writing negatively about Kentucky (who can blame him?). But from the people who actually matter and actually have info in the program and have proven it, have stated all along he's going nowhere and there's not even a thought about it. Barnhart knows that Gillispie needs more time (3rd year is when you can start judging) and knows that if he fires the biggest name he's ever hired his job will be in question. Doesn't help that there is a 6 million dollar buyout. Not to mention the fact that Gillispie getting fired would be a death sentence to this program. I have my doubts about what he does, but there's no way you can judge based off of these two years, no way. Don't let any Kentucky fan (mainly from Catspause) tell you otherwise. The fanbase as a whole is generally uninformed and hasn't a clue that college basketball has changed since Pitino left. Nice call, dude. If you want to come here and pretend to be smarter than the rest of us, don't post something that is completely wrong. It will be interesting to see who Kentucky hires next though. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 27, 2009 -> 12:54 PM) He could just as easily go the Joakim Noah route and cost himself millions by exposing himself as not that good. Exactly, and even if he improves, next year's draft class is much better than the epically awful one this year, and thus his stock still might not improve. Plus, Mullens' family is poor, as everybody knows. But don't let logic get in the way of a smitten fan. -

QUOTE (The Critic @ Mar 26, 2009 -> 08:44 AM) It was a decent win, and any 2 points are beautiful at this stage, but they didn't play very well in the 2nd or 3rd periods. How Dave Bolland wasn't one of last night's stars is beyond me. I know Toews had an "accidental" goal and a shootout goal, but the entire Havlat/Ladd/Bolland line were the 3 stars IMO. The Hakws can't afford to look past NJ, but Sunday's game vs Vancouver is huge. They definitely didn't play well in the 2nd and 3rd periods, and more specifically, the two goals allowed in the 3rd period were BOTH inexcuseable defense play by the Hawks. But two points this late in the year is huge, especially against a team as good as San Jose. Hopefully the Hawks can get a regulation win against Vancouver. -

What a huge win to get 2 points against San Jose, and to do it in a shootout to boot. -
QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 12:44 PM) I grew up in Beverly, and most of my family is still there. My brother lives on 101st and Oakley and his house is ground zero for the parade before- and after parties. The last few years, everybody has been amazed the plug hasn't already been pulled. A half-million people and no public bathrooms, lots of underage intoxication and all of the liability associated with it, most of the attendees driving in from the north side, and using the neighborhood as a urinal. . . etc, etc. Maybe the event just got too big for its own good. Sad to see it go, but I can understand it. I can't argue with any of this, and although I'm not Irish or from the Southside, it's still sad to see the parade go. Although lots of underage intoxication and lack of public bathrooms is a problem that many events have.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 24, 2009 -> 05:23 PM) This seems like a mistake of epic proportions to me. A team that consistently gets the smallest crowds in baseball by a long shot, and in this economy, you are going to put Miami-Dade into hundreds of millions of dollars in new debt? When that city claims it can't pay for things like schools and roads? That's where they want to spend money - on a franchise that as a business is a failure? If I were a voter down there, I would be livid. This is just an epic fail. After a couple honeymoon years, they'll be empty again anyway. I love baseball, but I think its been shown clearly that the Miami-Dade area can't support a baseball team right now. I agree with everything you said, including the fact I'd be livid as a voter down there, until the bolded. First off, Dolphins Stadium is a dump and horrible for baseball. Second of all, it's in an awful neighborhood. Little Havana isn't exactly a great area, but I would argue that the area surrounding Dolphins Stadium (once you get past the parking lots and highways) is definitely worse. Lastly is the bolded. The current stadium they play in is up near the county line with Broward, whereas the new one will be much closer to Miami itself. The people nearest the current stadium are a combination of those who can't afford to go to the games and live in bad to awful areas, and the very rich, very white people, many of whom are carpetbaggers from the northeast and midwest and thus have teams they are fans of from their old hood and don't care about the Marlins. The population nearer the new stadium is more blue collar and more hispanic, and I think more of them will attract to Marlins games. The Marlins are never going to lead the league in attendance as fan support in Miami isn't exactly great. But I think a much nicer and newer stadium in Miami with a retractable roof (which is really important, it rains at 4 or 5 down there almost everyday during the summer and is hot and humid, not great weather to watch or play baseball in) can help the Marlins at least increase their attendance numbers to respectable averages in the long term. If I am wrong, well then they will eventually have to move, but that's a long way off now that they have their new stadium deal in place. And it's not rumor btw, it's fact they'll become the Miami Marlins when they move into this stadium (sorry chimpy.)

Leadoff/2nd hitter in lineup discussion
whitesoxfan101 replied to SouthsideDon48's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I cannot stand the idea of platooning the leadoff spot, especially considering Getz will put up similar numbers to the platoon we're talking about in Anderson and Wise anyways. I know we don't want to put pressure on Chris, but this isn't a perfect situation and I just wish we'd give him the keys and let Alexei hit 2nd (like somebody else said, this is the AL and he'll get his RBI chances no matter where he hits.) -

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 24, 2009 -> 12:07 PM) Sooo. Evan Turner said he is coming back to OSU next year. I'll believe it when i see it, but it would be nice to have the top conference player back in the fold. With Turner and Buford, we should contend. Im 100 percent sure Mullens is jumping to the NBA for a career of reserve minutes. Turner has a tough decision, because he will become a better player if he stays another year or two at Ohio State so it would be a good decision in that sense, but it would probably be a bad financial decision because he won't go as high in either of the next two drafts simply because this draft class is so incredibly bad. Buford in theory is in the same position, although he was only a freshman this year he would have more room for improvement. I believe both are projected as consensus first round picks in 2010 anyways though, so maybe the decision isn't as hard as I think it is. -

QUOTE (Brian @ Mar 22, 2009 -> 03:09 PM) What a garbage article. The whole team was down in the dumps when they were down 17. I was at center court and saw it. Richmond helped fuel the comeback. He tried getting to the hole, got to the line a bunch of times, and was down low trying to rebound and block shots like always. I'm guessing the guy has seen Richmond play once, maybe twice. I saw him play about 10 times this year and some people mistake his demeanor for laziness, I thought the same thing last year. He turned it around big time this year. His demeanor when they were down 17 was the same look he had dribbling up before hitting a 40 foot jumper to win the sectional. Again, I was saying last year that Richmond was so overrated, but this year he has developed a jump shot. Both 3 point range and mid range. If a group of Illinois basketball players saved some kids from a burning bus, fathom would probably find a way to be critical of them, so keep that in mind. -
I could never root for Wisconsin due to their style. I understand that a lot of Big 10 teams play this abominable style of running shot clock and not scoring points, but they take it to an extreme. I felt dirty rooting for Illinois at times this year even with as much as I've always liked them because of how slow and ugly they played to be honest, it's just terrible to watch and now how the game is meant to be played in my opinion.

I like it, nicely played KW, Rick Hahn, and Jerry Reinsdorf.

QUOTE (fathom @ Mar 22, 2009 -> 01:03 PM) Very entertaining basketball at the IHSA championships. Marcus Jordan actually played superb basketball. As for Richmond...I know I'm biased, but he has the worst body language of any high recruit I've seen on a basketball court. This article basically sums it up: http://www.pjstar.com/sports/x599207872/No...ose-their-heads He's obviously spoiled and realizes how good he is, I won't argue that. He probably will also only be at Illinois only one year as well, two tops. I think he's worth the "hassle" though, if you want to call it that, because he's an amazing talent. -
Good Lord... (Stephen Strasburg)
whitesoxfan101 replied to Kenny Hates Prospects's topic in The Diamond Club
I remember watching the Olympic baseball games online, and more specifically seeing this guy pitch, and even on just my computer screen, his stuff really stood out and jumped out at you. I would think he has to be the #1 draft pick. Didn't Washington offer Mark Texiera a ton of money? I would think if they are willing to do that, they'll pay the ranson to make Strasburg a part of their organization. -
QUOTE (BearSox @ Mar 21, 2009 -> 09:55 PM) Hopefully... 1. Getz, 2B (he's gonna have to be a full time starter, vs. lefty and righty. I'll be pissed if we see Ozzie do a dumbass thing and bat BA or Fields leadoff vs. lefties) 2. Ramirez, SS (Ozzie better not make us go through another year with Pierzynski in the 2 hole) 3. Quentin, LF 4. Dye, RF 5. Thome, DH 6. Konerko, 1B 7. Pierzynski, C 8. Fields, 3B 9. Anderson, CF I'm not expecting much out of Getz his rookie year, but I know he's a hell of a lot better than either Wise or Owens. I am somewhat surprised to be saying this, but I completely agree with you. That would be my lineup as well, although knowing Ozzie, even if he tried something like this, he might switch Dye and Thome so that you won't have 3 righties in a row at any point in the lineup.

The early 4th quarter last night was as painful to watch as it gets, as the Bulls starters were run off the floor in pathetic fashion by the Lakers bench. It's one thing to get beat by Kobe, but they should be ashamed for what happened last night, as Los Angeles made a 21-6 run with 4 bench players on the floor and Kobe on the bench. -

QUOTE (BearSox @ Mar 18, 2009 -> 09:12 PM) I still believe that it is an extreme amount of bad luck that has ruined Prior. I especially don't believe that his mechanics were too perfect. Prior has AWFUL mechanics. People like Steve Stone have been saying this for a long time, and it's no surprise he's had the injury problems that he has. QUOTE (The Critic @ Mar 20, 2009 -> 10:47 AM) Quote from this story: "In 2003, Prior felt no pain. He starred as a rookie and finished behind a juiced Eric Gagne for the NL Cy Young award. He had pitched a shutout in Game 6 of the NLCS until the eighth inning, when Steve Bartman rendered the first seven meaningless." Another lazy writer scapegoating the poor sap because it's a shorter, easier thing to write than it would be to place the blame where it belongs. Yep, it should say "when Alex Gonzalez rendered the first seven meaningless."

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 19, 2009 -> 02:52 PM) 7 minutes to go up 4 and not one part of you thought they had a chance to pull it off? I agree with him, there was no point at which I thought Memphis would lose that game, and I have them going out earlier than most poeple in this tournament (in the sweet 16). You aren't going to lose to a 15 seed when some backup guy like Roburt Sallie puts up 35 points and 10 three pointers. They should thank their lucky stars he picked yesterday to have the best game of his life though, because they lose without it obviously.
-
It was a pretty deplorable effort by Illinois, they showed no effort on defense for the vast majority of the game, and you can't beat anybody, not even a Sun Belt team, doing that. At the same time, Illinois isn't the same on defense without Chet and in reality probably wouldn't have been able to handle Gonzaga's firepower without him anyways, plus this was a very flawed team that overachieved in the first place. The excitement starts next year and continues in the years coming in the future with the recruiting going as well as it is though. And congrats to Michigan, I didn't think they had a chance in hell at beating Clemson, but they played a fantastic game. QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Mar 19, 2009 -> 11:07 PM) I am really starting to hate McCamey. Hard to like a guy who has a ton of talent and shows no desire to make himself great and gives no effort on D. Demetri reminds me a lot of Frank Williams in this sense. I don't think he's ever going to be as good as Frank, but he's similar in the sense that he's very talented, puts up some fantastic performances in games, but also has games where he simply doesn't appear to have his head in the game. I never agreed with the people who said Frank didn't care, and I don't agree with the people who say Demetri doesn't care either, but I can see how you can gather such an opinion when players like them can look so good at times, and so absolutely useless at other times.

This is such a soft region IMO. If Pitt doesn't make the final four this year, they might never do it.
