QUOTE (knightni @ Jan 22, 2009 -> 05:38 PM) That's nothing, I'm allergic to the Cubs. They make my skin crawl. I almost put the Cubs because it fit the description, but I thought that would be too obvious though. I am with you though on this. To be honest, I say a lot of stupid crap and claim to hate things at times when angry. However the Cubs are perhaps the only thing on earth that I can honestly say I legitimately hate.

QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Jan 22, 2009 -> 04:25 PM) The top of the MVC isn't the best it has been, but the bottom is the best I can remember in a while. There is a lot of talent in this league. Wichita beating both ISU and Creighton shows that to me. Hard to get road wins in this league. ISU is still best in state. There seems to be talent, but very YOUNG talent, at least by what I have gathered. I still think SIU might end up winning Arch Madness, they have the best talent, but they have a weird mix of parts. They seem to finally be figuring out how to use those parts though. Illinois State, Creighton, Bradley, maybe Drake, and the leaders from Nothern Iowa are all threats as well though. The Valley is definitely wide open, but I think it's more a case of mediocrity than it is parity. -

QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Jan 22, 2009 -> 12:32 AM) The MVC is stacked this year. I don't care what the national pundits say. It is good from top to bottom. 16-3. Pretty solid record still. So Illinois State is the best team in Illinois and the MVC is stacked? Wow.... -

Interesting to see David Palmer lighting it up for Iowa tonight. I remember him being a verbal commit to Illinois way back during Bruce Weber's first year, then he had to go to prep school, then Seton Hall for a year, eventually had to transfer and use a redshirt year, and now he's at Iowa and had a big night tonight. -

QUOTE (DonkeyKongerko @ Jan 21, 2009 -> 07:46 PM) Now watch them lose to IU or something. Nobody in the Big 10 is THAT bad (at least not this year, Crean will get the ship righted there pretty fast). But yeah, who had Northwestern at Michigan State AND Virginia Tech at Wake Forest tonight? Wow. -
Obama Presidency Prediction Thread
whitesoxfan101 replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in The Filibuster
A very safe prediction for Obama is he will be a significant upgrade over Dubya, and he will improve our standing worldwide with his charisma, oratory ability, fresh ideas, and of course, ethnicity and it's representation of how America has moved forward from a lot of (not all, but a lot of) it's past racial scars. The two big questions for me, and the ones which will define his presidency in my opinion, are national security (I mean that in a broad way, including how he handles the wars in the middle east and security on American soil) and how he does with the ecomonic mess he inherited. I don't think it's realistic to predict how either of those will go for Obama at this point, but I sure as hell hope they go well. He'll do some good things with renewable energy/the enviornment, as well as technology and job creation, but national security and the overall economy are how I think he'll be judged. -

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jan 19, 2009 -> 09:02 PM) There are two sides to that story. There is no doubt there are a ton of idiots that call in. I deal with it every day. However, without them, B&B would have a totally different show. They welcome it, because it makes for good radio(or at least in their opinion it does). Goff and Abbatacolla welcome those "Orton is God" calls. They are the ones letting them pass though the screen, getting them on air. For every smart call they let on the air, they let 5 meatball calls on.The problem is there aren't as many meatball calls as you are lead to believe, but most make the air so they can do their shtick. Well to me, the bolded makes perfect sense. It implies that 5 out of every 6 sports fans or so are dumb meatballs, and that sounds about right. I would say 95 percent of the people that post on this board are a member of the smart 1 of 6, so keep that in mind as I say this, but I think to say 83 percent of sports fans are meatballs is probably close to accurate. -

QUOTE (gbuk @ Jan 20, 2009 -> 09:26 PM) Clear enough to put in all caps? And can you give some information on why there's any reason to think it won't last? I don't think Illinois has any clear losses left. They are playing fantastic ball at home, and they already played (and almost beat) the best team in the league on the road. They will lose a couple/few more games because they have some tough road games left and still don't have the type of offense that an outstanding or elite team has, plus road games are 5 on 8 affairs in the Big Ten, but I don't see any clear losses for them left either. Also, I am AMAZED at how bad DePaul is (that is clear enough to put in caps). Jerry Wainwright is a horrid coach. -

QUOTE (Felix @ Jan 20, 2009 -> 07:48 PM) The Big Ten is a really good conference this year. It's not outstanding at the top, but it has the best depth in the country (by a mile) with the exception of the Big East, and the only reason they have the best depth is obviously because they have the extra 5 teams. I am not sure if I should be underwhemeled with Ohio State's effort tonight or impressed with Illinois', but it was a solid win for the orange and blue. An opportunity to take care of buisness and impress on national television as a newly ranked team in both polls, and they do what good teams should do at home, even against a pretty solid Ohio State team. The bad draft class could really hurt Ohio State, as a guy like Mullens (and maybe Turner) could go pro after this year, where in the case of many draft classes they would probably be more inclined to stay. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 20, 2009 -> 04:15 PM) Its really the other way around. Most people I see on here have pretty rational reasons why they voted the way they did, it seems. I never said I was even talking about anybody on this board when I posted that. I said in general, and meant it. This board is usually a rational place politically, with only a few exceptions on both sides. If Obama supporters were like most people around here, I wouldn't have a problem with them. But they're not.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 20, 2009 -> 04:08 PM) Bolded is ridiculous. His ultra-rabid supporters are like that, of course. And I think we've all seen the reels of some of the ultra-conservative McCain/Palin supporters as well, who are similarly ignorant. To lump Obama's "general" supporters in like that is just completely innacurate. Obama is inspiring to many, like him or not. So naturally, he will create more of those gung-ho types than other candidates. Further, those qualities ALSO brought a lot of new voters to the polls. But to say that the wingers in his stable are representative of his supporters in general? Absurd. Obama has a lot more of the ridiculous suppoters than anybody I've ever seen. As a college student, I can tell you that at least my campus (and I'm sure MANY others) are full of them.
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 20, 2009 -> 04:01 PM) Thanks! You have a way with words. I wasn't specifically referring to anybody, but you are welcome. One of Obama's biggest supporters is AtHomeBoy, and he's actually quite rational in terms of his expectations for Obama. It's a rarity among that group.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jan 20, 2009 -> 03:55 PM) Thats what a lot of liberals I know and see on TV dont get. When someone who did not support Obama mocks him by calling him a rock star or the messiah or anything along those lines, it isnt so much because there is a hatred towards the person Obama is, or even the policies and agenda he supports. Its the "love-fest" that has been hovering around him and that has been perpetuated by a lot of the MSM and the drooling, in your face support he has been getting everywhere you go. I signed on to facebook an hour or so ago and saw in the newsfeed probably 15-20 of my friends from college with status's like "Obama is here", "Change, change, change!", "We are saved"....i mean I get it, your guy won, but it is just ridiculous. Some of my friends truly believe he is going to fix every problem they have like a magician. I dont remember anywhere near any of this when GWB was elected the first time (its totally understandable why we never saw it the second time) Perfectly said. I find Obama to be very likable, I'm going to give him a chance and see how he goes, I am going to hope he does well, and this country NEEDS him to do well. However, i can't get myself to get fully gung ho happy about Obama being President because the MSM as well as Obama's general supporters are so stupid, so obnoxious, and so expecting miracles, that it's just sickening and hard to stomach. I actually feel kind of bad for Obama, he is expected to be the 2nd coming of Christ by his die hard supporters, and even if he does what somebody like me would consider a fantastic job, I think a lot of his suppoters will be let down to a certain degree.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 19, 2009 -> 02:32 PM) I would say that Pie isnt done yet, and has been mishandled somewhat by the Cubs. It's feasible he was a "change of scenery" guy, but he'll never be the stud, 5 tool player the Cubs told us he would be, and he just wasn't going to be able to reach his potential on the north side. The problem here isn't the Cubs trading him, it's the Cubs NOT trading him when his value was ridiculously high about 2 years ago.

I don't think he'll ever overhaul the roster (I hope he proves me wrong, but I am doubtful of it) and Uncle Jerry seems to be asleep at the wheel with firing him. It's a bad situation. -

QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Jan 19, 2009 -> 02:42 PM) Well, I think all Bulls fans are better off hoping for a trade. This upcoming draft is by far the worst one of this decade. Nobody besides Blake Griffin looks to be an impact player. I like Greg Monroe myself, but at that, I could easily see him turning into a nobody. I agree 100 percent with all of this, but hoping for a trade is a waste of time with John Paxson running the show. He seems to think all of these players are his first born and won't part with them. -

QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Jan 19, 2009 -> 02:35 PM) Not that I'm excusing a bad game, but where is the blame on the other players such as Kirk, Drew Gooden, Nocioni? When we win, it wasn't because of Gordon. When we lose, Gordon blew. What happened to we wouldn't miss a beat without him? Where are those people who say, Gordon isn't a difference maker? Rose has an excellent game, Noah has an excellent game, Gordon has a bad game(he's been in a slump), and the Bulls lose. So I guess that makes Rose and Noah non-factors? [/rant] I hope Gordon comes out of this slump because we need him in order to win. Sucks we lost to a terrible team. It was nice seeing Larry on the bench again. The Bulls as currently built cannot win without Ben Gordon's scoring. If other guys have bad games, the Bulls can still find a way to win, but if Gordon shoots poorly, the Bulls are probably going to lose. In addition, Gordon is a bit of a one trick pony (even with his improved play in others areas this year), and if his shot isn't falling, he's a noticeable liability to the team while on the floor. One thing that is clear is that this team isn't going to the playoffs or around .500 though, so it might be time to start hoping for losses and ping pong balls soon. In addition, the Bulls better bring a major scorer into the fold if Gordon leaves because as much as poeple like myself dislike Ben, the Bulls need those 18 to 22 points a game. -
QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 19, 2009 -> 10:47 AM) Considering that the Cubs are being sold this week, and the recent news of Harden's shoulder injury....and Peavy will be a Cub within 10 days. Only if the Padres are now willing to take garbage in return, because that's all the Cubs have at least in terms of what they are willing to trade.

Just keep in mind this is a game of basketball musicial chairs, and you can skip ahead to the 1:30 mark to get to the good part. The crowd/videographer reaction make the whole video for me.

It's a story as old as time: Cubs have modest prospect, hype him as great. The sheep (Cubs fans) buy it. As prospect rises, Cubs have opportunity to trade him for a great haul in return, but decline to avoid angering sheep. Prospect proves, eventually, that he's really not that good. Cubs fans turn on prospect. Cubs trade prospect for next to nothing. As for Jake Peavy, I still don't think that trade will happen, but if it does, they'll need it. Ryan Dempster is going to regress, Rich Harden is going to be hurt for large stretches, and Rich Hill is never going to be a relevant major league pitcher again. They still have an above average pitching staff, but they aren't winning the World Series with it. Plus their offense is going to have plenty of regressions this year as well. They had a GOLDEN chance to win it all last year, and blew it.

I agree it will be a better game than Vegas thinks, but the better team from the better conference will win. The Steelers should have a lot of fans there, and I think they'll get the pressure on Warner necessary to force some mistakes. There are concerns for the Steelers though, as they've had trouble running the ball all year and the Cardinals have been great against the run this postseason. Plus, Whisenhunt has all kinds of insider info he can pass along to his team about Pittsburgh. Big Ben should have a field day as long as he gets even decent protection though. McNabb put up big numbers today, and they could have been even bigger had his accuracy not betrayed him at key times. -

Coach Kill isn't messing around. We had a recruit in here this weekend who cancelled a visit to Florida (and he has an offer from the Gators) to be in DeKalb. Now I understand that he probably did this because he'd be a benchwarmer in Gainesville, and a candidate to start as a freshman here, but the symbolism of such news makes me feel good, even if this kid doesn't end up going to NIU. http://highschoolsports.nola.com/news/arti...ted-to-alabama/ -

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jan 17, 2009 -> 03:06 PM) If WSCR is smart, you dump Murph and move to snag Mac and pair him with someone. Maybe move the lineup around a bit. Murph draws good ratings (he's a dumbass Cub fan, but Chicago has many of them) and doesn't make a terribly high salary if I remember correctly, so he's not going anywhere. The Score should just can Hampton and Holmes show and make room for Danny Mac.
