  1. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 16, 2008 -> 05:24 PM) There are plenty of good coaches who come from 1-AA schools. Also there are several coordinators that are looking to move up the ranks as well. For sure. Brian Kelly is a former 1-AA and Central Michigan coach. Our coach here at NIU was a 1-AA coach and I have full faith he will do a great job here, he sure as hell did a good one this year. In fact, I worry that in the future when Bill Synder retires again, Coach Kill might get the chance to go back to his home state and take it. There are other examples I'm sure but I'm too lazy to look them up.
  2. Refs did hand them the game, but it should not have been NEARLY that close. If that were a game against a good team and they lost like that, I'd be upset, but it should not come to that against Charlotte. That's the Bulls 4th loss this year to a pathetic opponent (at Memphis, vs. Philly who was pathetic at the time, at Charlotte, at Milwaukee). I thought and still tend to think this would be a .500 team that snuck into the playoffs, but there aren't going to be enough wins on the schedule to get around 40 if you lose many more games like that. Tonight was also a SCARY example of how bad this team would be without Derrick Rose. Tonight was really his first God awful game (I can think of one other poor game he had, but not just horrible like tonight) and you saw where this team would be if he weren't around. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Dec 16, 2008 -> 06:16 PM) I went through the old NBA threads and draft threads last night, some VERY good stuff in there. There was A LOT of praise for both the Noah and Tyrus picks. Hindsight is 20/20... I get most stuff wrong, but I know I despised both of those picks. I might have TRIED to be positive about them in those past threads (doubt that even), but those were 2 rare cases of me being right.
  3. http://www.inquisitr.com/11059/elizabeth-f...texted-her-dad/ I don't even know what the believe in terms of validity online anymore, but this seems real, and it's funny as hell regardless.
  4. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Dec 16, 2008 -> 01:03 PM) Everyone who slams OC's fielding, I'll just be real interested to see how bad we still wanted him out of here ...if or when Alexei has struggles acclimating to the position at this level of play. I had no problem with OC's fielding in general. The problem that most people such as myself had is his fielding was advertised to be superb, and it really wasn't that at all. His arm strength and range were nowhere near what they were in Anaheim, Boston, and Montreal. Either that, or watching him on an everyday basis exposed some things that aren't noticeable when you only see him play a couple times a month plus the postseason in his post-Montreal days.
  5. QUOTE (Soxy @ Dec 16, 2008 -> 12:09 PM) Oh sweet pea, if you win a nobel people will be falling over themselves to give you money for your research. And labs that win Nobels are not hurting for money beforehand. Although a Heisman would certainly be much less work to win in the first place. And far less influenced by politics. Although not nearly as relevant as a nobel prize, the Heisman is influenced largely by politics. BS being spread by networks like ESPN almost won Tim Tebow a Heisman Trophy he was the 4th or 5th best candidate for this year.
  6. I have no idea what the Pellas-Ryder award is, so I voted for that.
  7. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Dec 15, 2008 -> 02:57 PM) Obama is the rat. He just doesnt want to come out and say that hes a rat because well there is a pretty big social stigma associated with ratting out other politicians. My personal opinion is that Obama gave Fitzgerald the go ahead because with out Obama's blessing this investigation goes no where. Agreed. It's MUCH better to be the rat than the criminal obviously, but with all the criminals in politics, it's not the best thing in the world to be a rat and try to get things done in that world.
  8. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 16, 2008 -> 08:56 AM) I was unaware he was ever on the list. Nobody that makes money is on the Sox list right now, sadly. The only exception is Abreu, and he's only on the list if somebody that makes money (Dye) is off the team.
  9. Great story. Hockey players are very likable for the most part, and among Gary Bettman's many mistakes, one of them is not promoting that fact enough.
  10. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 16, 2008 -> 09:12 AM) All the good happened before Steve Kerr got the GM job, I believe. Yeah Kerr has had his share of problems there. It's boom or bust for the Suns right now though, as they are a very old and very expensive team in terms of their core.
  11. QUOTE (Rex Hudler @ Dec 16, 2008 -> 07:38 AM) Maybe Patterson is looking to move on. It has been widely reported here that he wanted the Auburn job and even thought he was going to get it. The worst nightmare for Auburn fans right now is that Iowa State gets Turner Gill and he vastly improves Iowa State, while Auburn struggles under Chizik. Chizik is not a popular choicie at all here right now. I know what you are saying, but moving from Buffalo to Iowa State is a HUGE upgrade (as everybody knows obviously), so it makes a lot of sense for Gill, and it certainly makes a lot of sense for Iowa State as he's a fantastic coach. On the other hand, in terms of football programs, TCU to Iowa State is a lateral move right now, if not an outright downgrade. The only reason I would even consider it perhaps a lateral move is conference affilation. Patterson has TCU in place as a longstanding non-BCS powerhouse, and has turned down big jobs before. Perhaps he wants to move on, but he can afford to be patient and pick his spot if that is the case. As for the "worst nightmare" senario, it wouldn't surprise me at all if that happens. Gill turned Buffalo into a MAC Champion, so it wouldn't surprise me at all if he had success in the Big 12 North, even if Iowa State is a so called albatross job. Ater all, they said the same thing about Buffalo for years and look what he has done there and in a hurry. The Chizik hire is just puzzling, but then again, so was firing Tuberville. Even if Auburn didn't want to hire Gill and it was for honest, football related reasons, I would think they could have done much better than Chizik. It's a blessing for Iowa State that he was taken away, especially if they end up with somebody the quality of Gill.
  12. QUOTE (rangercal @ Dec 15, 2008 -> 11:33 PM) anyone else jumping in? I did, I think 7 or 8 people were in there when I jumped in the other day.
  13. QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Dec 15, 2008 -> 04:55 PM) You and me both. The Cub-ification of the franchise continues. Well there are millions of idiot sports fans (Cub fans) out there, especially here in the Chicago area, so if your team gets good, stuipd ass elements like that will show up. If the Bulls ever get good the same s*** will be there to deal with, although it's going to obviously be worse in the Hawks case with McDonough running the show so to speak. I just say ignore it and enjoy watching the team play, you can't control that there are a lot of people out there who make the CRITICAL mistake of being Cubs fans a life choice and then try and carry it around to other things.
  14. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Dec 16, 2008 -> 12:27 AM) Some insider info says that after ISU contacted TCU head coach Gary Patterson, he showed legitimate interest. Hard to believe, but that'd be just about the coup of the century. I don't buy that for a second (although I've been wrong before), however I do believe you guys have a shot at Turner Gill, and that would be a great get.
  15. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Dec 16, 2008 -> 12:52 AM) Remember when people were clamoring about how much Aldridge and Hawes sucked and how Thomas and Noah were much better picks? When did that happen? There were a lot of people (including myself) who were very skeptical about Hawes (and I'd still like to see a guy 7'1 shoot higher than the mid 40's percentwise from the field), but I think just about everybody agreed that Noah is garbage and trading Aldridge for Thomas was a HUGE mistake by the Bulls.
  16. QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Dec 15, 2008 -> 01:38 PM) Illinois also made a big push to try and get him to transfer after his freshman year. Now THAT part is accurate, and it was pretty low class they did that too. Not Weber's finest hour.
  17. QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Dec 15, 2008 -> 03:04 AM) He is. I'm glad the Redbirds took him away from the Illini. He has a good shot at the NBA. Well the Redbirds didn't "take him away" from Illinois, but we can pretend they did if you'd prefer.
  18. QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 14, 2008 -> 10:07 PM) Really inexcusable to have this lineup combined with our likely 4/5 of Richard and Marquez. That's all that needs to be said. I don't know if it's inexcuseable, but I do know that it's not a playoff team. We BARELY made the playoffs last season, and the team has got worse this offseason and I think the division will at least be a little better.
  19. QUOTE (lostfan @ Dec 14, 2008 -> 09:36 PM) Owens didn't "prove he couldn't cut it" as a leadoff hitter, say what you want about him not being a MLB-caliber starter, but that version of events is just not accurate. Swisher was put in the leadoff spot because he was supposed to provide solid OBP since Owens got hurt... if that didn't happen then there is a good chance Carlos Quentin starts off the year in AAA. This is all true, but the White Sox aren't in the playoffs and Carlos Quentin isn't even a starter (at least for a while) if Owens doesn't get hurt, and that's a TERRIFYING thought. You are correct Owens hasn't "proven he couldn't cut it", but I don't like his odds at proving he can if he's playing everyday for the Sox.
  20. QUOTE (rangercal @ Dec 14, 2008 -> 09:51 PM) I disagree. They went into the playoffs on a positive note last year, I think they remember the recipe for success. No way the defending champs lay down and go on a 4 game losing streak going into the playoffs. Well to each his own. I don't think it will matter to the Bears though, I'd be shocked if Atlanta wins at Minnesota next week. The Vikings defense is built to stop a team like Atlanta on offense, and Tavaris Jackson is actually playing respectable football right now (more than respectable today actually). Plus you know it'll be loud as all you know what in that dome.
  21. QUOTE (rangercal @ Dec 14, 2008 -> 09:40 PM) I knew they played, wasn't sure what the tie-breakers would be. Just seen it all lies on next week. However, Let's say the Giants lose this week and next. Would they want to go in the playoffs losing 4 straight? I bet they would show up if they lost to the 'Boys and Panthers. If the Cowboys win tonight, the Vikings are not going to get the Giants best effort in week 17 regardless of what happens next week. I know people will point towards last year and week 17, but that was a completely different senario in that the Giants were a Wild Card team at home on national TV against the mighty and undefeated Patriots, and weren't the division champs and defending world champs who knew what their seed was. And even if we make the (likely false) assumption that the Giants will give their all and play their starters all game in week 17, it's pretty clear the New York offense is nowhere near the same without Plaxico Burress.
  22. QUOTE (rangercal @ Dec 14, 2008 -> 08:10 PM) Oh... so they don't want home field in the NFC title game? hmmmm Home field in the NFC Title game will probably come down to the Giants/Panthers game next week. In fact, it will come down to that if Dallas holds on tonight.
  23. Wow the Hawks tie it at 1 with only tenths of a second left in the 2nd, and then Duncan Keith and Martin Havlat combine for the best non-individual effort goal I've seen all season to give the Hawks the lead.
  24. This might be all but over before the Bears play again. Tampa Bay is 6-0 at home and hosts San Diego next week, and Atlanta is a 3-4 road team going into red hot Minensota. Even if Dallas collapses, the only hope that might be left by the time the Bears take the field next is win out and hope Atlanta loses at home to St. Louis.
  25. QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Dec 14, 2008 -> 07:43 PM) If he really is that good, I don't really follow UIC much so I don't know, then the matchup between him and Osiris Eldridge will be one hell of a battle, as Osiris is definitely one the top non BCS guards outside of Curry. SIU fans know I'm not lying. Entering today, Mayo was shooting 51.6 percent from the field, 54 percent from three point range(!!), and just a hair under 90 percent from the free throw line at 89.7. He averages 21 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1.7 steals a game. He had 17 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds, and was 6-14 from the floor today. http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/players/47048
