  1. QUOTE (rangercal @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 10:30 AM) If it's not broke, change it anyways in order to make a bunch of extra merchandising money due a bunch of stuff with new logos on it being available. Fixed.
  2. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 12:01 AM) Ineptitude I see a lot of this in Bears games. It AMAZES me that they are 8-6.
  3. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 08:57 PM) I don't necessarily agree with everything he says but at least he makes a judgement after seeing the player as opposed to some posters judging players only through numbers without seeing them in person. The fun thing about this board is that people will rip you for having an opinion because you are not a scout, but they'll also rip you if you don't have an opinion on something. Best of both worlds I guess. I know I am not a scout, but it doesn't take a scout to recognize there is a big problem when a guy who has a scouting report that says "overwhelming stuff" has a fastball with zero movement that can't get out of the low 90's (and is at times in the mid to high 80's) and has very flat breaking stuff. And again, I have seen 3 of his major league and 1 of his minor league starts in person since mid 2007, and his stuff was almost identical in all of them. I know you can't judge one start, but you can judge four IMO.
  4. QUOTE (lostfan @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 07:08 PM) ?? before Blagojevich IL didn't have a Dem governor since 1977. Yeah Chicago is the vast majority of what the state has population wise, and the suburbs are starting to lean further left in the last decade, but the rest of this state is VERY red. A race like governor is set up well for the GOP to get some power in this state, ESPECIALLY with the Blago fiasco. Obviously, the Ryan fiasco was bad too, but this almost looks worse in the sense Blago was caught while a sitting governor, plus it's fresh on people's minds.
  5. QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 11:31 PM) Chicago connections...I've heard from people he was interested in the job when JW got it. It's a different landscape now then when JW was hired. You could have pillaged Chicago/Illinois then with Bruce's recruiting troubles, but Weber has recruited incredibly well since Jerrance Howard arrived (no coincidence), and Self still has connections here, as does Ernie Kent at Oregon and Tracy Webster at Kentucky (other Big 10 schools get players out of the area too obviously, and I'd imagine Craig Robinson will recruit here). I don't know if I think Chris Collins could recruit on a national level to the degree it would take to make DePaul relevant in the Big East either. In all honesty, I would rather see DePaul be a good team, it's healthier for college basketball in our state. I just don't know if Collins is the guy to get that job done.
  6. Why would Collins go to DePaul? I know it's a sleeping giant in that it's a Big East basketball school in a major city with a lot of tradition, but it's still a rebuilding job in the toughest basketball conference (by far) in America. That's a rough way to start the heading coaching portion of your career.
  7. QUOTE (rangercal @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 11:20 PM) Atlanta or Minnesota will lose at least 1. They play each other. True, and their other games are (Minnesota) at Arizona and vs. the Giants, and (Atlanta) vs. Tampa Bay and vs. St. Louis. I think Minnesota would be better off losing that game, because I like the odds of them losing one of those other two games more than Atlanta, plus it's better to go after the division and only have to worry about 1 team. However, both teams have a game this weekend obviously and what they do in those will determine a lot what we want to happen when Atlanta and Minnesota play. It would be nice if they both lose, and just as nice if Dallas loses at home to the Giants. That would tie the two teams in conference and overall record, and in that case I'm not sure who would have the tiebreaker.
  8. The Bears lose the tiebreakers to Atlanta, Tampa Bay, and Carolina, so even if they win out, the Wild Card chances aren't outstanding. For the Bears to make the playoffs, they need somebody to collapse. Tampa Bay has 9 wins and home games against Oakland and San Diego left, so it won't be them, and Carolina has 10 wins. Basically, the Bears need Atlanta, Dallas (they have the tiebreaker due to conference record ATM), or the Vikings to lose 2 out of 3, while the Bears win out for a playoff spot to open up. The odds are still the Bears won't get in, and they need look no further than blowing games against 3 NFC South teams if they fail to make it. Had the Bears lost tonight, I'd imagine they would have been the first team in NFL history to blow 4th quarter leads and lose to an entire division in one season.
  9. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 02:49 PM) Are you kidding me? This guy at one time was a top prospect, just like Joe Borchard. You have to ignore any bad he's had in his career. Trading a guy you can almost guarantee will hit 30 homers and drive in 90 runs for someone like this is a steal. Just look at KW's record. Every former top prospect bust he's acquired turns out like Gavin Floyd. They will teach him a cutter and he'll be unhittable. What he said. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 02:52 PM) I've been around as a sox fan long enough to know that unqualified statements like these generally make the poster look foolish. They aren't unqualified, I've seen the guy in person many times. If my statements end up wrong, they will just be wrong because I am wrong sometimes, as well we all are. My feelings on Bailey wouldn't be nearly as strong if I hadn't witnessed him pitch in person several times.
  10. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 01:42 PM) Jesse Rogers just vehemently shot down the Abreu rumors on the Score. Guesses Dye won’t go. It's WSCR, who regularly has inaccurate info. I would take it with a grain of salt.
  11. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 02:41 PM) Ahh, how I missed soxtalk hyperbole. Well of course "f***ing trash" is hyperbole, but Homer Bailey is not very good. It absolutely astonishes me that ANYBODY smart enough to be a White Sox fan would have positive thoughts about a potential deal like this one.
  12. QUOTE (klaus kinski @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 01:43 PM) We are gonna lose bailey to another deal-while Rome burns & Nero (KW) fiddles It has happened to him before-for all the kudos he gets about making deals, he also has procrastinated himself out of players he has wanted in the past Well good! Bailey is f***ing trash, so if the Sox don't get him for Dye straight up, we'll be very lucky. HOPEFULLY there is a better offer out there for Dye that we can take, and then sign Abreu.
  13. QUOTE (Texsox @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 01:29 PM) I'm heading to jail for 30 days, any suggestions? Pick fights, talk a lot, and drop the soap.
  14. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 12:57 PM) Looks like the deal is off. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20...8&fext=.jsp Of course it's off, the deal was NEVER on. This whole thing has been a bull s*** ploy by the Padres in order to try and get Peavy's value up. It's obviously not working, but that is what they are doing. The Cubs do not have the financial or personnel resources to get this deal done, regardless of what their idiot fans or idiot Cub loving reporters like Mr. Carpet Bomber Bruce Levine fasely think. Just like the Brian Roberts stuff last offseason, this whole thing has been a laughable farce.
  15. QUOTE (BearSox @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 07:45 AM) It doesn't take a f***ing genius to notice these things. I have been wrong, but I have been right a whole lot more. Think what you want, but don't f***ing insult me, or my intelligence. Why is it that you notice things better than most GM's and scouts across baseball? If I could just have one thing this Christmas, I would wish for your baseball acumen.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 11:44 AM) Was Dunn? Nope.
  17. QUOTE (Sox It To Em @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 11:38 AM) I'd much rather sign Dunn, who is younger and better, but I won't throw a fit if we sign Abreu instead. A high OBP near the top of the order was something this team greatly missed last year. Since he's reportedly good friends with Ozzie, I wouldn't be surprised if he's willing to sign with us at a slight discount. Dunn will probably (I think? who knows with this market) cost more, and the comparison I'm about to make isn't totally fair, but here goes. Dunn is the exact kind of guy that Kenny is tired of in that he hits for a ton of power, but is a horrible fielder, can't run, and hits for a low batting average. Now, he hits for a high slugging and walks a ton, so he's a better version of that kind of player than we have had here outside of Thome (he actually is pretty similar to Thome outside of the low batting average), but he's still the kind of guy KW seems tired of dealing with. Abreu, on the other hand, seems like a perfect fit for the kind of guy KW wants right now.
  18. QUOTE (The Critic @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 11:31 AM) Probably just a coincidence. I bet Nancy Grace just mentions this in passing on her show. She's not one to dwell. [there's no shade of green deep enough for that sarcasm two-fer] It amazes me how long she has managed to talk about this story. Anytime I go to check Headline News at night for something, it seems I turn it on when one of the re-runs of her show is on, and it's always about this little girl. Nance Grace is BY FAR the biggest b**** on television, and this news is going to make her just insufferable tonight. Of course, I'll probably watch the show which is why she has a successful show, but man I can't stand her. Getting back to me not ranting though, this is just an incredibly sad story. I'd have to imagine this is the body of the little girl, and it's a very sad end to a very sad story.
  19. If you can get something a bit more valuable than Homer Bailey, and are SURE that Abreu will sign, then trade Dye right now and get this all over with. I have no problem with that line of moves if it happens, and I'm sure the vast majority of people here would agree. Abreu brings a lot more versatility than Dye does, and is probably the better player at this point in time.
  20. QUOTE (The Critic @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 02:08 AM) I enjoy B&B, but Brian Paruch owns all. Thank you. I must be tired from finals, because I love "The King" and forgot all about mentioning him last night when I mentioned the shows I like. The Score is in pretty good shape when some of the older guys (Murph, Boers) step aside because Paruch and Goff and Drinky are all very good.
  21. Wow I had no idea Tebow's numbers were that poor. I was kind of iffy on him being in New York but figured whatever since he won last year, but after seeing those numbers, you guys are right Harrell not there over Tebow is an absolute crime. By the way, it was announced yesterday that Illinois and NIU will play at Champaign in September of 2010. http://niuhuskies.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl.../121008aaa.html I'm a bit surprised that the two don't play more often in football, although I really don't enjoy when they play against each other in anything. I'll be at the game though, that's for sure.
  22. QUOTE (bschmaranz @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 12:53 AM) I just listen for "White Panther" references. The sound effect is money.
  23. I actually like this deal for both teams, as silly as that sounds. Could work out quite well for both of them, although I think in the end it will probably benefit Tampa Bay more all things considered.
  24. Why isn't TexSox a post count option in the vote?
  25. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 12:14 AM) So, I got really hammered last night at the bars and I drove home. I know I shouldn't, but I tried to drive very carefully. Turns out I didn't do so good, because this morning I went out to the garage and found a dude all mangled up and $hit and stuck in the grill of my car. He's still alive but he's really eff'd up, and he keeps asking me to drive him to the hospital. Obviously, if I do that a cop is probably going to see me driving a car with a guy stuck in the grill, and I'm sure that's something he could write me a ticket for. I'm already carrying a few points on my license, so I'm trying to be careful, you know? Any suggestions from anybody who has been in this situation before? Yep, and I'll keep it simple. Have a burn barrel? You know, one of those garbage can type things you burn leaves in? Dispose of the evidence there with a nice fire, clean up the car, and make sure the ashes are never found.
