Sox at Oakland A's Part One
whitesoxfan101 replied to nitetrain8601's topic in 2008 Season in Review
I cannot stand this damn team. Drive me nuts. Should have walked Suzuki to set up the double play, so there is a tactical mistake by Ozzie. This game seems to sum up the way this division race will play out. We should win, we have the lead at times, we give it away in the end. Just can't win in Oakland. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 11:37 PM) No, when the Sox go on to lose tonight, it sets the tone for just a terrible weekend. They look defeated right now. The A's are a truly awful baseball team, and momentum is tomorrow's starting pitcher, so we won't get swept. The problem is, this is yet another in a long, long list of games that we've given away if the likely result occurs in the next 5 minutes. If there is a team that has given away more should be wins than the Chicago White Sox, I'd love to know who they are. This team is so damn stupid, and although I can't blame Ozzie for many tactical decisions this year, the blame has to go to him (as well as Kenny Williams to a certain degree) for having a stupid ass ballclub. -

I've said it a lot this year, and based on the IQ level of this team I'll say it several more times, but this would be the worst loss of the season. Simply pathetic. -

Uribe has had quite the night!! I didn't think it was possible, but this team will be a bigger frusteration/failure than even the 2003 White Sox were if they don't make the playoffs. It amazes me how stupid this team is and how much they give away to their opponents. -

I don't think we could have played dumber and poorer baseball in this game if we tried. -

Street has a lifetime ERA of 3 against us. I'm shocked it's that high, the only times I can even think of us scoring against him were a couple of home runs. Good AB Alexei. -

We don't usually hit Street too hard. He throws junk out of the zone (well, all he can throw is junk, his arm is shot) and we swing at it. Just like that one to Swish. -

We have about as dumb a team as there is in baseball. That has to be the explination, because we turn more easy wins into close wins and close wins into losses than any team I've seen this season. -

You may never seen a confrentation of all or nothing players again quite like Octavio Dotel and Jack Cust. We just can't win in Oakland. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 09:25 PM) The sheer drama that exists between when the race ends and when the 1/2/3 graphics come up is electric. Oh I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels that way, I absolutely can't get enough of that half second delay between a close finish and the graphics coming up on who got in first. Phelps gained two of his gold medals now in races that almost defied physics (the relay split by Lezak and the finish tonight). He's had 5 blowouts and two races that couldn't be any closer. You couldn't write a script better than this, it is amazing and so is Phelps. It's another example that sports/athletics are THE greatest form of reality television. And I will refrain from jumping on soxfan1 for his countryman losing it tonight like a few others have, unless of course he says that Phelps didn't actually win and it's some kind of conspiracy. -
QUOTE (scenario @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 12:15 PM) Can't get people out? In his major league debut, Richard struck out 7 Texas players in 4 innings... including striking out Josh Hamilton out 3 times. (Meanwhile, the Sox made 3 errors behind him.) And the Rangers have one of the best offenses in baseball this year. He looked very good the first 4 innings he pitched against the Twins. Faced two players over the minimum, while striking out Joe Mauer, Delmon Young, and Sox-killer Mike Redmond. (Yes he gave up the big inning, but Ozzie leaving him in to face Mauer/Mourneau after he started to struggle was stupid.) But struggled badly in his last outing. (Yes he sucked against the Royals.) Seems like the final impression he made is sticking with people more than the earlier ones. Richard was lights out at two levels in the minors this year... good enough to have him picked to start the Futures Game and be on the Olympic team. Suggesting he "can't get anybody out" after watching him pitch a total of 13 innings in MLB (at least half of which were very good) seems to be overly critical to me. Richard gave up 25 hits in 13 innings, as well as 15 earned runs and 4 walks. Following the Texas outing (a bizarre fluke since his lifetime k/9 ratio in the minors is in the 5's), he only had 4 more strikeouts in 9 innings. Almost everything he threw was hit very hard, and his only legit major league pitch was his fastball. Not sure what what saw of Clayton Richard was impresive, except that it took the Twins a few innings to figure out the crap he throws and that he struck out a lot of Rangers hitters while they lit him up.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 01:27 PM) I agree with your argument. Richard got banged around 3 times and never lasted more than 4 innings. Broadway does a real good job for 5 1/3 (failed only by his defense) and he gets sent down in favor of Richard. Man that is hard to figure out. Now on the other hand Carrasco is still a starting option. To be clear, if this were being done because Thornton was going on the DL and we wanted another lefty in the pen, well i'd be fine with it. But to send Broadway down and bring back Richard is baffling.
-
Having Richard on the team over Broadway makes little sense. I would hope we don't think Richard can contribute in the bullpen, because at least right now, I doubt he can. We are a starter short in the meantime, and although I have no idea if he is any good, Broadway has started in the majors twice and been good both times. Richard comes up and shows he can't get people out, Broadway shows he can, and we have Richard on the roster instead of Broadway. Makes perfect sense.
-
I'm not quite sure I get it. Clayton Richard sufficiently proved he is not ready to pitch in the major leagues yet as a starter, and I highly doubt he is in the bullpen either after starting in the minors all year. Broadway might not be very good, but he's now 2 for 2 in having good major league starts, so at least he's shown (unlike Richard) that he can get some major league hitters out.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 12:37 AM) Cavic won the heat beating Phelps, then he won his semifinal swim beating Crocker, and had a faster time than Phelps also. If Cavic wins the gold, which he has a very legitimate shot to do, the only people who would be surprised would be the people at NBC. Cavic winning wouldn't be all that big of a surprise, but the prelim heat times don't mean a whole lot. That's all about getting in the top 16 and then 8, and Phelps will be in another gear in the final (although so will Cavic obviously). Phelps has to be the favorite though, he is pretty good. BTW, the Chinese Taipei fans were heard singing "na na na na, hey, goodbye" in perfect english during a 12th inning rally to take the lead. I wonder if Nancy Faust had any idea what she was starting when she first played that song at Old Comiskey. -

QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 10:51 PM) "It was something like supposed to be funny or something but never offensive in any way," Spain's Pau Gasol, center for the Los Angeles Lakers, said. "I'm sorry if anybody thought or took it the wrong way and thought that it was offensive." I guess it's the people who take offense to the photo that have the problem. Nice job Gasol, wonder how L.A. fans and media will react to it when he's back. Yeah, and it's not like there is a large asian population in Los Angeles or anything..... The women's gymnastics thing was actually pretty good. I now have the baseball team on, who is tied 2-2 in the 5th with Cuba. -
More bizarre streak: White Sox go back to back to back to back for the first time in club history. Carlos Quentin is hit by a pitch for the 6th game in a row, when nobody since 1920 had been hit even 5 games in a row.

QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 04:21 PM) People overreact way too much around here. I agree with this, but not on Paulie they (well, I did it too so we) didn't. He has (and still does) show diminished ability on defense, and he simply did not hit the ball a lick for four months. That is reason to panic, but he's finally coming around it looks like at the dish.
-
I was really convinced that Paulie was irrevocably broken for the 2008 season. He's still looking a lot worse at 1st base then he used to defensively, but he's really hitting the ball hard this month and showing signs of coming out of his season long funk. And if Paulie hits like he's capable of the rest of the way, our offense is going to be perhaps the best in all of baseball, and if not that certainly in the top 3. That would be a huge plus to say the least, because our pitching is a bit hot and cold and we need to score runs to win this division.
-
It's amazing how easy it is to forget about all those stranded runners in the first five innings when you hit four home runs in a row in the sixth. THAT is what you should do to a horrible team like the Royals, kick their ass. Now, let's get some demons exorcised in Oakland. Hopefully Lance Broadway can do what he did today a few more times.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 02:54 PM) We've got ourselves a pitcher folks. With some defense behind him, he could have done a lot better. He threw too many pitches because he couldn't put hitters away (thus only one strikeout) and he was facing the Royals. However, after seeing him last September and today, I have hope that he's at least a little better than a lot of people (like me) think he is. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 14, 2008 -> 02:46 PM) How does Davies have 7 strike outs today? I don't believe in the whole myth of clutch and unclutch, but we've just swung and missed all day in key situations. It seems like the guys almost are too excited to swing at Davies' lousy stuff and are trying to do too much (and we've seen that before, although not much recently). -

We really do not deserve this game with the offensive execution so far. I am getting flashbacks to the first two and a half months of the season with this offensive performance.
