Evan Longoria out with Broken Wrist
whitesoxfan101 replied to elrockinMT's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 11, 2008 -> 05:14 PM) Buck Martinez was making his perdictions yesterday on TBS and he said the Yanks probably aren't going to be able to cathc the Rays or Boston. Now with Crawford and Longoria out that might change I think. Yanks don't have the starting pitching, but they can score runs. The Yanks would need Tampa Bay to collapse to catch them, and I don't think TB will outright collapse with their pitching. The Yankees just aren't very good, and even if they were to catch Tampa Bay, I don't like their odds to finish ahead of even Boston or the White Sox/Twins AL Central race loser. I know they are much close to those teams in the standings, but their team just isn't great. -
Evan Longoria out with Broken Wrist

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 11, 2008 -> 05:06 PM) MLB reports show Adam Dunn going from Reds to DBacks And maybe affecting the Sox, but especialy the AL East, is word that Evan Longoria in on DL with a fractured wrist so who does TB go to now? Tampa Bay is f***ed basically. Boston and New York will claim EVERY hitter they think Tampa Bay might want (and even the ones they dont wan't) on waivers. It'll be interesting though, because Crawford just went on the DL, and without him and Longoria, Tampa Bay's already mediocre offense will be awful. They'll have a hard time holding off Boston with those two guys out, and if Boston were to pass them, then you start to look at the wild card situation. Minnesota is only 1.5 games behind Boston in that regard right now. -
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 10, 2008 -> 06:05 PM) Even though I strongly disagree with his religious beliefs, he seemed to be a good man and he definitely seemed to have a great sense of humor. RIP, Isaac. I generally take entertainers for what they are worth, and that is entertainment only. Bernie Mac, widely known as a real good guy, seems to be the exception to the rule, as it seems like most famous entertainers are bad people, or have religious beliefs which are pretty bizarre, or whatever. However, Issac Hayes still did a lot of great things for entertainment, and will be missed for that.

This sucks. First Bernie Mac, then Issac Hayes, now this. At least Morgan Freeman survived, and Newman is still alive at least for now, but they always come in threes.
-
QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 10, 2008 -> 05:05 PM) They seem to always come in threes. Who's next? Maybe it was supposed to be Morgan Freeman. Fortunately, it seems he will survive (although the same can't be said for his marriage). EDIT: After seeing that Paul Newman thread, maybe it's going to be him.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 10, 2008 -> 04:33 PM) It just seems like we find ways to lose to the Royals and the Twins find ways to beat them. Well for one day, this statement is ignorant and wrong. And I love it! Hooray first place.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/obit_isaac_hayes A true pioneer. RIP. They always say it comes in threes. Between Hayes and Bernie Mac, you have two. Not sure who the third is or if they died already, but it seems like a bad week to be a groundbreaking african american.

QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ Aug 10, 2008 -> 04:18 PM) was talking to this braves fan who IMO talks about the Red Sox like he's a closet Sawx fan as well, he argued that Quentin still won't get MVP because of Hamilton's story, no matter how well Quentin plays the rest of the season Well that's cute. He's wrong, but that's cute. The Hamilton buzz is wearing off, because it's hard to keep a buzz going when your team isn't any good or in the race.

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Aug 10, 2008 -> 04:15 PM) Say it with me: M V P I'll be there tomorrow- let's get the series win! I think he's almost a lock to win if we make the playoffs. Hopefully we get to find out if I'm right.

As ugly a win as you'll see, but the bullpen did a good job overall (despite making it very interesting) and the offense did just enough. I'll take it, come on Royals!!

2008 Beijing Summer Olympics Thread

I'll say this: If basketball hasn't moved into the spot of 2nd most popular sport in the world behind only soccer yet, then it's going to very soon. China really started well with that crowd behind them and that barrage of 3's, but team USA overall, considering the circumstances, played well. They should be able to put it on cruise control and still beat Angola by 30 or so next game, and then it gets a lot tougher. -

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Aug 9, 2008 -> 08:59 PM) Jim "I do it when it counts" Thome. Oh no, people still buy into the "Thome is a choker OMG" myth even after his recent work throughout games? I hope that's not the case, as it'd be an unfortunate case of being misinformed. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 9, 2008 -> 08:42 PM) Completely agree...AJ's 2nd double play was the turning point of this game. That, along with the fact that if Jason Bay just hits his ground ball slightly harder, it's a double play and Thornton starts the 7th with a lead instead of Logan coming in. That and the A.J. double play (well, the 2nd one) were for sure the turning points. -

QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Aug 9, 2008 -> 08:38 PM) OK let's all simmer down here. Ozzie did not give the game away to teach a guy a lesson. He went with Logan as he has to pitch the guys he has got and he trusted Logan for Drew and Ortiz over Russell. Bad move. The fact is Dice K is dealing and the chances of the pen keping the Red Sox at 1 run were slight at best. Dotel, Thorton and Jenks are fresh for the next two. In the end Logan is on a bus, McDougal will be called up as he has the stuff moreso than the other options and they need to get one of the next two. The offense was non-existant this evening and there was nothing Ozzie or anyone sitting in leftfield was going ot do about it. You are right about the offense, and a lot of what you say makes sense, but the fact is Ozzie was willing to give up this game, an August game we entered with a 1/2 game lead. He knew there was a distinct chance (if not a certainty) Logan would give up multiple runs, and put him in anyways with another lefty available in the bullpen. With that move, he waved the white flag on this game and on first place (at least for now). We might not have scored anymore even if Ozzie had put Thornton in and he had thrown a good 7th inning, but at least we'd have had a chance. With Logan in, we didn't. -

A.J. has had as bad a game as I've seen a hitter have all season. A strikeout, three double plays, 0-4, 5 stranded. -

QUOTE (Wedge @ Aug 9, 2008 -> 08:31 PM) Maybe Ozzie gave Boone an opportunity to prove he's worth a s***? That's a nicer way to look at it. He's proven he's not worth a s*** in quite a few important spots for several weeks now before tonight. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 9, 2008 -> 08:26 PM) I think Ozzie decided with the bullpen's workload and the fact that he needs to conserve Thornton and Dotel for down the stretch...that he was willing to sacrifice this game to teach Boone Logan a lesson and end his White Sox career...I wouldn't be shocked if he never pitches for us again. Ozzie is a stupid man if that is true. If he was willing to sacrifice a game in August in a race that might come down to one game in order to end Boone Logan's Sox career, then he's not a smart manager. "Win the battle and lose the war" games are when you are down 7-4 or something and leave the starter in to give up a few more runs, but get a few more outs to save the bullpen, not games that are 1-1 in the 7th inning. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 9, 2008 -> 08:21 PM) So you're on the record that would have used Dotel or Adam Russell to start the 7th inning? Obviously, you're not advocating using Jenks (I hope). I'd have used absolutely anybody except Logan. I'd prefer Thornton to start the inning, but if not him, it probably would have had to be Russell (although Dotel would have been ok too). Logan is automatic to give up at least two runs when he comes in, and with the way Dick-K is pitching, that means we lose. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 9, 2008 -> 08:20 PM) You know what's amazing, as I take a step back....how quickly the buzz stopped regarding Griffey Jr. As I (and others as well) said the moment the trade happened, even if Griffey is great (and he hasn't been), our problem is pitching and defense right now, and if anything, he does nothing for part 1 and makes part 2 worse. -

No excuse to have Boone Logan in there in that spot, none. I know our pitching is thin, but to have Boone Logan put into a 1-1 game in the 7th inning of an August pennant race game is undefendable. I'd rather have put a righty in there, even with two lefties and a switch hitter starting the inning and Ortiz 5th in line. Logan has been the worst relief pitcher maybe in baseball the last 4 or 5 weeks. And now, because Ozzie put him in, we're done for the night. -
Between Jose being out for the year, and the fact that we should send Logan down to AAA (if not lower) with his embarassingly pathetic work the last month or so, Ehren should be back very soon.
