Carmines vs. White Sox 6:05 CT WGN

QUOTE (beck72 @ Aug 9, 2008 -> 11:09 AM) Is it just me or does the Boston lineup look a whole lot less dangerous without Manny in it? It's definitely not just you. They still have a very good lineup and Jason Bay is a very good player, but the entire dynamic of their lineup is different without Manny. Hopefully Jose has his good stuff tonight and is fresh after the DL time. -

Good to see the first U.S.A. Basketball game is actually on T.V. not only live, but at a reasonable time to watch (9 AM here in the central time zone on a Sunday morning). Hopefully they play well, it is certainly an interesting dynamic to have them opening against the host nation. -
So sad. Nobody should ever die as young as 50, and Bernie Mac was a great comedian who did well to represent where he was from. RIP.

GREAT game and an even better one to be at. We really need Linebrink back, but besides that, well done. The Boston fans were quiet all night at The Cell except for the home run. Mark was incredible on the hill too.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 10:44 PM) There was a study done the other day that said the Sox would give up 28 more runs the rest of the way with Griffey Jr. in the outfield than if they had a league average defender. I'd almost just rather put him at 1st even though he's never played there, it can't be any worse. PK is starting to show signs though (FINALLY), so we want to play him as much as possible to see if that continues.
-
Javy isn't the biggest waste of talent in the major leagues, but he's certainly up there. Watching him is so damn frusterating, almost as frusterating as watching Griffey in the field (yikes). Other than that though, whatever, we won the series and got back into 1st, let's get Boston tomorrow.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 03:12 PM) The funny thing with Thome is that he still can't hit the inside pitch at all. However, he's squaring up that outside pitch a lot more than he was early in the year, and most of his homers are going to the opposite way. I don't know why a team would ever pitch him a fastball away. He has done a great job of killing the ball whenever he gets a hittable pitch middle or away. He also seems to realize he can't turn on the inside pitch anymore unless he guesses right pre pitch and can load up and turn and burn, so for the most part he seems content to just try and foul that pitch off. He's still having all kinds of problems laying off the high fastball he can't catch, but is getting better laying off the soft breaking stuff down and out of the zone.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 02:22 PM) I see that the Rays picked up Chad Bradford. He's having a pretty good year so I'm wondering why we couldn't pick him up, especially since our pitching has been atrocious as of late. He is owed the pro rated portion of a 3.5 million dollar contract this year (so probably a little over a million dollars) as well as 3.5 million more next year. Plus, I think he might get a 500k bonus for being traded. That's an awful lot of money for a 33 year old ROOGY with a fast fading strikeout rate the last few years.

Tonight, the relevant portion of Tigers season is officially put to bed. Hopefully.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 02:33 PM) Jim Thome is 6th in HR and 12th in OPS in the American League. His OPS+ is 134. Thank god he wasn't released in May. So we have the 1st, 4th, and 6th place home run hitters in the AL and 5th, 6th, and 12th guys in OPS, with Thome 3rd on the team in both categories. That is as imposing a 3-4-5 as you'll find. Thome's rebound has been incredible though, he was absolutely horrible for two full months and has just been great since the beginning of June. I know everybody goes through slumps, but it was odd to see a hall of famer be unable to hit for two months, however Jim is back where he has been for a long time now, as an elite player.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 11:46 AM) They know thats what they have to do. Of course I dont know what was so bad about last year's game, they DID have more yards than LSU in the game, its not like it was a blowout, which SEC fans would love to make you believe. That game was over halfway through the 3rd quarter when LSU made it 31-10. It wasn't a blowout, but LSU had total control of that game throughout the 2nd half. If tOSU doesn't turn it over 3 times and take a stupid roughing foul early in the 3rd when LSU punted, it would have been a totally different game, but that was how it went. -
QUOTE (Heads22 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 09:58 PM) I like Joey answering questions. A lot, actually. You'll be seeing him do it for another team as a manager league manager next year, 2010 at the latest. Anyways, THAT is the kind of win I've wanted to see for a while now. Timely hitting, good defense, great pitching. I love it. Let's get a sweep tomorrow.

The city of Chicago itself is very unique in terms of weather, which is probably why you don't see tornadoes there. The lake keeps the city cooler than the surrounding area in many cases, as is the case throughout areas of Lake County as well. But the difference is Chicago isn't cooled nearly as much by the lake as places like Waukegan can be because of the urban heat island affect in the city re-warms the area a bit. For example, you'll often see a day in July where it's 78 in Waukegan and 88 in Aurora, but 83 in Chicago itself. Chicago is as complicated weatherwise as any city you'll find in the country, it's really hard to explain the weather in the city as it can be very different than even the nearby suburbs. One thing I will say is the reason the loop hasn't had a major tornado in well over a century has nothing to do with the tall buildings or the fact it's a big city. All the tall buildings really do is aid the urban heat island affect (but so do a lot of things, like the blacktop streets and emissions from automobiles). Actually, one other thing the tall and tightly packed together buildings can do in a downtown area during the storm is make the winds stronger and especially more likely to swirl.

QUOTE (YASNY @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 06:29 AM) You've always been respectful here. I don't think anyone that's been here awhile would misinterpret that post. Absolutely agreed. I didn't take his post at all as disrespectful either, just explaining why I think the Twins home comebacks are perceived as luck where ours aren't. Realistically though, anytime you erase a big deficit, there is luck involved though.

HOLY s*** @ the Rays 9th inning. They hit two home runs (including one by Gabe Gross to tie it that probably went about 475 feet), score six runs, and win 10-7 on a walk off three run home run by Carlos Pena. Oh, and they didn't record a single out in the 9th inning. I'm not sure I've ever seen anything quite like that to erase a big 9th inning deficit when you consider they didn't make a single out.

QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 02:31 PM) Len Kasper is a boob. The national league is so freaking god awful its sick. Fixed. How long are they going to leave Backe in? Well, now they are taking him out....after giving up 10 runs and having the bases loaded with 1 out in the 4th. Jesus, took you long enough Cooper.

NFL releases new code of conduct for fans

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 12:54 PM) Never been to many college football games? In Madison its a tradition that if some one wears an opposing teams shirt into the student section that their shirt is ripped off and thrown out of the stadium. There is also a tradition that a dead fish is thrown at them. In all my times at Bears games Ive actually felt that their fans were not that bad (Ive seen Cubs and Sox fans be way worse) so I guess im not exactly sure how this is a "Bears" thing. I cant imagine that a Red Sox fan would be welcomed in Yankee Stadium? Never been to a Red Sox/Yanks game, and as for college football, I have seen fans get all kinds of crap, but not like getting beat up or stuff thrown at them or anything like that. You are right though that's it isn't just a Bears thing, it just seems worse at them than anywhere else I've been. However, I haven't been to many NFL games (could count the total on one hand) outside of Bears games, so it probably is pretty bad everywhere else too. As for the teams policing their fans and not the NFL, I think the reason the NFL is doing this is the teams have proven they can't police their own fans by themself. Also, if you wear an opposing team shirt and go to a game in the STUDENT SECTION as a road fan, you deserve to have a fish thrown at you, that is just stupid. Sit in the section where the rest of the fans from your school are. -

QUOTE (Gregory Pratt @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 11:41 AM) Really? Are we talking about TV broadcasters or actual print journalists? Because there's all the difference in the world. And, even on that, I'd note that almost all newspapers insist on at least two sources for news like this, and usually there's more. "Lazy" is not a term for journalists. TV broadcasters in a lot of cases should have the title "journalist" removed from them. So many of them are lazy asses that think they rule the world just because they are on T.V. -

QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 11:38 AM) That's mostly what I was referring to. Also, to be perfectly honest, I expect a certain amount of harassment when I go to my teams' away games. That's just part of going. As long as it doesn't get out of hand... touch me, or anything on my body, or throw anything at me, and I'm gonna want to beat the s*** out of you. NFL games and Cubs/Sox games are the only places I've really seen fans be treated unfairly for simply rooting for the other team. However, with that in mind, if any league needed a rule to protect fans of the other team, it's obviously the NFL. And having been to some Bears games myself, the "ignoring stadium personnel" rule is going to get a few more people kicked out of Soldier Field this year. -

Are all the bad things that come out about the GWB administration true? Of course not, but because of the poor job done and lies told by said administration, all of them are believeable. -

QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 11:34 AM) Much of this is unenforceable. It's just a bunch of PR posturing. The last two rules involving not listening to stadium personnel and harrassing opposing fans are very enforceable. I think you might be right about the rest of them though, because you'd seriously have to kick out half the stadium at ALL NFL games if you can't get drunk and stupid and use bad language. -

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 11:19 AM) im just not as high on little animal as other OSU fans are. Beanie worked out twice a day every day this summer, in his practice pictures he looks stronger than last season. I would NOT like to be a DB trying to tackle him in the open field, if I could catch him. Beanie is unreal. As for Ohio State, I would be shocked if they don't go undefeated at home. Their season will come down to the games at USC, Wisconsin, and Illinois, because they would have to really lay an egg to lose any of their other 9 games. I don't think there is anyway they go to the national championship game unless they go undefeated though, because the people in power will do everything they can to keep Ohio State out of the title game after what happened the last two years. -
(I thought this deserved it's own thread. If not, go ahead and throw it in the catch all). http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nf...f-conduct_N.htm If the NFL plans to actually uphold this rule, about 80 percent of people that go to Bears games will be kicked out and not allowed back for future games. I have never, in my life, seen a place more crude, rude, and foul than a Chicago Bears game, which is saying something. I don't think any clear minded, sane person minds these rules though, it's just for the out of control drunken idiots. (And for the record, I do not mean to seem like I am picking on people that go to Bears games, but based on what I've seen, what I said about them is true).
