  1. Well, if we sweep the Tigers, than "THIS. TEAM. IS. DEAD." would accurately apply to the Tigers in my opinion. Also, if we win tonight, I think we will sweep them with as demoralizing as another loss would be to them after the way last night's game went. So tonight is an important game, even beyond the obvious.
  2. Ryan Theriot. First of all, he's thought of as a good fielding shortstop around here, even though I've never seen a SS with less range in my life. Second, he continues to see pitches away and continues to hit them into right field. PITCH HIM INSIDE, does anybody have a scouting report on him? Thus, I guess in those regards, I hate the media and his opponents more than him for being stupid. However, the guy was a career .270 hitter in the minors, yet has been hitting about where he is right now (.315) all season. He should be on the Twins with as long as his pixie dust has lasted this season. Also, James Posey was a good choice earlier in this thread, especially after last year where we heard how important he was to the Celtics. Actually, he WAS indeed that important to the Celtics, but he's still one of the biggest f***ing punks you'll find on the field/court in all of sports right now.
  3. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 10:17 AM) Every other team huh? I guess Dick Rod came in and invented the best conditioning program ever!!!!!!!!! Nobody has EVER seen a program like this!!!!!! Write it in the papers and our fans will BELIEVE!!!! Come on, they are what they are. A rebuilding team, with a chance to upset some teams at one point or another during the season. I admit I did chuckle at the "they'll be better conditioned than everybody else" part of the post. Reminds of Charlie Weis's ill fated "you will have a tactical advantage every game" comment when he got to Notre Dame. As for Joe McKnight, I am skeptical of him. I was awfully impressed by USC last year in the Rose Bowl, but as for McKnight, his best play was a byproduct of total luck on that bouncing lateral, and he was run down by Vontae Davis after he had about a 10 yard head start on him. He's certainly no Reggie Bush in terms of speed, that's for sure.
  4. QUOTE (YASNY @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 09:17 AM) Couldn't agree more. Games threads are generally no longer enjoyable. This is absolutely true. I am generally known (accurately) as a negative poster, and even I try to avoid most game threads due to the negativity.
  5. The Cubs should be terrified of the Phillies, because if they can ever get their s*** together, they are the biggest challenge to the Cubs IMO. They play well on the road, have an offense than can slug with the Cubs, and have a good bullpen. In fact, I think a lot of the same things can be said about the Marlins, another team in that race (although their pen isn't as good as the Phillies). I don't think the Mets win that division. I will say this, the way the Cubs are built is to take leads early and play at home. I think in October, if you can keep it close into the 6th and 7th innings, and just try and steal a game at Wrigley, you can beat them for sure.
  6. I met the kid when he was in high school, and some of my friends in Miami know him pretty well. I can't wish anything but success for the guy.
  7. QUOTE (Benchwarmerjim @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 12:57 AM) I never want to hear a Sox fan complain about the 'luck' the Twins have at the Metrodome I swear, you guys in the Cell....there is always about 10 games a year where you hit a 3 run bomb late in the game to win. and on that note, welcome back to first place. This division race is like a close horse race, neck and neck and were are coming up on the 3/4 mile post I agree on the race, and you might be right about us at The Cell. The thing is though, when you look at how we come back and win at home, usually it's because of home runs. To hit a home run, for the most part, you have to hit the ball pretty damn hard. On the flipside, most Twins comebacks at home involve bunts, seeing eye singles, balls getting lost in the roof/lights, etc. I think you see where I'm going with this, it just seems like luck when it's done in that fashion.
  8. QUOTE (danman31 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 01:01 AM) Say it damnit. You think the Twins are gonna win? What I was thinking was we still had a lousy start tonight from Floyd and still gave up 8 runs. However, the bullpen did throw 9 innings of what, two or three run ball? And the home run was IMO because Thornton was left in too long, so they were VERY good, and that's a positive sign, as was the never say die attitude the sqaud displayed as they always have done this year. One thing you can't question is the heart of this team.
  9. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 12:30 AM) Now I was told in the gamethread that this team was not only pathetic, but that clearly being at home doesn't make a difference. Tell that to the Twins. Well being at home, as we saw tonight, isn't going to fix our pitching. However, it can fix the damn offense even more than it has already been good, and we'll win a few like this one.
  10. It went from looking like a game out after the most frusterating loss of the year, to a game up after the most exhilerating win of the season in about 15 minutes. Baseball is a great game.
  11. I am just going to not say what I am thinking with my head. The one thing I will say is you appreciate first place more after spending a day without being in it.
  12. Seems like he was a perfect candidate to vote for candidates in Chicago political races.
  13. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 09:54 PM) Is this that rare for Chicago/area? Put it this way. My Dad is 45 years old, has lived in Chicago pretty much his entire life, and this was the 2nd time he had heard the tornado sirens. Man, there is no sound scarier for somebody that grew up in the city/nearby suburbs than the tornado sirens. I think this might actually be the 3rd year in a row there has been a tornado warning somewhere in the city of Chicago, but they just don't actually set off those sirens unless it gets really bad. You just don't hear them very often, even going to NIU I've heard them a couple times and they still scare me big time, even as somebody who knows weather. And the whole tornadoes don't hit big cities/big buildings thing is a myth. The only reason you don't see tornadoes in big cities more often is the fact that so many of them are in areas not prone to tornadoes. That, and the fact that big cities take up such small areas of land relative to the size of the country. But I might be wrong here, you guys are probably just being sarcastic and knew that already.
  14. Sounds like one of those people who is really gay, but refuses to/is afraid to admit it. If you are beating it in front of other men that much and that homophobic at first glance, you are probably gay.
  15. QUOTE (DBAH0 @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 03:41 PM) Amazing how much his stock has fallen over the past season and a half. I wouldn't mind having a look at him if he was available though. My brother (who is a huge Reds fan) has told me that Bailey has suffered from the fatal combination of too many walks and not enough strikeouts since he was called up to Louisville early in 2007, and looking at his baseball cube page, that appears accurate (especially looking at his hits/9 numbers). I know for a fact that Bailey has lost velocity, as his fastball has only been in the 90 to 93 MPH range this season. I am not sure if he has been pitching injured or what, but his stuff has really fallen off for some reason.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 11:14 AM) The Packers have now hired former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer to do damage control. He's the guy who was the press secretary when we launched Bush's war. It's crazier. They hired THAT GUY for damage control? That's like using Paul Konerko is a pinch runner.
  17. It's fitting that the umpires would even get their apology wrong. They can say what they want, but I'm not sure what tapes they were watching because Carrasco was CLEARLY throwing at Olivo. I think based on Ozzie's reactions to everything that Carrasco was doing it on his own, and not told to do it by anybody, but he was throwing at him. The umpires should be apologizing for their work in this series, not so much for a beanball war. The good news at least is that Carrasco may dodge a suspension now, which is good because he's pitching relatively well for us. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 3, 2008 -> 11:05 PM) I wonder what Olivo's career stats are against the Sox. It seems to me like so many former Sox, he's pretty much killed us at times. I could be mistaken, but Olivo seems like he feasts on us. .232/.271/.411/.682 in 56 at bats in his career against the Sox. He has come up with some important hits against us, so I can see why you think he's hurt us because in that sense he has, but those numbers aren't very good to say the least.
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 11:50 AM) The key question is...how long can the Twinkies keep up playing .667 ball? In 05, the only real reason Cleveland got back in to the race was that they spent about 2 months playing .750 ball. Both the Sox and Twins are right around .560 for the season right now. If they can keep playing .667 ball the rest of the season, you almost just have to tip your hat to them because you have to be one Hell of a team to keep up that level of performance over 4 straight months. The Twins won't play that well the rest of the way with all the road games they have left, they are just not the same away from the dome. The big question is if we are good enough to get our pitching back on track and start winning some series, because this division is there for the taking if we can.
  19. QUOTE (almagest @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 11:11 AM) Ruth also played in the dead ball era for a large part of his career, and played in parks much larger than those of today. His slugging percentage would be higher, and he'd have quite a few more home runs if he played in today's parks: Also mentioned in that article is that the White Sox were second in the bidding for Ruth -- how different would this franchise have been if we were able to get him? Your points hold merit on Ruth, as the rules of his time cost him a lot of home runs. But at the same time, had he played today, his off the field actions would get him killed by the media, he wouldn't hit nearly as well with how much better the pitching is, he had the advantage of facing ONLY white/American players, and he would have some problems now IMO. I think Ruth could be an everyday player today, which is moreso a statement as to how great and ahead of his time he was when he played, but he wouldn't have done nearly the same kinds of things had he played now. The interesting thing though, to me, is the old foul pole rule. For years in the early 1900's, this rule was like the DH rule is now, because in the AL a ball off the foul pole was a ground rule double, and in the NL it was a home run. The foul pole rules in all star games and world series were actually determined by what league's park the game was at I think. How strange, Ruth probably would have a few extra homers had the Yankees just been an NL team. He'd probably still have the all time home run record if not for the rule that a ball that landed in foul ground was a foul ball, even if it went over the wall in fair ground.
  20. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 10:39 AM) See, thats where Im looking at. We handed them their butts and sat back and they jumped right back into the race. 32-16 is pretty incredible IMO, especially coming off a sweep at the hands of your main rival Well it is very good, but most of that was done the month after that series (rest of June and early July). We actually held off that run to remain in first place, and since that time the Twins have really cooled off. The problem is, we've pretty much fallen off the map to a .500 team in that same timespan and now have been passed.
  21. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 10:33 AM) Is 17-11 their record since we swept them at the Cell? No they are 32-16 since then if I recall, and that's awfully good. But my point is that our stretch of bad play really started on either July 1st (we're 14-14 since then) or the off day July 7th (10-12 since then), and Minnesota has only gained 3 and 2 games since those days. So it's not like they caught us because they played incredible, it's more that we are playing bad.
  22. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 10:09 AM) Similar to Minnesotas incredible play at the moment That's a myth. We're 14-14 since July 1st and they have gained 3 games, going 17-11. That's pretty good play, but nowhere near incredible.
  23. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 03:38 AM) Stopping at August 1st, in his last 168 games(going back to last year), he has put up a line of: .311, 41 HR, 106 RBI, 105 R, 3 SB. Best FA signing by the Sox ever? I think there is a very good chance he is. I remember when we signed him, I just liked him because he took less money from us to spurn Arizona, and hoped he would simply be able to soften the blow of losing Magglio and his production pre knee injury. Boy has he done more than that.
  24. Yeah I was thinking this yesterday, this years Angels do remind me a lot of the 05 Sox. The 08 Sox are a better comparison for the 03 Sox though.
  25. http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/news/article...sp&c_id=atl Sad news, I had no idea he had even been sick. RIP.
