I just noticed that a little under a week ago on August 17th, this thread celebrated it's one year anniversary. Congrats to what is now a soxtalk tradition, the "i am drunk" thread!

No one's made a Sox loser thread after 8/23 loss

I think Ozzie should have put Carrasco in after the lead off man reached in the 8th, and certainly after the 2nd man reached that inning. D.J. is really the only guy we can trust down there besides Jenks, but the bigger point is there is trouble if you can only trust two guys in your bullpen. What an unfortunate turn for Javy as well, and we need to score more than 3 runs on offense. However, today's game is a game you MUST MUST win if you want to make the playoffs. -

Well the men's volleyball team does what the women's team couldn't, beating Brazil and taking the gold medal, hopefully it's a similar story with the men's water polo team, as they'll look to do what the women couldn't in that sport and win the gold. The men's basketball team will look to follow suit with the women and take the gold medal as well, and the baseball team won bronze about 24 hours ago after the softball team unfortunately had to settle for silver. It seems like the team sports squads for the United States have done well in Beijing though. -
I just can't get enough of Obama without a teleprompter. Between Biden and Obama, we should get a few more fun ones like this by early November.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Aug 23, 2008 -> 01:39 AM) Oh, I'm itching for a McCain-Romney Ticket. THAT is gonna be a lot of fun. They really ripped into each other. You can argue policy, but when one says the other isnt "authentic".. ouch. It would be funny if that happened. Two tickets who both appeared to have completely burned down bridges to ever get along. The fact that there is an Obama/Biden ticket and very well could be a McCain/Romney ticket tells you how important "electability" is now a days. Biden also said "Right now I don't believe he is. The presidency isn't something that lends itself to on the job training" when asked if he thinks Obama is ready to be president, and then stood by it, during 2007. Now I understand that was when he was in the race, but the GOP is going to jump all over that, guaranteed. Between Biden and McCain, you've got two of the great tempers in the history of presidential tickets regardless of party, so this SHOULD be fun. I think this is going to be an ugly and negative campaign run by both parties, ESPECIALLY if McCain picks Lieberman or Romney because that gives the dems a lot of targets to fire at too.
-
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Aug 23, 2008 -> 01:29 AM) I think if you look at the what the GOP wanted Obama to do, it goes like this: Kaine... Bayh... Biden... Clinton They feared an Obama / Clinton ticket the most and were itching to paint Obama / Kaine as the least experienced ticket ever. Clinton would have been a HORRIBLE pick, Obama was wise to not pick her. I actually thought he'd pick Kaine, but I'm not surprised by him picking Biden either. It was the safe pick, as long as Biden keeps his mouth shut (it is interesting he was the pick after what he said about Obama in 2007, although that was more a negative connotation of a certain race than anything else). I expect Obama's campaign to go more negative now too, that's for sure, although that's not nessesarily a bad idea because he's going to get blitzkrieged by the GOP. The fun part about this is that the Biden comments from 2007 will obviously come up and he will argue about things like comma placement in defense of it.
-
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Aug 23, 2008 -> 01:00 AM) And the GOP just pooped themselves. Ummm, no. Although to be honest, no matter who the democrats picked, the dems would be saying "great pick, McCain is in trouble!" and the GOP would be saying "what a horrible pick!", so I'm not sure how much what anybody thinks matters. This seemed like a pretty obvious choice though for Obama, so I don't think you can say he screwed up making this pick. He took the safe route, and although he will be criticized for that as the "candidate of change", it's the right move for November.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Aug 22, 2008 -> 04:23 PM) Honestly I would guarantee all those times are crap. All hand timed and thus much better times than they actually were. Yeah, outside of a complete freak like Usain Bolt, it's just about impossible to run anything less than the low 4.2's in the 40. -

QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 22, 2008 -> 04:54 PM) Yeah, didn't he have like 2 catches his freshmen year? I heard he has had a lot of attitude problems as well. We went to my alma mater so I was curious. I've heard the same thing about his attitude. With the new coach though, bad attitudes are not something he tolerates. Combine that with the fact Lewis is talented and a junior, and I'd say pretty early on this season you'll be able to tell if he is going to ever contribute for the Huskies. -

QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 22, 2008 -> 04:29 PM) Is Marcus Lewis gonna ever do anything for the Huskies? Haven't heard his name much this offseason, so I am not sure how much impact he'll have this season. It's a new coaching staff so you never know in terms of playing time until the season starts. Not redshirting him was a big mistake in retrospect because four of the top receivers on the team are seniors and it'd be nice to have him back for 2009 and 2010 after all those guys are gone. Another problem for Lewis is the aforementioned Me'co Brown, as well as a true freshman from St. Louis named Tommy Davis, might see some time in the slot this year because they both have great speed. But we'll see, I think Lewis has quite a bit of talent and with the spread looks and depth Coach Kill seems to like using, he should see time. -

I am just going to throw out a name here: Me'co Brown. He's a true freshman running back on NIU from Mississippi, and friends of mine on the football team say he's a dead ringer for Garrett Wolfe when you watch him play in practice and scrimmages. Might be the next great NIU running back, and he's expected to be the punt and kick returner right away, as well as see some time on offense. -
Outside of the 2003 Tigers, I think this years Nationals are the worst team I've ever seen. If they aren't, they are certainly top 5 on that list.

QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 22, 2008 -> 11:17 AM) I'm sure Manu would of helped, but he wasn't exactly playing great before he went down. Had a couple of fouls on him and wasn't finishing or scoring. True, but he only played 6 minutes and Manu is a 2nd half player anyways. I think it's fair to say we win by about 10 instead of about 20 if he plays though, and we're better than that. However that does point to how high the standards are I guess, and all that matters is one more win means a gold medal. Hopefully they do what they did last week and crush Spain to get it done. Spain's point guard is questionable for the game apparently, so that certainly won't help their cause. -
QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 05:30 PM) Let's not get crazy here. Cubs aren't just an "the NL sucks" team. Look at the talent they have on that team. Also, there aren't 5 teams in the AL better than them. Cubs still have the best overall 3 starters in baseball compared to any other team, and as B&B were talking about yesterday, which one of the Sox pitchers would you take over any of those 3 in the playoffs? Likely none of them. I hate the cubs fans as much as the next guy, but let's not act like we have a world beater team and their team sucks. It just makes us look like a bunch of idiots. I'd take Danks over Zambrano, and I'd take any of our top three starters over Ryan Dempster without question. If we get Linebrink back, we also have a better bullpen than they do and our offensive revival is closing the gap between the two teams in that category. I know the Angels and Rays are better than the Cubs, you could argue we are better, Boston is pretty close if they'd stop underachieving (I think they are at least). Ok, 2 to 4, Minnesota isn't better. Their team doesn't suck, but they aren't world beaters either. They are just a very good team that looks a lot better because they play in one of the worst leagues in terms of an individual season, the 2008 National League, in baseball history. The problem is they do play in that league and thus will have to either choke or see somebody get red hot and become a challenge to not win the pennant.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 22, 2008 -> 11:07 AM) You know standards are high when you get a 20 point blowout against your toughest competitor and they looked bad while doing it. The standards are high and your point is well taken, but Argentina was without Ginobili for basically the entire game. He is by far their best player, and had he played, this game is much closer and perhaps even a single digit final. We should have beat them by 30+ when you consider we jumped out 21-4 and by the time the lead was that large, Ginobili was gone and never coming back in today's game. Perhaps the combination of that lead and no Ginobili happening and happening that fast took away some of our focus though, one thing is for sure and that is the United States took way too many 3's. -
LOL the Twins won one game, team of destiny my ass, let's not overreact here. We are still better than them, and it's still nobody's fault but our own if we don't win this division.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Aug 22, 2008 -> 10:49 AM) Carmelo has 21 points and has made just 3 shots And Manu has only 2 for Argentina Manu has been out with an injury since early on, which is why I am so concerned. This is probably a very close game if he didn't get injured, team U.S.A. has just struggled big time. They've taken 30 three pointers, they had only taken about 60 if you combine all the previous games. Team U.S.A. wins 101-81 over Argentina, scoring 100+ again and winning by 20+ (they've won by that much every game, with the closest games being today and a 21 point win over Angola). Argentina is going to look back at this game with what if's, because if they had Ginobili it probably is at least a relatively close game. No matter, the U.S. advances to play Spain. I am a bit worried after watching today's game, but the U.S. beat them by 37 points about a week ago, I can't imagine the teams have become 38 points different in about 7 days. -

The United States lead is 78-64 after 3 quarters. I understand Argentina is the 2nd best team in this tournament, but we've looked pretty bad since early in the 2nd quarter. Hopefully the Americans play a strong 4th quarter and can take a 20 or so point win into the Spain game with the gold medal on the line. They should have this one in the bag as a victory though, I can't see Argentina being 15 points better in the 4th quarter. -

Boy what a horrible 2nd quarter for the U.S., 21 point lead early in the 2nd is down to 9 at halftime. They might want to wake up and keep in mind that they go right back to laughingstock if they lose, and not only that, but even worse since they would have blown a 21 point lead if that occurs. -

The volleyball stuff is outstanding, great game last night. Also, men's water polo (speaking of sports I had no idea we were good at) did what all American teams have done throughout the olympics and crushed Serbia. That puts them into the gold medal match, as they'll try to avoid getting the silver the women's water polo team had to settle for. The basketball team looked like they had things under control with a 21 point lead and Ginobili out, but Argentina is currently making a furious comeback in the 2nd quarter as the U.S. team decided this was a good time to take a nap. -
When you take Cook outside of the friendly Charlotte ballpark, he has a .380 slugging percentage in 121 triple a at bats on the road. He still has a .270/.366/.430/.796 in triple a which isn't bad, but at age 27 with no major league experience you have to do better than that to get a shot at the big leagues.

QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 08:45 PM) imo this election is going to come down to the new voter registration advantages that the dems have gained in the past year in several states. people who previously had not voted, who may (or may not) be coming out to vote in November. College kids and young people show up, Obama wins close states like Nevada, Iowa and Colorado. Those 3 states move blue and Obama keeps all of Kerry's states its a 286-252 advantage for Barrack. Even if McCain takes Romney who somehow turns Michigan Red, its 269-269, plus Nebraska splits its votes up proportionately. Obama will take 1 of the 3 electoral votes out of Nebraska, thus 270-268. Larger than normal African American vote puts North Carolina, Indiana and even Georgia in play. They no show, like they did for Kerry in 2004... McCain's got this one wrapped up. The african american vote is going to show up big time for Obama, but I doubt the young people vote does. The allure and popularity of Obama on places like college campuses is wearing off quite a bit, you can't keep a 20 year old's attention that long. Just my opinion though, it's going to be a close race either way unless something very strange happens. -

QUOTE (KipWellsFan @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 04:49 PM) Or maybe it's because you guys are cynical as hell and will make whatever excuses you can so you can ignore the quality of candidates like John McCain and Barack Obama who are both great Americans. And "change" is one of the most successful and often repeated strategies in winning elections and support all over the world, in fact I would encourage Obama to continue to say it, and say it more, and say it in different ways. You could call us cynical as hell just as easily as you could call the Obama fans naive as hell. The entire race you will hear Obamatrons calling McCainiacs cynical, just as McCainiacs will call Obamatrons naive. It will be interesting to watch play out from that angle, among many others.
