  1. QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Oct 18, 2007 -> 10:31 PM) USF done And Boston College may follow suit next Thursday, as they visit Blacksburg for a weeknight game. Arizona State plays Cal, at Oregon, at UCLA, USC the next 4 weeks, Kansas plays at Colorado and Texas A&M the next 2 weeks, and finishes with Missouri. And of course, Ohio State still has games at Penn State and at Michigan, while even Hawaii has to play Boise State and a revitalized Fresno State program. I think there is a chance NOBODY survives the regular season undefeated, this might be the year that finally kills the BCS. The moral of the last 2 years is clear though: If your a BCS team having a dream undefeated season, don't visit Rutgers for a Thursday night game.
  2. QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Oct 18, 2007 -> 08:33 PM) Agree. Didn't even notice that Lamaar Thomas picked OSU on the show as well. That's almost out of the blue to me, I thought he was Illinois to lose. “Anthony Gonzalez worked with me on my route running,” Thomas informed" Is that not a recruiting violation like it is in basketball? Thomas was never Illinois' to lose, not sure where you heard that. Not getting Thomas sucks, but the Illini are going to end up signing 3 very good RB's by the time all the verbals are said and done this class, and already have Pollard and Dufrene, so it could be worse.
  3. QUOTE(fathom @ Oct 18, 2007 -> 06:37 PM) Actually, GT was on him at the beginning with Marquette, Bradley, and Clemson. UNC is the one who got in late. I know UNC was late, but I did not know GT was on him early at all. I guess I just never read it since all I knew about this story was what the recruiting sites said since Illinois wasn't really involved at all, thanks for the info. And yeah, picking GT isn't exactly dumb, Atlanta is a big market, GT a very good school, and Hewitt gets point guards to the NBA. Plus, Shumpert's game is comparable to Javaris Crittendon, a 1st round pick of the Lakers this past summer IMO.
  4. With as bizarre as the Shumpert recruitment was, it only makes sense he would pick Georgia Tech and shock everybody. Recruiting can suck sometimes. Oh, and the johnny come lately argument is a lie, Georgia Tech was very late in terms of getting in on the recruitment. And yes, Crittle did verbal to Oregon today.
  5. Talking to some friends down in Champaign, I've been told that Rodney Alexander reminds the staff a lot of Wilson Chandler, who like Alexander is a wing player from Benton Harbor, Michigan (although now he's in the NBA of course). Then again, that makes sense since Chandler and Alexander are cousins, anyways Rodney is a bit raw but has a ton of talent. Also, Mike Tisdale is up to about 7'1" and 220 to 225 pounds, and if he can continue to maintain and gradually gain weight as he has been for about a year now, he could see quite a bit of PT this year because of his ability to score points. In addition, you might see quite a bit of Demetri McCamey and Chester Frazier on the floor at the same time to aid ball movement in the motion offense, and Mike Davis from the T.C. Williams (Remember The Titans!!) is improving rapidly, and might see some PT this year due to his athleticism and size (6'9" with a wingspan of 7'3" and a 38 inch vertical leap, but only 190 pounds). Redshirts are going to be decided after the O&B scrimmage, and there is a chance that the only redshirts this year will be Jamar and Bill Cole, who is VERY skinny and has had some nagging minor injuries this summer and into the fall. As for those Marquette jerseys, I REALLY like the new home jersey, and although the road ones aren't ugly or anything, the color scheme just doesn't fit with what I think of when I think Marquette with the light blue. But then again, I'm only 21 so what do I know.
  6. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 17, 2007 -> 02:23 PM) I'll remove the "far" from my statement if you promise to go look up the definition of the word "lie". Well if you just say Thomas was a better hitter, then it's not a lie since a lie is a statement someone knows is false, but is made with the intention that others will see it as truth. However, it is more than feasible to say and believe that Frank was just generally a better hitter than Manny in their primes. But since I know your smart enough to realize that Frank was not a "far better" hitter in his prime than Manny, the statement was technically a lie, albeit a relatively insignificant little white lie.
  7. You said Thomas was a far better hitter in his prime than Manny, that is what I called a lie because it is. And yes Frank has drawn a few more walks, but Manny has hit for a little more power. In the end, the numbers are and pretty much always will be a wash once they both retire, and I think that's fitting since they are about even in terms of hitters once you balance out all the factors.
  8. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 17, 2007 -> 11:52 AM) Thomas was a far better hitter in his prime than Manny in his prime. Heck, even taking a career-long view, that is still true. Umm....no. career: Frank: .303/.421/.561/.982 Manny: .313/.409/.593/1.002 In their prime (Their 7 best seasons): Those 7 prime seasons are every 1.000+ OPS year for both guys, and in their seasons besides that, their numbers are also similar except Frank has a bit more experience obviously (although not that much more due to injuries). The only real noticeably difference there is obviously Frank's obnoxious strike shortened season, but Manny had two years with an OPS in the 1.100+ range, whereas Frank never got that high other than 1994. They are undebateably the two best right handed hitters of our generation, but to say Frank was a far better hitter either in his prime on in general is just a lie. If Manny plays well past his prime like Frank has, the numbers in fact would probably end up being even closer than they already are, too. It's a very fun debate, but to say either is clearly better, either in their prime or for their overall career, is not accurate.
  9. Wow, not only does he cheat again doing the exact same stuff he did at OU, but his goon squad of assistants are doing it too and it's not reported. Over/under on how much longer Sampson lasts?
  10. I watched this story on that new show E:60 last night, and they had the people who received the kids organs meet his parents and it was just unbelieveable to watch. I don't cry over stuff I see on T.V., even if it's real, but that's about as close as I've ever come to it. Just an amazing story, and yeah I wonder why anybody would NOT be an organ donor.
  11. QUOTE(BHAMBARONS @ Oct 16, 2007 -> 11:57 PM) Colorado in June ripped both NYY and Boston including a 12-2 and 7-1 routs of Boston. They won't be playing either of those teams in the World Series though, as the Indians are about to finish off eliminating them both, so that holds no relevance.
  12. QUOTE(Big Hurtin @ Oct 16, 2007 -> 11:23 PM) So you're saying that you never see batters show up pitchers, then subsequently get hit / brushed back? I'm not saying that it would stop him from being a "douche", but that I'm surprised it doesn't happen. Well no, but everybody seems to think brushing back Manny will stop him from being a douche and/or hitting home runs, and it won't. I don't think he gets brushed back though (although if he does, I can't argue with it), as Cleveland has bigger fish to fry, like clinching a pennant. As for Delcarmen.....he made the mistake of throwing an outside fastball to Peralta, and although it registered at 96, throwing an outside fastball to Peralta is like throwing a down and in heater to Thome, something bad is going to happen to you.
  13. QUOTE(Big Hurtin @ Oct 16, 2007 -> 11:10 PM) I cannot for the life of me understand why no one knocks him down. He does that crap all the time. He's lucky he never played against someone like Don Drysdale. LOL give me a f***ing break. Yeah Manny is a douche, but if you throw at him he'll just homer the next 2 times he faces you and stare and watch it leave both times. It's the same thing as the Chad Johnson stuff, if you don't want to see it, don't let him do well.
  14. Well I will say this: Regardless of the Beckett decision being right or wrong, Cleveland is just a damn good team. I can't see Boston beating them three times in a row, but hey baseball is a funny game.
  15. Unless one of the following 2 unlikely senarios happen: 1. The Red Sox come back from 7 down in the 6th 2. The Red Sox beat Cleveland 3 times in a row, with Sabathia, Carmona, and Westbrook going Tito will be hearing about the ill fated decision to start Wakefield in game 4 instead of Beckett in games 4 and 7 for a long time in New England.
  16. QUOTE(Capn12 @ Oct 16, 2007 -> 04:59 PM) Yep, that MUST be it....it has nothing at all to do with the sheer amount of talent in the southeast region at all....just us southerners being uneducated and going to school because of football alone.... Wow, don't go on and put words in anybodys mouth or anything. The warm climate and year round training players get in the south certainly helps the talent level (as well as passion for the game) in the region, but the fact is that SEC football programs let a lot of kids in with college resumes the Big 10 would laugh at, and thus the SEC has a larger talent pool to draw from.
  17. QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Oct 16, 2007 -> 02:59 PM) Beckett came out of the pen to beat the cub in 04 he may come out tonight for a few innings. Imagine seeing him after seeing Wakefield a time or two? Beckett will not come out of the pen tonight, he pitches game 5, lol. Also, Wakefield has the 2nd worst ERA in postseason history among guys with at least 40 innings pitched, so he has a history of sucking this time of year. Plus, the Cub thing was in 2003. And finally, Beckett pitched one of the greatest games in postseason history, a complete game shutout in game 6 of the 2003 World Series at New York to win the crown, on 3 days rest, and his other start on 3 days rest that postseason saw him allow only 1 run, so he's done it before and done it well. There is only a 20 percent chance of showers in Cleveland, and the radar is clear for hundreds of miles around the city. No chance this game gets rained out.
  18. The SEC is a superior league due to the low academic standards leaguewide at the schools, and the Big 10 has it's problems due to the high academic standards leaguewide at the schools. I thought everybody knew this, they don't call the SEC "skip every class" for nothing, and it's a known fact that Big 10 schools are pretty good academically for the most part. The SEC just has a lot more kids to choose from than the Big 10 due to academic things.
  19. Boston is apparently going to stick with Wakefield tonight. I don't like this decision at all, as if Beckett pitches tonight, he could pitch game 7 on regular rest (and I think there is a great chance this goes 7), and to me Wakefield's back is a bigger question mark than Beckett on 3 days rest. Although this might be a moot point, because Boston is in deep doo doo if they lose tonight either way. They SHOULD pound Paul Byrd in theory with as much as he's in the strike zone, but then again he won't issue the walks that Boston thrives on, so tonight should be interesting and likely high scoring.
  20. The Rockies have an incredible bullpen and outstanding lineup, plus play great defense, so they obviously have a great shot in the World Series when you combine that with how hot they are. The problem is, they will be going against an outstanding AL team, who will have just as good a lineup, just as good a bullpen, and a better starting pitching rotation (I still don't trust the Rockies starters after Francis). The World Series should be a great one no matter who wins in the AL, but the Rockies will not find it quite as easy now that they don't get to play NL teams anymore.
  21. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Oct 15, 2007 -> 04:23 PM) The Louisville and Cinncy games are no walk in the park. Neither of those teams are good enough to win in Tampa, especially since if USF wins at Rutgers and remains undefeated, the games will likely be in front of crowds similar to the one at the USF/West Virginia game earlier this year.
  22. Really a well played game and fun to watch. Both teams got very good bullpen work, good defense, got out of some jams, the 2 run homer.....Cleveland just got the clutch hit and then hustle by Hafner to get the other 2 runs, and Westbrook was able to get out of the jams which Daisuke couldn't. Still looks like a series that will go 6 or 7 games, and the winner will be at a major disadvantage against Colorado in terms of setting up their rotation and days of rest. And wow, Daisuke has turned out to be quite a bust. Not surprising, but it just hits you when you watch him pitch as poorly as he has in his 2 playoff outings. Oh, and I thought the ump was horrid for both teams, no conspiracy. Keep in mind the ump was the HORRID Brian Gorman behind the plate, who has a small strike zone, but of course we know him better as the receiver of Hawk's venom after he threw out Mark Buehrle against Baltimore, ending Mark's streak of starts going 6 innings or longer.
  23. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Oct 15, 2007 -> 01:53 PM) Truer words were never spoken. With 2:18 remaining, Iowa had run 70 plays to Illinois 50, outgained them by almost 100 yards, and held the ball for nearly 10 more minutes. Iowa was lucky they were even in the game. Yeah Illinois was definitely outplayed, not sure how anybody would claim otherwise. The Illini were fortunate it was that close realistically. As for general topics, the entire college football world will hold it's breath Thursday, because if USF can survive their trip to Tony Soprano's backyard, they are a clubhouse favorite to go undefeated and finish in the top 2 in the BCS (and the computers LOVE USF) with this schedule: at UCONN Cincinnati in Tampa at Syracuse Louisville in Tampa at Pittsburgh If America wakes up Friday and USF is an undefeated team, I think we will wake up on an early January morning getting ready to watch them play for the National Title.
  24. No matter how bad our team is, or how sad you feel as a Sox fan......all you have to do is watch that video, and it reminds you how smart you were to become a White Sox fan, no matter who you are. And I can comfortably say that ALL Sox fans will agree on that point.
  25. It's amazing how bad the Bears have become, that post Super Bowl loss jinx has something to it, as does the Madden Curse seeing what happened to VY today. Hester and Briggs are fun at least.
