  1. QUOTE(CardsJimEdmonds15 @ Jun 23, 2006 -> 11:19 AM) Winning 100 games in the regular season means NOTHING if you dont show up to play in the playoffs.. or if you take it easy in September and fall apart because you play no meaningless game.. it doesnt mean a whole lot.. that's why I'm hoping the Central actually goes down to the last week for the Cards.. I want my team showing up in the playoffs.. but it does mean something.. just not when you when you win your division by like 20 games the last couple years.. that was my point! Damned right.....or as the '96 Bulls said "72-10 don't mean a thing without the ring". The regular season is the most important in baseball in all of sports, but at the same time, you can win 117 games like the Mariners did in 2001, but if you lose in the playoffs like they did, it means nothing.
  2. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 23, 2006 -> 10:07 AM) See also Matt Leinart. That's an extremely special case, and he had been in school for 4 years already (3 as a player and he redshirted), but point taken.
  3. QUOTE(My Dixie Normus @ Jun 23, 2006 -> 10:36 AM) "Baseball is a social institution with responsibility to set appropriate tone and example. Conduct or language that reflects otherwise will not be tolerated. The use of slurs embarrasses the individual, the club and the game." - Bud Selig. Hey Bud, Amen.
  4. QUOTE(Wedge @ Jun 23, 2006 -> 09:59 AM) Pedro is a shell of himself. Tell me he'd be doing this in the AL. I stand by my comments in this thread in regards to the Mets, even if they are arrogant.....however this is just silly. Pedro's raw stuff isn't as good as it used to be, but he's a great PITCHER, and still has NASTY offspeed stuff, so he's been damn good (as good as ever) this year (although his record isn't as good as it should be due to lack of run support).
  5. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jun 23, 2006 -> 10:22 AM) This is also Liriano's first time around the league as a starter. Zambrano has proven for years now that he's just an unbelievable pitcher even though he's a psycho. Liriano is one hell of a talent but his numbers are sure to go up a bit once he pitches a little more. Also correct. IIRC, King Felix (other than W-L record, he got no run support) put up somewhat similar numbers to Liriano his first time around the league the 2nd half of last season, but he's struggled a bit this season.
  6. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jun 23, 2006 -> 10:42 AM) And doesn't hit .140ish every year with risp. Also a vaild point, although Thome close and late (until last night's big homer) was hitting .140ish.
  7. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 23, 2006 -> 01:01 AM) You mean like how Adam Dunn is generally not appreciated as the offensive juggernaut that he is because he has a low batting average and a high K rate but at the same time hits 40+ HRs and puts up a .380+ OBP? Exactly, you hit it on the head Kalapse, great comparison (although Thome does get more love here than Dunn does in Cincy since Thome hits for a much higher batting average).
  8. Papelbon, Rivera, Ryan, Jenks. In other words, Jenks is the best closer outside the AL East, but he'd be the 4th best one in that division....yikes.
  9. Hey Bud, If we had post of the week, that's a winner. Also, the comments from Uncle Jerry are very well said, great job owner. QUOTE(redandwhite @ Jun 23, 2006 -> 01:57 AM) Perhaps, it's harder to figure out why his job is so secure. Becaues he's a great BASEBALL MANAGER, and that's his job. Just because he's over the top and ignorant sometimes and pisses off people like you doesn't change the fact he's great at his job.
  10. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 23, 2006 -> 10:32 AM) The Sox are going to find out what Politte has left now, so if he doesn't have anything left they'll have time to make another acquisition or turn things over to someone else. I am thinking when he does come up, we won't see him used near as much as the Sox try to keep his arm a bit more fresh and hope that allows him to feel better when he's on the mound. Agreed, although I think your actually rooting for Cliff to fail so that we see your boy Tracey again.
  11. QUOTE(Steff @ Jun 23, 2006 -> 10:35 AM) Have you had your blood pressure checked lately...? ' Random question, but yes I have. As a matter of fact, I had a checkup about 3 weeks ago.
  12. Just because a girl has giant breasts doesn't mean she is hot......there is a difference between being hot and being a drunken TF candidate.
  13. QUOTE(Steff @ Jun 23, 2006 -> 10:32 AM) ""Let's put it this way," one Cardinals source said Thursday night. "They looked like they knew what was coming the first two nights. They looked like they had no idea tonight. " Isn't it amazing how that works? When your pitchers f***ing suck, it looks like the other team knows what is coming, but when the pitcher throws the ball great, the hitters look clueless. Such groundbreaking info from the Cards, their fans, and the sportswriters in St. Louis :rolly
  14. QUOTE(whitesoxin @ Jun 23, 2006 -> 12:24 AM) Would you guys rather have a staff of solid proven veterans like we have now or young studs with unreal potential? I'll take what we got now.....a stud young closer, a stud swing man in B-Mac, and a starting staff full of proven veteran horses. But I'd also take a few of the guys mentioned in this thread too if I could.
  15. QUOTE(Dam8610 @ Jun 23, 2006 -> 12:20 AM) Huh? Isn't that the type of guy the common fan loves? Common fans (none of which you'll ever see on a message board keep in mind, this would be crazy ass die hard land here) don't tend to embrace guys who don't play defense and strike out a ton, based on what I've seen. That doesn't diminish Jim as a player obviously, but fans love the guys that play defense balls out, hit well, and don't strike out a lot.
  16. QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Jun 22, 2006 -> 11:13 PM) Yeah, it's a matter of opinion. I think the fact that Zambrano is a Cub also clouds the judgement of hella motherf***ers. All I know: the dude is a no-hitter waiting to happen. And you can't knock a guy for being fiery. But you can knock him for being crazy, and it's a fine line. Also, I have no bias against Zambrano, he's the only Cub I don't have bias against since at least he has balls and goes out and does his thing every 5 days, no matter how he feels. The other thing to remember besides the walks though is Liriano is doing his s*** this year against the AL, whereas Zambrano is pitching against those sorry ass NL bums (other than his start at The Cell, in which he wasn't spectacular by his standards and would have got the loss if Juan could throw from 2nd to 1st).
  17. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Jun 22, 2006 -> 11:20 PM) Dude, I'm right there with ya. I'm biased and it's no secret that I love Thome, but I'm not sure why Sox fans are not absolutely nuts about him. He gets a half ass ovation when he comes to the plate and a lot of criticism. It's hard for the common fan to appreciate a guy who strikes out a lot and doesn't play the field, which is why Thome will never get the love he should. But anybody that hits in the .280's with 50/135 type numbers and walks a ton (over .400 OBP) is a legend in my book, I just wish everybody else saw it that way.
  18. QUOTE(GoRowand33 @ Jun 22, 2006 -> 11:10 PM) awesome article Yep, Morrissey occasionally pisses me off (the comments comparing a Sox to Cubs WS parade come to mind), but for the most part, he's a solid columnist and I'm glad he is back from the cancer treatment so quickly.
  19. QUOTE(THEWOOD @ Jun 22, 2006 -> 09:24 PM) It has nothing to do with me being an OSU fan. ODEN WILL PLAY MORE THAN ONE YEAR AT OHIO STATE! Keep dreaming if you think he is gone after one year. That's a lie. And if you think Oden is going to turn down being the #1 overall pick and all that money to go back to school, that's awfully cute, but it's even more wrong.
  20. It's a solid trade, and gets Tyson and his stupid ass contract outta here. Hammerhead would hate it, but I'd be celebrating.
  21. QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Jun 22, 2006 -> 11:06 PM) For future benefits? I'll buy that. But right now, at this very moment, Carlos Zambrano is the most unhittable pitcher in the major leagues, regardless of age. I don't know if I'd take Z even now. Liriano is younger, a lefty, walks way less people, is just as unhittable when he does throw strikes (which is a lot more often), and isn't a raging lunatic.
  22. Liriano, Zambrano, King Felix, Josh Johnson. There are a ton of good young guys, but those are my top 4.
  23. Hopefully there was something wrong with him all year, and he's now healthy and back to something resembling 2005 form, or at least back to his career averages. Heck of a "long relief" guy to have. Plus, I think Montero may have been exposed for what he is the other night, so come back Cliff.
  24. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 22, 2006 -> 09:31 PM) Well, at least he was right to pick us in this matchup.
  25. 0 for 4 night for Albert. Hopefully he worked out the kinks in his swing tonight and he goes off on the Pussycats.
