This is our most likely path for success tonight. Get Jose a lead so he can get people overswinging on his pitcherspitch.

QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 24, 2009 -> 06:17 PM) Hawk is especially annoying when we play in Boston. 3rd base call and we're up and going early with HH. Ha-cha!

I'm not the type of poster to usually do this: but Contreras is going to get rocked. possibly also socked.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 24, 2009 -> 05:49 PM) Here we go again While we're at it, let me add that Timo Perez, Jerry Owens, Brent Lillibridge and Dewayne Wise are each 1/4 of the reason we havent been a 2000s dynasty. I also think that Brian Anderson mightve been good if he had gotten a ton more atbats.

But beyond that, it is SO oversimplifying the African-American vote. Everyone who is black voted for Obama because he's black? Totally wrong. Hell, a huge portion of the black US population is socially conservative. There was a difficult decision on the minds of many- whether to vote perhaps on the side of faith or on the side of shared experience....but to say the decision was open and shut oversimplifies it in a borderline insulting way. Do you think a politician should endorse the candidate they think is best, or should the endorse the candidate whose party apparently will later feel you're indebted to them..? The quoted text makes it seem you think he owed the GOP a vote, regardless of any other concerns.

This doesnt add up. Powell, when at the absolute height of his political clout (many said he couldve been President with ease, taking blue states, etc)..........he DIDNT WANT IT. So since he doesnt want the nation's higher offices anymore, he suddenly wants to play politics to get ahead? It seems far more likely to me that he's just fed up with the Bush administration and ready to declare his break. There are so many reasons why he would have preferred Obama to McCain at this juncture. Not just race. Especially shocking you'd say that about THIS guy, who has no past history of making African-American issues his focus.

Going with the offense lineup. I hate to say it but maybe Rios needs to sit. To support Contreras we may have to club a ton of runs.

Alexei v. Valentin at ss
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 24, 2009 -> 02:28 PM) Alexei and its not even close. There should be a disclaimer at the top of the board that keeps mentioning he's a rookie at the position for god sakes. I think what worries many about Alexei's attributes at the position are the unteachable ones. Starting w/ size.

Alexei v. Valentin at ss
QUOTE (bschmaranz @ Aug 24, 2009 -> 01:30 PM) Jose still remains the only player to force me to close my eyes and say "oh s***, oh s***, oh s***" whenever the ball was grounded to him. Hawk doesnt swear, but he came as close as he tends to at the end of the perfect game..."Alex-EYYYYY??!!!!!"

Alexei v. Valentin at ss
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 24, 2009 -> 01:21 PM) I'd tend to agree, if the OF situation is such that there is a hole there, I'd love to see Alexei in the OF. He's got speed and range, seemed reasonably skilled in CF in his few games playing there (so LF should, in theory, be easier), has a cannon arm, and in the OF he has more chance to make up for mental mistakes before the ball gets to him. Couldnt agree more. Cuba's national team probably knew him better than anyone else in the baseball world. In the Classic, I believe they played him in OF. The only fear is with Rios and Ramirez in the OF, the traditional power spots are not filled with...well..power.

Alexei v. Valentin at ss
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 24, 2009 -> 11:27 AM) I'll never forget the game in 2000 when sirotka lost 1-0 to Pedro at Fenway, and the only run scored was after valentin airmailed a throw into the crowd on a routine grounder, which led to a runner on 2nd, who was knocked in on the next at bat. Looking back at the box score, Pedro had 15 K's in that game! http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/BO...200007230.shtml One of the best games I ever remember seeing. I never thought AR's popularity would take such a nosedive from year 1 to year 2. Especially if you had told me ahead of time he'd bump up his walks per appearance and what not.

Alexei v. Valentin at ss
Who is/was better at the position? Granted we havent seen Alexei there long enough..... but neither looks/ed like a natural at the position for whatever reason. In AR's case i think he's kind of not built for the position...kind of a tallish SS. Also i think he's perhaps fast on his feet but not quick....if that makes any sense.

Anyone else here scared of these next 20 up and coming games?

2009 Cubs thread
What if the new Cubs brass came in and immediately wanted payroll flexibility back. In the offseason, would you do the following, knowing it would be our last move for awhile: Linebrink for Soriano Vitters Cashner Flaherty......and perhaps another contract coming back our way. What can I say, there'd be the new DH and the farm system is restocked. Obviously a pure joke of a scenario but I'm trying to think what scenario there could possibly be where we'd accept AS on our team.

Are the Sox done?
QUOTE (RME JICO @ Aug 24, 2009 -> 09:29 AM) Detroit is barely winning games (even though they still count). They have 6 1-run wins this month out of their 12 wins, and only 2 have been by 3 or more runs. We have 10 wins in August, with only 3 1-run wins, but have 5 wins by 3 or more runs. I might actually rather be the team that wins the one-run games. Any team can have a stretch of blowouts, but the better teams win over the course of 162 So far that's DET. Hope it doesnt last obviously.
