QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 6, 2008 -> 02:41 PM) you aren't convincing me. AJ's handled some pretty sick pitchers in his career, I think he can handle Jonathen the AMAZING another thing to think about.... if AJ was in there catching, i sure wouldnt want to see him with a lower velocity guy pitching. especially when you have some of the best baserunners around out there.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 6, 2008 -> 02:28 PM) I care about A.J. making it, yes. But, the fact that a .220 hitter going to an ASG is inexcusable. At least take Dioner Navarro. TBH, I think Navarro's been a better player than A.J. But Varitek is absolutely ridiculous. yea Navarro's on the team, and that's the thing. AJ's probably not going to get an at-bat if he's on the team. So, if there's some Papelbon pitch that is routinely in the dirt in a certain situation, maybe Varitek knows that, can block it, and contribute to a save. It's a little thing, but it's probably bigger for our wants and needs regarding the World Series home field. The thing is, the All-Star game isnt all about who's deserving or not. Like it or not, it's now about getting a best fit for winning the game. If AJ isnt going to bat, get someone in there who will contribute. Devil's advocacy sure is fun!

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 6, 2008 -> 02:24 PM) Terry Francona is a joke. I think he has a lot to do with Varitek going. Jason Varitek: .219 7 HR 27 RBI .301 OBP .661 OPS A.J. Pierzynski: .299 7 HR 32 RBI .338 OBP .784 OPS Dioner Navarro: .318 4 HR 33 RBI .370 OBP .805 OPS You tell me who really deserves to go... the only argument that can be made is that Francona knows he'll want Varitek catching Papelbon to end the game in a win. even though i dont know if i agree with that logic, i will say that winning the All-Star game has more real importance to me than AJ making it.

To me, the word "snub" is used way too often. There is so much talent in the majors, that there's this whole tier of guys who can claim they were snubbed. Therefore, they're not snubs, it's just that they were all roughly tied and one had to make it. It's only a snub if it's a really sizeable disparity. Ervin Santana is maybe a little lower with most stats than Floyd, but looks a little better with others, including innings.

with bases loaded 2 out, my TV shorts out unless i can get things back, off to the bar for me. -
not to get down on our pitching staff, which has undoubtedly done better than any of us expected... but outside of Linebrink we cant say that it's been total dominance from anyone person. More a collection of good consistent guys, more than anything. And with so many deserving guys in the majors, you can usually fill that All-Star staff with guys who are all at or near dominant for half a year. (with the exception of the guys who have to be the sole representative from their shoddy team) For example, Danks has the sparkling ERA, but also hasnt gone as deep into games as All-Stars tend to. Has worked his way out of a lot of trouble - which is absolutely great, and more than we expected from him this early....but a little short of All-Star. And Floyd has the win totals, but everything else about his year has screamed - consistent, solid guy. Again, not down on him at all - just saying if he made it, a whole tier of guys would have an argument for having been snubbed. Linebrink has had the real stretches of dominance here, and he'd be the guy I would fight for most.

i heard Street on the score once say that Swish was "a little annoying once in a great while" -- true, but lets hit it a mile anyway

Javy's almost the most maddening in the sense that he rarely totally loses it. Just spurts of badness, but the spurts always happen several times per game.

That wall crunch just knocked .3 prospects out of our past deal with Oakland.
