SouthSideSox deep dive/profile on Brooks Baldwin
I mean I'm high on Baldwin as anybody but 50% of the time he's just a utility guy, 20% of the time he's a solid regular, 10% of the time he becomes a borderline star and 10% of the time he washes out of MLB in a few years due to injuries or whatever. The conclusion of the article doesn't really follow the premise, which is that he's an interesting youngish player -- not a foundational piece. Even if he turns into a 3 WAR player, borderline all-star, we still need about 20 more WAR around him to get to 90 or so projected wins. He'd just be a nice cog best case. It was stupid we didn't give him more ABs last year and jerked him around the field. Just park him in LF and let Beni start the year on the IL.

I figured it was like 11-1 or something, checked it's 4-0?

The mariners lost like 27-5 today, I'm sure they are still projected for around 88 wins. Nothing matters, especially in a WBC year.

Fair enough and I stand corrected. If he had the bone spur in 2024 hopefully that explains the velocity. There were games he wasn't even topping out over 91 iirc.

How would an injury in 2025 affect his 2024 stats? You guys are just wishcasting stuff. He's a RHP that throws 91mph. If he succeeds he's a unicorn, no matter what the whiff rate is on his changeup. It's more likely he's out of MLB in 3 years than he's a solid 3rd starter.

Fangraphs had it at 4.2 runs above average, the only pitch he had with a better than average run value. It's a good changeup, but you can't rely on a changeup as your primary pitch, that uh, why it's the changeup.

Whatever the process was it led to a pretty s%*# outcome. At best he's like a 5th starter.

I just don't know what he has to miss bats. It's not his fastball, it's not his breaking balls and his changeup is solid but not elite and too reliant on pinpoint command. His average 4 seam velocity prior to TJS was 91.3. Maybe he gains a couple ticks otherwise I just don't see it.

He'll be in Korea in a few years imo. He stinks. Was not impressed in person or any of his starts last year on TV. One of Getz's bad scouting mistakes so far imo.

It is amazing how often Tom Tango's work comes up still in 2026. They are still using a variation of his original "Base Runs" formula.- 2026 Spring Training Thread
I'm pretty close to this as well. One of them will settle into average regular, other guy probably mildly useful utility IF.- 2026 Spring Training Thread
Yea that was when he was trying to attack early in the count after pitchers started attacking iirc. Good call.- 2026 Spring Training Thread
It's mostly just minor league numbers propelling Chase in the projections. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Both are limited players in their own way and we'll see how they perform this year. Chase needs to prove he can still work counts after the book is out on him. Sosa needs to show his 2nd half power surge wasn't a fluke and continue to improve his defense at 2B.- 3/2/2026 - Sox v.
