Is Ricky Renteria once again simply a placeholder manager?

That would be awesome. -
FS: Andrew Vaughn goes to White Sox at pick No. 3
chitownsportsfan replied to Rankin's topic in Pale Hose Talk
you think a guy that is hitting 272 in high A is going to put up around a 300 average in MLB? That's wishcasting. Other than his K rate there is nothing in Madrigal's batted ball profile to suggest he'll be a 300 hitter in MLB. @oldsox is 100% correct right now Yolmer is the better hitter. Yolmer also put up better lines, at a younger age, in the minors. At 22, Yolmer was hitting 293 in AAA with a 293/349/412 line. There is a strange confirmation bias going on with Madrigal and certain segments of the fanbase. Because he was typecast as a polished college player with a high floor it's almost assumed that's what he'll pan out as. So far, he hasn't panned out into jack shit. If his FV was something like 60 on draft day right now it looks close to 45. He's got time to turn things around and his next three months in AA are absolutely critical either way. If he can hold his own he looks back on a "solid regular in 2021" path. If he can't hang, he's going to be repeating 2020 in AA at 23, which isn't ideal for a guy drafted where he was. -
aka blake rutherford! lol
-
They got some random A+ guy for Jay Bruce so using that as a guide I think they'd want a bit more for Domingo. I don't rate Rutherford at all so I'd rather trade him than Adolfo. Still think Adolfo has a 270/330/500 ceiling and is the better prospect.
-
He'd come cheap no doubt. I bet if you offered the Mariners Rutherford straight up and asked for the Ms to cover the remaining 1 million he's owed this year they'd do it without hesitation. I would too, at that price who cares. He could possibly improve enough to be a 3 war player. Only 26. Would also have the benefit of pushing Yonder off the roster in theory.
-
He has had numerous plays where the ball literally is in his glove and then he drops it. He is nightly talk radio fodder here in Seattle. Fangraphs has him a staggering -12 runs (that's Jose Abreu territory) after 60 games so far this year below a league average defender (including positional adjustments).
-
If you think Eloy is bad out there, wait until you see Domingo. Unfortunately he's a DH.
-
Similar athletic profile but Rios never developed much power, topping out around 20 HR a year. You'd hope in his prime from 25-30 Moncada is closer to 30 than 20 a year.

While I'm as frustrated with the kid as anybody he's still young enough to where you keep trotting him out and hope something clicks or he slowly can improve to bad 4th decent 5th starter territory for next year and so on after. I don't think anybody has to do much of a deep dive into his numbers to find why he struggles just watching it's clear he has zero command of any pitch. I'm not even talking about control where sometimes a guy can command a pitch but can't control his entire arsenal: he cannot command a single one of his pitches on any given night, most nights in fact. What do you even do with a guy like that? He's not going to magically find it out of the pen, in fact it might be more amplified given the higher leverage and possibility of coming in out of the stretch more often than not. Gotta keep trying him as a starter for now and hope for better. One thing I'd like to see is a SHORT LEASH. There's no reason to burn through so many pitches with him. If he's made it 5 innings through 90 pitches with 3 runs more often than not that should be it for him. It seems the Sox have an outdated philosophy when it comes to developing young starters. Not every guy is going to be able to give you 6-7 innings all the time or even 5. In today's game, carrying 13 relievers, you can afford to have a guys like that, especially when you're trying to build them up confidence wise. I don't think Lopez is developing good habits being left out to dry early in his career.

What a strange quote from renteria. He threw Tim under the bus and used "I..." Instead of we. -

Not much of a pitching guy but isn't a cutter just a more extreme 2 seamer with a bit of a wider grip? That's by far his best pitch has great tailing movement to lefties and bores in on righties. -

I think Fangraphs classifies it as a "cutter" and according to their data he's using it 22.3% of the time this year averaging 91.3 mph. His 4 seamer is coming in at 94.3 on average, which is pretty good for him as well. -

His best pitch when he's been rolling has been his 2 seamer and then following that up with a decent change and breaking ball. I would hope he ditches the sinker. Pitching to contact is a fool's errand. edit: 2 seamer, yikes. More coffee. -

Tim is a good player but many of us want him to be great and in order to be great he's gotta get a better handle on how to approach ABs like that. -

When are folks going to realize he's a 2 WAR 1B at this point? If that. He's down to a 107 wRC+ and he's once again going to be -15 runs negative as a defender. I'm so fucking sick of the hero worship for this guy. -

Jeeze early ass start. Other than Moncada yesterday's game really left a sour smell in the air so let's try and win today!
