  1. QUOTE (Baron @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 02:33 PM) You thinking someone like Leury Garcia? Please don't make me think about that.
  2. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 02:26 PM) Disagree with what you are implying. The A's are a rebuilding team that can wait for a guy like Nottingham to develop while Phegley is the stop gap. The Sox have stated this 3 year window, so if they are trading Jeff, they are probably looking at prospects in AA-AAA in the 22-25 age range that don't have that much more development time left, that they could just plug into their big league line up. It's just a matter if teams are willing to give that up. Yes, the A's can wait on people...but if Samardzija couldn't draw a package this good and the White Sox are looking for MLB-ready talent, the conclusion one might come to is that the MLB-ready talent will be even weaker.
  3. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 02:21 PM) And how do we even know this package was available for Samardjiza? "Samardzija couldn't even draw a package this good" doesn't make me feel particularly happy.
  4. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 02:19 PM) Disagree, Kazmir may certainly have come cheaper than Smarj. But houston was clearly scouting Samardjiza hard and viewed him as a viable alternative to giving up bigger spects for Cueto and many spects for hamels. Now there are the Jays and the Royals, and we likely won't trade to Royals. So we have the Jays, who are more interested in Cueto. By all accounts, they moved from Sox because Sox apparently don't believe they are sellers yet. That's an amazing feat to continue to surprise me at our ineptitude this late into this crap season. Although Kazmir has more of an injury history, he's outperforming Samardzija this year so far. He's paid a tiny bit more, would translate to about $1 million extra in payroll during the last 2 months for Kazmir over Samardzija, but you get a guy performing better who also happens to be a lefty which is always a nice bonus. Hard to believe Samardzija could gather a much bigger return.
  5. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 02:08 PM) I mean yeah that's the risk, but again, you resisting and escalating the situation to the point that you get arrested only hurts the cause. It doesn't help it. And you're never going to logically talk a cop out of arresting you. With how menial the provocation was in this case (put that cigarette out immediately flashes into get out of the car/taze threat/arrest), there's no way that you could actually educate human beings to be that passive. Having to deal with police in an adversarial way is going to annoy some people, maybe even catch them on a bad day. There's just no way you could ever, ever get humans to always be this passive.
  6. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 02:09 PM) You're embarrassed the Sox didn't get Nottingham for Samardzija? Have you ever even heard of Nottingham until this trade was announced? He's replying to the phrase "The White Sox haven't decided on a course of action" there.
  7. QUOTE (staxx @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 02:03 PM) Only problem is that our fantastic manager doesn't know how to platoon vs LHP/RHP We have that issue right now as it is. Alvarez's numbers are quite similar to LaRoches, he's got 1 year of arb eligibility remaining so he's at least moderately cheaper, he's worse on defense but we have the DH slot and they don't, LaRoche has more of a recent NL history and might even break out of his current slump if he were sent there. Basically it would be a trade of the White Sox "Saving some money" for "Taking on a headcase". Seems like a decent enough gamble. We paid $12.5 mil per year for Alvarez's production out of the DH spot this year already.
  8. Pedro Alvarez for LaRoche could actually be interesting. Saves the White Sox a bit of money and clears out a headcase for the Pirates.
  9. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 01:58 PM) It will be interesting to see what the Sox get for Shark vs. the Kazmir return. Personally, I hope they get a more advanced prospect. Do you really want the Sox to acquire a guy who needs to go through their system for a few years? Well I wouldn't be mad if it was a guy 2-3 years away but was talented, but that's because I'm willing to call this a rebuilding team.
  10. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 01:45 PM) No, it means minor league catchers are very difficult to project, because there is a lot going on with them. Flowers was .275/.391/.876 his minor league career at was a top 75 prospect. He was supposed to be all offense, no defense. Now he's the opposite, and the defense, at least to me, seems to be declining. That would project a lot better. An A ball catcher, even if he is having a "break out" season, is still just a lottery ticket. Worth highlighting that Flowers, while in the minors, had several other things going on with him, including a steroid suspension.
  11. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 01:37 PM) Tyler Flowers was a breakout catching prospect once. Didn't KW watch him hit a bunch of homers in the AZ Fall League? The kid would be nice to have, but still there are very few catchers anymore with really nice offensive games. I'm not sure what this post actually means? Nottingham will bust because Flowers did? Nottingham is a poor prospect because he's a catcher?
  12. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 01:35 PM) So Kazmir brought essentially nothing back. Everyone temper your expectations for Samardzija. Catcher around #10 in the Astros system is still better than a comp pick.
  13. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 01:27 PM) The thing you ignore, which is odd since you seem to be very concerned with JR's bank account, is De Aza also makes $4.5 million more than Avi. But let's revisit when Avi is hot and De Aza is cold. I'd love to actually see this. Some genuine pop would be a very nice sign for the future. As of this season, he's one of the 5 or so worst outfielders in baseball.
  14. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 01:25 PM) Even when we were winning, I still said the defense and offense sucked too much and it was time to put the focus to next year (while still potentially buying). If things worked out and you end up winning, great, but I'm not not making moves when your playoff odds are below 5% and your team has sucked defensively for 2 full seasons (and now most of a 3rd season). I'll add this to my mental list of systematic problems with this front office.
  15. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 01:23 PM) It really irks me that the Sox took so long and the market has now turned far more neutral. But you saw the winning streak, this team coulda been a contender!
  16. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 01:18 PM) or that teams really won't give up much for a rental Even one who has been better than Samardzija this season.
  17. @whitesox White Sox have placed Emilio Bonifacio on the Bereavement List and recalled Leury Garcia from @KnightsBaseball. (1/2) @whitesox Under Major League Baseball rules, Bonifacio must remain on the list for a minimum of three games and not more than seven. (2/2)
  18. Questions: Does that 100% cover Houstons pitching needs or do they have more? How is that return? Anyone know anything?
  19. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 12:58 PM) Maybe, but this was bumped when De Aza was on a hot streak and at the peak of his value. Feeky likes to mention BABIP, yet, he isn't even looking at De Aza's. I'll use a line he used for Avi, he is going to crash, and crash hard. He loves to bump threads the second he supposedly looks good, like second Flowers dipped below .200, and when Semien had an .850 OPS. He remains silent when the tide turns the other way. De Aza was underappreciated, but to really think the White Sox would be a better team with him and not Avi is so beyond laughable. I generally agreed with you until the last line. Avi's been so bad this year that "The White Sox would be better with De Aza right now" is unarguably true. Long term would they be better with him? Well, Avi's been so bad that if the White Sox want to really field a competitive roster next year he needs replaced. If they're ok rebuilding, he can have another year or two to see if he can turn into something useful. He might well just be a guy we waste 4 years on without ever getting anything positive.
  20. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 12:36 PM) lets all forget that he got DFAed And was going into his 3rd arbitration season this year such that his salary, if offered arbitration, would be more than what he's getting right now. He'd also be a FA at the end of this year.
  21. Well there's a surprising bump.
  22. QUOTE (BamaDoc @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 12:26 PM) The original post mentioned that perhaps Abreu and Puig don't get along. Others that he is not a great teammate and was not receptive to coaching/working on defense. If he doesn't have a strong work ethic, I could see that clash with Abreu. Am I the only one who wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole without getting positive answers to those questions? With where the White Sox are...I'm kinda open to taking a bigger gamble on an "attitude problem" from a young guy. If it gets us a real talent...it makes me think a lot more than I would otherwise. That said, the "the Dodgers want to move him because of attitude problems" is a major thing that should lower the asking price.
  23. So...backstory...in NY, there was actually a more intelligent minimum wage bill offered by Democrats in the state legislature. Something like $12-13 range for New York City, lower ranges for the upstate communities like Buffalo. Applied to more industries, more equitably. That proposal was unable to pass Republican opposition in the legislature. The end result is that to make a minimum wage increase happen, the "state wage board" whatever that is was the only place that could act and they apparently have to act with certain restrictions like they have to treat the whole state equally and they're only allowed to regulate wages at retailers of certain sizes. So the craziness comes about as a combination of a successful push for an increased minimum wage and a legislature that won't allow it to happen in a more intelligent way. Also, pushing this forward could serve as motivation for the legislature to stop blocking a more intelligent proposal as well, so there's that too.
  24. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 12:45 AM) Miller would be a league average hitter, so an average SS would probably be a little worse. I took a real quick glance and a .670 OPS looks to be middle of the pack for the position. I really don't think that number is unattainable for Tyler given the plate discipline and power he's demonstrated in the minors. If he could do that for a season next year (or if Sanchez could)...then that could turn either of them into a solid trade-asset if Anderson is really able to push that position next year.
  25. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 11:42 AM) 2 things. #1 he is above league average, and #2 his range factor is going up, not down. What you make of the numbers totally depends on how much value you put into fielding stats. The other stat, the Zone rating, the "number of balls he is fielding in his typical zone", is the other one...and when I checked a couple days ago that was as bad as it has been in years.
